(Ruth 4:18–22; Luke 3:23–38)

This is the record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, the descendant of King David and of Abraham.

Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and of his brothers.

Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, and their mother was Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram.

Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.

Salmon and his wife Rahab, a non-Jewish woman, were the parents of Boaz. Boaz was the father of Obed. Obed’s mother was Ruth, another non-Jewish woman. Obed was the father of Jesse.

Jesse was the father of King David. David became the father of Solomon; Solomon’s mother was the wife of Uriah.

Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa.

Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram. Joram was an ancestor of Uzziah.

Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.

Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah.

Josiah was the grandfather of Jechoniah and Jechoniah’s brothers. They lived at the time when the Babylonian army took the Israelites as captives to the country of Babylon.

After the Babylonians exiled the Israelites to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was an ancestor of Zerubbabel.

Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.

Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the father of Eliud.

Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.

Jacob was the father of Joseph. Joseph was Mary's husband, and Mary was Jesus’ mother. Jesus is the one who is called the Messiah.

The list of Jesus’ ancestors is as follows: Fourteen of them from the time when Abraham lived to the time when King David lived. There were another fourteen from the time when David lived until the time when the Israelites went away to Babylon, and then yet another fourteen from then until the time when the Messiah was born.

The Birth of Jesus

(Isaiah 7:10–16; Luke 2:1–7)

This is the account of what happened just before Jesus the Messiah was born. Mary, his mother, had promised to marry Joseph, but before they lived together as husband and wife, they found out that she was expecting a child by the Holy Spirit’s power.

Now Joseph, who was to be her husband, was a man who obeyed God’s commands, so he decided not to marry her. But he did not want to shame her in front of other people. So he decided to quietly drop his plans to marry her.

While he was seriously considering this, an angel whom the Lord sent surprised him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, descendant of King David, do not be afraid to marry Mary. For what has been conceived in her is there by the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son. Since it is he who will save his people from their sins, name him ‘Jesus.’”

All this happened to make come true what the Lord told the prophet Isaiah to write long ago. Isaiah wrote,

“Listen, a virgin will become pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will call him Immanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”
24
When Joseph got up from sleep, he did what the angel had commanded him to do. He began to live with Mary as his wife.
25
But he did not sleep with her until she had given birth to a son. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Judas aber zeugte den Phares und den Zara von der Thamar, Phares aber zeugte den Esron; Esron aber zeugte den Aram.

Aram aber zeugte den Aminadab: Aminadab aber zeugte den Naasson; Naasson aber zeugte den Salmon.

Salmon aber zeugte den Booz von der Rahab; Booz aber zeugte den Obed mit der Ruth; Obed aber zeugte den Jesse; Jesse aber zeugte David, den König.

David aber, der König, zeugte den Salomon mit der, welche des Urias Weib gewesen.

Salomon aber zeugte den Roboam; Roboam aber zeugte den Asa.

Asa aber zeugte den Josaphat; Josaphat aber zeugte den Joram; Joram aber zeugte den Ozias.

Ozias aber zeugte den Joatham; Joatham aber zeugte den Achaz; Achaz aber zeugte den Ezechias.

Ezechias aber zeugte den Manasses, Manasses aber zeugte den Amon; Amon aber zeugte den Josias.

Josias aber zeugte den Jechonias und dessen Brüder um die Zeit der Übersiedlung nach Babylon.

Und nach der Übersiedlung nach Babylon zeugte Jechonias den Salathiel; Salathiel aber zeugte den Zorobabel.
13
Zorobabel aber zeugte den Abiud; Abiud aber zeugte den Eliacim; Eliacim aber zeugte den Azor.
14
Azor aber zeugte den Sadok; Sadok aber zeugte den Achim; Achim aber zeugte den Eliud.
15
Eliud aber zeugte den Eleazar; Eleazar aber zeugte den Mathan; Mathan aber zeugte den Jakob.
16
Jakob aber zeugte den Joseph, den Mann Marias, von welcher geboren ward Jesus, der genannt wird Christus.
17
Alle Geschlechter somit von Abraham bis auf David sind vierzehn Geschlechter; und von David bis zur Übersiedlung nach Babylon vierzehn Geschlechter; und von der Übersiedlung nach Babylon bis auf Christus vierzehn Geschlechter.

Christus, geboren von Maria

(Jesaja 7,10-16; Lukas 2,1-7)

Mit der Geburt Christi aber verhielt es sich also: Als seine Mutter Maria mit Joseph verlobt war, erschien es, ehe sie zusammenkamen, daß sie empfangen hatte vom heiligen Geiste.

Joseph aber, ihr Mann, weil er gerecht war und sie nicht in üblen Ruf bringen wollte, gedachte sie im Stillen zu entlassen.

Während er aber mit diesem Gedanken umging, siehe, da erschien ihm der Engel des Herrn im Traume und sprach: Joseph, Sohn Davids! fürchte dich nicht, Maria, dein Weib, zu dir zu nehmen, denn was in ihr erzeugt worden, ist vom heiligen Geiste.

Sie wird aber einen Sohn gebären; und du wirst seinen Namen Jesus nennen, denn er wird sein Volk von seinen Sünden erlösen.

Dies alles ist geschehen, auf daß erfüllet würde, was von dem Herrn durch den Propheten gesagt worden, der da spricht:

Siehe, die Jungfrau wird empfangen und einen Sohn gebären; und sie werden seinen Namen Emmanuel nennen, was verdolmetschet heißt: Gott mit uns!
24
Da nun Joseph vom Schlafe erwachte, tat er, wie ihm der Engel des Herrn befohlen hatte, und nahm sein Weib zu sich.
25
Und er erkannte sie nicht, bis sie ihren Sohn, den Erstgeborenen, gebar; und er nannte seinen Namen Jesus.
