- Kapitel 22 -

(2 Chronicles 34:1–2)

Josiah was eight years old when he had begun to reign. He reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah, from Bozkath.

And he did what was pleasing before the Lord, and he walked in all the ways of his father David. He did not turn aside to the right, or to the left.

Funding the Temple Repairs

(2 Chronicles 34:8–13)

Then, in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe of the temple of the Lord, saying to him:

“Go to Hilkiah, the high priest, so that the money may be put together which has been brought into the temple of the Lord, which the doorkeepers of the temple have collected from the people.

And let it be given, by those in charge of the house of the Lord, to the workers. And let them distribute it to those who are working in the temple of the Lord in order to repair the surfaces of the temple,

specifically, to carpenters and masons, and to those who mend gaps, and so that wood may be purchased, and stones from the quarries, in order to repair the temple of the Lord.

Yet truly, let no account be given by them of the money that they receive. Instead, let them have it within their power and trust.”

Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law

(2 Chronicles 34:14–21)

Then Hilkiah, the high priest, said to Shaphan, the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the volume to Shaphan, and he read it.(a)

Also, Shaphan, the scribe, went to the king, and reported to him what he had instructed. And he said: “Your servants have brought together the money which was found in the house of the Lord. And they have given it so that it would be distributed to the workers by the overseers of the works of the temple of the Lord.”

Also, Shaphan, the scribe, explained to the king, saying, “Hilkiah, the priest, gave the book to me.” And when Shaphan had read it before the king,

and the king had heard the words of the book of the law of the Lord, he tore his garments.

And he instructed Hilkiah, the priest, and Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Achbor, the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan, the scribe, and Asaiah, the servant of the king, saying:

“Go and consult the Lord concerning me, and the people, and all of Judah, about the words of this volume which has been found. For the great wrath of the Lord has been kindled against us because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book, so that they would do all that has been written for us.”

Huldah’s Prophecy

(2 Chronicles 34:22–28)

Therefore, Hilkiah, the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah, the prophetess, the wife of Shallum, the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the vestments, who was living in Jerusalem, in the second part. And they spoke with her.(b)

And she responded to them: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me:

Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will lead evils over this place, and over its inhabitants, all the words of the law that the king of Judah has read.

For they have abandoned me, and they have sacrificed to foreign gods, provoking me by all the works of their hands. And so my indignation will be kindled against this place. And it will not be extinguished.

But to the king of Judah, who sent you so that you would consult the Lord, so shall you say: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: In so far as you have heard the words of the volume,

and your heart was terrified, and you humbled yourself before the Lord, listening to the words against this place and its inhabitants, specifically, that they would become an astonishment and a curse, and because you have torn your garments, and have wept before me: I also have heard you, says the Lord.

For this reason, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your sepulcher in peace, so that your eyes may not see all the evils that I will bring over this place.”

Josia regiert in Juda

(2. Chronik 34,1-2)

Acht Jahre war Josias alt, da er zu herrschen begann, und einunddreißig Jahre herrschte er zu Jerusalem; der Name seiner Mutter war Idida, eine Tochter Hadajas aus Besekath.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn wohlgefällig war, und wandelte auf allen Wegen seines Vaters David und wich nicht ab, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken.

Hilkija findet das Buch des Gesetzes

(2. Chronik 34,8-13)

Aber im achtzehnten Jahre des Königs Josias sandte der König Saphan, den Sohn Aslias, der ein Sohn Messulams war, den Schreiber des Tempels des Herrn, und sprach zu ihm:

Gehe hin zu dem Hohenpriester Helkias, dass man das Geld, welches in den Tempel des Herrn gebracht worden ist, welches die Türhüter des Tempels von dem Volke gesammelt haben, zusammentue.

Diese sollen es durch die Vorsteher des Hauses des Herrn den Werkleuten geben, damit sie es denen verteilen, die im Tempel des Herrn arbeiten, um das, was am Tempel baufällig ist, auszubessern:

nämlich den Zimmerleuten und den Steinmetzen und denen, welche die Lücken ausfüllen; und um Holz und Steine aus den Steinbrüchen zu kaufen, damit der Tempel des Herrn wiederhergestellt werde.

Doch berechne man ihnen das Geld, das sie empfangen, nicht, sondern sie mögen auf Treu und Glauben damit schalten.

(2. Chronik 34,14-21)

Da sprach der Hohepriester Helkias zu dem Schreiber Saphan: Das Gesetzbuch habe ich im Hause des Herrn gefunden; und Helkias gab das Buch Saphan und dieser las es.

Als nun der Schreiber Saphan zu dem Könige kam, gab er ihm über das Bericht, was jener befohlen hatte, und sprach: Deine Diener haben das Geld zusammengetan, welches sich im Hause des Herrn vorfand, und haben es zur Verteilung an die Werkleute den Leitern der Arbeiten am Tempel des Herrn übergeben.

Auch erzählte der Schreiber Saphan dem Könige und sprach: Der Priester Helkias hat mir ein Buch gegeben. Als nun Saphan es vor dem Könige las

und der König die Worte des Gesetzbuches des Herrn hörte, zerriss er seine Kleider

und befahl Helkias, dem Priester, und Ahikam, dem Sohne Saphans, und Achobor, dem Sohne Michas, und Saphan, dem Schreiber, und Asaja, dem Diener des Königs, und sprach:

Gehet hin und befraget den Herrn über mich und über das Volk und über ganz Juda inbetreff der Worte dieses Buches, welches aufgefunden worden ist; denn groß ist der Zorn des Herrn, der gegen uns entbrannt ist, weil unsere Väter nicht auf die Worte dieses Buches gehört haben, um alles zu tun, was uns vorgeschrieben ist.

(2. Chronik 34,22-28)

Da gingen der Priester Helkias und Ahikam und Achobor und Saphan und Asaja zu Holda, der Prophetin, dem Weibe Sellums, des Sohnes Thekuas, des Sohnes Araas, des Kleiderhüters, welche in Jerusalem im zweiten Teile wohnte, und sie redeten mit ihr.

Sie antwortete ihnen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Saget dem Manne, der euch zu mir gesendet hat:

Also spricht der Herr: Siehe, ich werde über diesen Ort und über seine Bewohner Unglück kommen lassen, alle Worte des Gesetzes, welche der König von Juda gelesen hat;

dafür dass sie mich verlassen und fremden Göttern geopfert und mich mit allen Werken ihrer Hände zum Zorne gereizt haben, und mein Zorn wird an diesem Ort entbrennen und wird nicht erlöschen.

Zu dem Könige von Juda aber, der euch gesandt hat, um den Herrn zu befragen, saget: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Weil du die Worte des Buches gehört hast

und dein Herz erschrocken ist und du dich vor dem Herrn verdemütigt hast, als du die Reden wider diesen Ort und seine Bewohner hörtest, dass sie nämlich zum Entsetzen und zum Fluche werden sollen und du deine Kleider zerrissen und vor mir geweint hast, so habe auch ich dich erhört, spricht der Herr.

Darum will ich dich zu deinen Vätern sammeln und du sollst in Frieden in dein Grab gesammelt werden, so dass deine Augen nicht all das Unglück sehen, das ich über diesen Ort kommen lassen werde.
