- Kapitel 23 -

(2 Chronicles 34:29–33)

And they reported to the king what she had said. And he sent, and all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem were gathered to him.

And the king ascended to the temple of the Lord. And with him were all the men of Judah and all who were living in Jerusalem: the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, from the small to the great. And in the hearing of everyone, he read all the words of the book of the covenant, which was found in the house of the Lord.

And the king stood upon the step. And he struck a covenant before the Lord, so that they would walk after the Lord, and keep his precepts and testimonies and ceremonies, with all their heart and with all their soul, and so that they would carry out the words of this covenant, which had been written in that book. And the people agreed to the covenant.(a)

Josiah Destroys Idolatry

(1 Kings 13:1–10; 2 Chronicles 34:3–7)

And the king instructed Hilkiah, the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, so that they would cast out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels which had been made for Baal, and for the sacred grove, and for the entire army of heaven. And he burned them outside of Jerusalem, in the steep valley of Kidron. And he carried their dust into Bethel.

And he destroyed the soothsayers, whom the kings of Judah had appointed to sacrifice in the high places throughout the cities of Judah, and all around Jerusalem, along with those who were burning incense to Baal, and to the Sun, and to the Moon, and to the twelve signs, and to the entire army of heaven.

And he caused the sacred grove to be carried away from the house of the Lord, outside of Jerusalem, to the steep valley of Kidron. And he burned it there, and reduced it to dust. And he cast the dust over the graves of the common people.

Also, he destroyed the small places of the effeminate, which were in the house of the Lord, for which the women were weaving something like little houses in the sacred grove.

And he gathered together all the priests from the cities of Judah. And he defiled the high places, where the priests were sacrificing, from Geba as far as Beersheba. And he tore down the altars of the gates at the entrance to the gate of Joshua, the leader of the city, which was to the left of the gate of the city.

Yet truly, the priests of the high places did not ascend to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem. For they would only eat from the unleavened bread in the midst of their brothers.

Also, he defiled Topheth, which is in the steep valley of the son of Hinnom, so that no one would consecrate his son or his daughter, through fire, to Molech.

Also, he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the Sun, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, beside the hallway of Nathan-melech, the eunuch, who was in Pharurim. And he burned the chariots of the Sun with fire.

Also, the altars which were upon the roof of the upper room of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the temple of the Lord, the king destroyed. And he hurried from there, and he scattered their ashes into the torrent Kidron.

Also, the high places which were in Jerusalem, to the right side of the Mount of Offense, which Solomon, the king of Israel, had built to Ashtoreth, the idol of the Sidonians, and to Chemosh, the offense of Moab, and to Milcom, the abomination of the sons of Ammon, the king defiled.

And he crushed the statues, and he cut down the sacred groves. And he filled their places with the bones of the dead.

Then too, the altar which was in Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, had made: both that altar and the high place he tore down, and burned, and reduced to dust. And then he also set fire to the sacred grove.

And in that place Josiah, turning, saw the sepulchers which were on the mount. And he sent and took the bones from the sepulchers. And he burned them upon the altar, and he defiled it in accord with the word of the Lord, which was spoken by the man of God, who had predicted these events.

And he said, “What is that monument that I see?” And the citizens of that city responded to him: “It is the sepulcher of the man of God, who came from Judah, and who predicted these events, which you have carried out concerning the altar of Bethel.”

And he said: “Permit him. Let no one move his bones.” And his bones have remained untouched, with the bones of the prophet who had arrived from Samaria.

Then too, all the shrines of the high places, which were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord, Josiah took away. And he acted toward them according to all the works that he had done in Bethel.

And all the priests of the high places, who were in that place, he killed upon the altars. And he burned the bones of the men upon them. And he returned to Jerusalem.

Josiah Restores the Passover

(2 Chronicles 35:1–19)

And he instructed all the people, saying: “Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, according to what has been written in the book of this covenant.”

Now no similar Passover was kept, from the days of the judges, who judged Israel, and from all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah,

as this Passover, which was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem, in the eighteenth year of king Josiah.

Then too, Josiah took away those who divined by spirits, and the soothsayers, and the images of the idols, and the defilements, and the abominations, which had been in the land of Judah and Jerusalem, so that he might establish the words of the law, which were written in the book, which Hilkiah, the priest, found in the temple of the Lord.

There was no king before him similar to him, who returned to the Lord with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his strength, in accord with the entire law of Moses. And after him, there rose up no one similar to him.

Yet truly, the Lord did not turn away from the wrath of his great fury, his fury which was enraged against Judah because of the provocations by which Manasseh had provoked him.

And so the Lord said: “And now I will remove Judah from my face, just as I removed Israel. And I will cast aside this city, Jerusalem, which I have chosen, and the house, about which I said: My name shall be there.”

The Death of Josiah

(2 Chronicles 35:20–24)

Now the rest of the words of Josiah, and all that he did, have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

During his days, Pharaoh Neco, the king of Egypt, ascended against the king of the Assyrians to the river Euphrates. And king Josiah went out to meet him. And when he had seen him, he was killed at Megiddo.

And his servants carried him dead from Megiddo. And they took him to Jerusalem, and they buried him in his own sepulcher. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah. And they anointed him, and made him king in place of his father.

Jehoahaz Succeeds Josiah

(2 Chronicles 36:1–4)

Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah, from Libnah.

And he did evil before the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.

And Pharaoh Neco bound him at Riblah, which is in the land of Hamath, so that he would not reign in Jerusalem. And he imposed a penalty on the land: one hundred talents of silver, and one talent of gold.

And Pharaoh Neco appointed Eliakim, the son of Josiah, as king in place of Josiah his father. And he changed his name to Jehoiakim. Then he took Jehoahaz away, and he brought him into Egypt, and there he died.

Now Jehoiakim gave silver and gold to Pharaoh, when he had taxed the land, according to each one who would contribute by the command of Pharaoh. And he exacted both silver and gold from the people of the land, from each one according to his ability, so that he would give to Pharaoh Neco.

Jehoiakim Reigns in Judah

(2 Chronicles 36:5–8)

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Zebidah, the daughter of Pedaiah, from Rumah.

And he did evil before the Lord, in accord with all that his fathers had done.

Josia stellt die wahre Anbetung wieder her

(2. Chronik 34,29-33)

Sie berichteten also dem Könige, was jener gesagt hatte. Da sandte er hin und alle Ältesten Judas und Jerusalems versammelten sich um ihn.

Alsdann ging der König hinauf in den Tempel des Herrn und alle Männer von Juda und alle Bewohner Jerusalems und mit ihm die Priester und die Propheten und das ganze Volk, vom Kleinen bis zum Großen; und er las vor ihren Ohren alle Worte des Buches des Bundes, das im Hause des Herrn aufgefunden worden war.

Und der König trat auf die Stufe und schloss den Bund vor dem Herrn, dass sie dem Herrn nachwandeln und seine Gebote und Zeugnisse und Satzungen von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele halten und die Worte des Bundes wieder aufrichten wollten, welche in diesem Buche geschrieben standen; und das Volk stimmte dem Bunde zu.

(1. Könige 13,1-10; 2. Chronik 34,3-7)

Darauf befahl der König dem Hohenpriester Helkias und den Priestern der zweiten Ordnung und den Türhütern, alle Geräte, die für den Baal und für den Hain und das ganze Heer des Himmels gemacht waren, aus dem Tempel des Herrn zu schaffen; und er verbrannte sie außerhalb Jerusalems im Tale Kedron und schaffte den Staub davon nach Bethel.

Auch rottete er die Wahrsager aus, welche die Könige von Juda bestellt hatten, um auf den Höhen in den Städten Judas und rings um Jerusalem her zu opfern; ebenso die, welche dem Baal und der Sonne und dem Monde und den zwölf Zeichen und dem ganzen Heere des Himmels Räucherwerk anzündeten.

Und er ließ den Hain aus dem Hause des Herrn hinaus außerhalb Jerusalems in das Tal Kedron schaffen und verbrannte ihn daselbst und machte ihn zu Staub und warf diesen auf die Gräber des gemeinen Volkes.

Auch zerstörte er die kleinen Häuser der Lustknaben, welche im Hause des Herrn waren, für welche Frauen eine Art von Hain-Zelten gewebt hatten.

Sodann versammelte er alle Priester aus den Städten Judas und verunreinigte die Höhen, wo die Priester opferten, von Gabaa bis Bersabee, und riss die Altäre an den Toren nieder am Eingange des Tores Josues, des Stadtobersten, welches zu Linken des Stadttores war.

Indes gingen die Priester der Höhen nicht zum Altare des Herrn nach Jerusalem hinauf, sondern aßen nur die ungesäuerten Brote inmitten ihrer Brüder.

Auch Topheth verunreinigte er, welches im Tale der Söhne Ennoms ist, damit niemand seinen Sohn oder seine Tochter durch das Feuer dem Moloch weihte.

Ferner schaffte er die Rosse ab, welche die Könige von Juda der Sonne geweiht hatten, am Eingange des Tempels des Herrn zunächst dem Gemache Nathanmelechs, des Kämmerers, der in Pharurim war; die Sonnenwagen aber verbrannte er im Feuer.

Auch die Altäre, die auf dem Dache des Oberzimmers des Achaz waren, welche die Könige von Juda errichtet hatten, sowie die Altäre, welche Manasses in den beiden Vorhöfen des Tempels des Herrn erbaut hatte, riss der König nieder und eilte von da hinweg und streute ihre Asche in den Bach Kedron.

Auch die Höhen, welche bei Jerusalem zur rechten Seite des Berges des Ärgernisses lagen, welche Salomon, der König von Israel, der Astarte, dem Götzen der Sidonier, und dem Chamos, dem Anstoße Moabs, und dem Melchom, dem Greuel der Söhne Ammons, errichtet hatte, verunreinigte der König.

Und er zermalmte die Bildsäulen und hieb die Haine um und füllte ihre Stätte mit Totenbeinen.

Auch den Altar, welcher zu Bethel war, und die Anhöhe, welche Jeroboam, der Sohn Nabats, gemacht, welcher Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte, auch diesen Altar und die Anhöhe zerstörte er und verbrannte sie und zermalmte sie zu Staub und verbrannte den Hain gleichfalls.

Als nun Josias sich umwandte und daselbst die Gräber sah, welche auf dem Berge waren, sandte er hin, nahm die Gebeine aus den Gräbern und verbrannte sie auf dem Altare und verunreinigte ihn so, dem Worte des Herrn gemäß, welches der Mann Gottes gesprochen, der diese Dinge vorhergesagt hatte.

Dann sprach er: Was ist das für ein Grabmal, das ich sehe? Die Bürger jener Stadt antworteten ihm: Es ist das Grab des Mannes Gottes, der von Juda kam und die Dinge verkündet hat, welche du an dem Altare von Bethel getan hast.

Da sprach er: Lasset ihn, niemand beunruhige seine Gebeine! So blieben seine Gebeine unberührt samt den Gebeinen des Propheten, welcher von Samaria gekommen war.

Auch alle Höhentempel, die in den Städten Samarias waren, welche die Könige von Israel erbaut hatten, so dass sie den Herrn zum Zorne reizten, schaffte Josias weg; und er verfuhr mit denselben ganz so, wie er zu Bethel getan hatte.

Und alle Priester der Höhen, die daselbst waren, tötete er bei den Altären, und er verbrannte Menschengebeine auf denselben und kehrte nach Jerusalem zurück.

(2. Chronik 35,1-19)

Alsdann gebot er allem Volke und sprach: Haltet dem Herrn, eurem Gott; Phase, dem gemäß, was im Buche dieses Bundes geschrieben steht.

Denn ein solches Phase war nicht gehalten worden seit den Tagen der Richter, welche in Israel gerichtet haben, und alle Tage der Könige von Israel und der Könige von Juda hindurch,

wie das Phase im achtzehnten Jahre des Königs Josias zu Jerusalem dem Herrn gehalten ward.

Auch die Wahrsager, die Zauberer, die Götzenbilder, die Unreinigkeiten und den Greuel, welche im Lande Juda und Jerusalem waren, schaffte Josias weg, um die Worte des Gesetzes zur Geltung zu bringen, welche in dem Buche geschrieben standen, das der Priester Helkias im Tempel des Herrn gefunden.

Und wie er, war vor ihm kein König, der sich zu dem Herrn aus ganzem Herzen und aus ganzer Seele und aus allen Kräften, nach dem ganzen Gesetze Moses gewendet hätte; und nach ihm ist keiner aufgestanden wie er.

Bevorstehendes Gericht über Juda

Dennoch aber ward der Herr nicht von dem Zorne seines großen Grimms abgewendet, in dem er wider Juda entbrannt war; um der Sünden willen, mit denen Manasses ihn zum Zorne gereizt hatte.

Darum sprach der Herr: Auch Juda will ich von meinem Angesichte verstoßen, wie ich Israel verstoßen habe; und ich will diese Stadt Jerusalem, die ich erwählt hatte, verwerfen und das Haus, von dem ich gesagt: Mein Name soll daselbst sein!

Josia stirbt in der Schlacht

(2. Chronik 35,20-24)

Was aber sonst von Josias zu sagen ist, alles, was er getan, steht das nicht geschrieben im Buche der Geschichte der Könige von Juda?

In seinen Tagen zog Pharao Nechao, der König von Ägypten, wider den König von Assyrien an den Strom Euphrat herauf; da zog ihm der König Josias entgegen und ward getötet in Mageddo, sobald er seiner ansichtig geworden war.

Da trugen ihn seine Diener tot von Mageddo fort und brachten ihn nach Jerusalem und begruben ihn in seinem Grabe. Und das Volk des Landes nahm Joachaz, den Sohn Josias, und salbte ihn und machte ihn zum Könige an seines Vaters Statt.

Die Herrschaft und Gefangenschaft von Joahas

(2. Chronik 36,1-4)

Dreiundzwanzig Jahre war Joachaz alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und drei Monate herrschte er zu Jerusalem; der Name seiner Mutter war Amital, eine Tochter Jeremias, aus Lobna.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn böse war, ganz wie seine Väter getan.

Und Pharao Nechao ließ ihn gefangen setzen in Rebla, das im Lande Emath liegt, dass er nicht mehr herrschte in Jerusalem, und er legte dem Lande eine Busse von hundert Talenten Silbers und einem Talente Goldes auf.

Dann machte Pharao Nechao Eliakim, den Sohn Josias, an seines Vaters Josias Statt, zum Könige und änderte seinen Namen in Joakim um; Joachaz aber nahm er und führte ihn nach Ägypten, wo er auch starb.

Jojakim regiert in Juda

Das Silber und Gold aber gab Joakim Pharao, nachdem er einen jeden im Lande eingeschätzt, um es nach dem Befehle Pharaos zusammen zu bringen; von einem jeden aus dem Volke des Landes forderte er nach dessen Vermögen, sowohl Silber als Gold, um es dem Pharao Nechao zu geben.

(2. Chronik 36,5-8)

Fünfundzwanzig Jahre war Joakim alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und elf Jahre herrschte er zu Jerusalem; der Name seiner Mutter war Zebida, eine Tochter Phadajas aus Ruma.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn böse war, ganz wie seine Väter getan.
