And he abode at that time in the king’s court with Bagatha and Thara the king’s eunuchs, who were porters of the palace.

And when he understood their designs, and had diligently searched into their projects, he learned that they went about to lay violent hands on king Artaxerxes, and he told the king thereof.

Then the king had them both examined, and after they had confessed, commanded them to be put to death.

But the king made a record of what was done: and Mardochai also committed the memory of the thing to writing.

And the king commanded him, to abide in the court of the palace, and gave him presents for the information.

But Aman the son of Amadathi the Bugite was in great honour with the king, and sought to hurt Mardochai and his people, because of the two eunuchs of the king who were put to death.

Zu dieser Zeit hielt er sich am Hofe des Königs auf mit Bagatha und Thara, den Kämmerern des Königs, welche Türhüter des Palastes waren.

Als er deren Gesinnungen erkannt und ihre Absichten genauer durchschaut hatte, gewahrte er, dass sie Hand an den König Artaxerxes legen wollten, und zeigte dies dem Könige an.

Dieser ließ eine Untersuchung anstellen und, da sie geständig waren, sie zum Tode führen.

Der König aber ließ das, was geschehen war, in die Denkbücher eintragen und auch Mardochäus hinterlegte über diese Sache eine Schrift zur Erinnerung.

Hierauf befahl ihm der König, am Hofe des Palastes zu bleiben, und gab ihm Geschenke für die Anzeige.

Aman aber, der Sohn Amadathis, der Bugäer, stand in hohen Ehren bei dem Könige und wollte Mardochäus und dessen Volke schaden, wegen der zwei Kämmerer des Königs, welche getötet worden waren. Bis hierher geht die Vorrede. Was nun folgt, stand an der Stelle, wo es im Buche heißt: „Man solle ihnen ihre Güter und Habe rauben.“ Dies haben wir nur in der gewöhnlichen Ausgabe gefunden.
