- Kapitel 18 -

(Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53)

When Jesus finished his prayer, he went with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a grove of olive trees, and they entered it.

Judas, the one who was about to hand Jesus over to his enemies, knew where the place was because Jesus often went there with his disciples.

Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had ordered some soldiers and officers to go there with Judas. So they went to the garden with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Jesus knew what was going to happen to him, so he went forward and asked them, “For whom are you looking?”

They replied to him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I am that person.” (Now Judas, the one who was handing him over, was standing with them.)

When Jesus said to them, “I am that person,” they swiftly moved back and fell to the ground.

So he asked them again, “For whom are you looking?” They answered, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

Jesus replied to them, “I told you that I am that person. Since I am the one you are looking for, let these other men go.

This happened in order to fulfill the words he had said when he was praying to his Father, “I did not lose even one of those you gave me.”

Then Simon Peter drew out a short sword and struck the high priest’s servant, a man named Malchus, and cut off his right ear.

Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath! Of course I will suffer in the way that my Father has planned for me to do.”

Then the group of soldiers, along with their captain and some of the temple guards, seized Jesus and tied him to prevent him from escaping.

Then they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.

It was Caiaphas who had advised other leaders that it would be better that one man should die for the people than that all the people should perish.

Peter’s First Denial

(Matthew 26:69–70; Mark 14:66–68; Luke 22:54–57)

Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple. The other disciple was known to the high priest, so he had permission to enter the high priest’s courtyard when the soldiers took Jesus.

Peter had to stop outside at the gate. So the other disciple went out again and spoke to the servant girl who was watching the gate, and she let Peter in.

That servant girl said to Peter, “You are one the disciples of the man whom they have arrested, are you not?” He said, “No, I am not.”

It was cold, so the high priest’s servants and temple guards made a charcoal fire and were standing and warming themselves around it. Peter was also there with them. He was standing and warming himself.

Jesus before the High Priest

(Matthew 26:57–68; Mark 14:53–65; Luke 22:66–71)

The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and what he had been teaching them.

Jesus replied, “I have spoken openly to everyone. I have always taught in the synagogues and in the temple, in the places where our people come together. I have said nothing in secret.

So why are you asking me these questions? Ask the people who heard what I taught them. They know what I said.”

When Jesus said these things, one of the temple guards standing near him struck him hard with his hand. He said, “That is not the right way to answer the high priest.”

Jesus replied to him, “If I had said something wrong, tell me what it was. However, if what I said was right, you should not slap me!”

Then Annas sent Jesus, who was still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

(Matthew 26:71–75; Mark 14:69–72; Luke 22:58–62)

Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. Another person said to him, “You are one of the disciples of the man whom they have arrested, are you not?” He said, “No, I am not.”

One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said to him, “Surely I saw you in the olive tree grove with the man they have arrested, did I not?”

Peter again denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

(Matthew 27:11–14; Luke 23:1–5)

Then the soldiers led Jesus from Caiaphas’ house to the headquarters of Pilate, the Roman governor. It was early morning. Pilate was not a Jew, so Jesus’ accusers thought that if they entered his headquarters, they would defile themselves and be unable to celebrate the Passover Festival. So they did not go in.

So Pilate came out to talk to them. He said, “Of what are you accusing this man?”

“If this man were not a criminal, we would not have brought him to you!” they replied.

Then Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him by your own law.” Then the Jewish leaders said, “We want to execute him, but your Roman law prevents us from doing that.”

They said this in order to make true what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

Pilate then went back inside his headquarters. He summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

Jesus replied, “Are you asking because you yourself want to know, or did others tell you to ask me this question?”

Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew! Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done wrong?”

Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not part of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting to keep me from being handed over to my Jewish opponents, but my kingdom is not of this world.”

Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus replied, “Yes. The reason I was born and came into this world was to tell people the truth about God. Everyone who loves the truth listens to me.”

Pilate asked him, “What is true?” After Pilate asked that question, he went outside and talked to the Jewish leaders again. He said to them, “I find he has broken no law.

However, you Jews have a custom where every year during the Passover Festival, you ask me to release one man who is in prison. So would you like for me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

They shouted again, “No, do not release this man, but release Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

Verrat und Verhaftung in Gethsemane

(Matthäus 26,47-56; Markus 14,43-52; Lukas 22,47-53)

Als Jesus dies gesagt hatte, begab er sich mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Bach Cedron, wo ein Garten war in diesen trat er mit den Jüngern ein.

Es wusste aber auch Judas, welcher ihn verriet, den Ort; denn Jesus war oft mit seinen Jüngern dorthin gekommen.

Da nun Judas die Wache mitgenommen hatte und Diener von den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern, kam er mit Laternen, Fackeln und Waffen dahin.

Jesus nun, der alles wusste, was über ihn kommen sollte, trat hervor, und sprach zu ihnen: Wen suchet ihr?

Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus von Nazareth. Jesus sprach zu ihnen: ich bin es! Es stand aber auch Judas, der ihn verriet, bei ihnen.

Als er ihnen nun sagte: Ich bin es! wichen sie zurück, und fielen zu Boden.

Da fragte er sie wiederum: Wen suchet ihr? Sie aber sagten: Jesus von Nazareth.

Jesus antwortete: ich habe es euch gesagt, dass ich es bin; wenn ihr also mich suchet, so lasset diese gehen.

Damit das Wort erfüllet würde, welches er gesprochen hatte: Die du mir gegeben hast, keinen von ihnen habe ich verloren.

Simon Petrus also, der sein Schwert hatte, zog es und schlug den Knecht des Hohenpriesters, und hieb ihm sein rechtes Ohr ab. Der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus.

Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke dein Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch, den mir der Vater gegeben hat, nicht trinken?

Vor dem Hohepriester

Die Wache aber, der Kriegsoberst und die Diener der Juden ergriffen Jesus, und banden ihn.

Und sie führten ihn zuerst zu Annas; er war nämlich der Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, welcher in diesem Jahre Hoherpriester war.

Kaiphas aber war derjenige, welcher den Juden den Rat gegeben hatte: Es ist gut, wenn ein Mensch für das Volk stirbt.

Petrus verleugnet Jesus

(Matthäus 26,69-70; Markus 14,66-68; Lukas 22,54-57)

Simon Petrus aber und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus nach. Dieser Jünger war dem Hohenpriester bekannt, und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Vorhof des Hohenpriesters.

Petrus aber stand draußen am Torweg. Da ging der andere Jünger, welcher dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus, redete mit der Torhüterin, und führte Petrus hinein.

Da sprach die Magd, welche Torhüterin war, zu Petrus: Bist etwa auch du einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Er sprach: Ich bin keiner.

Es standen aber die Knechte und die Diener am Kohlenfeuer, und wärmten sich, denn es war kalt; auch Petrus stand bei ihnen, und wärmte sich.

Jesus wird vom Hohenpriester befragt

(Matthäus 26,57-68; Markus 14,53-65; Lukas 22,66-71)

Der Hohepriester also fragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.

Jesus antwortete ihm: ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe allezeit in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen; und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet.

Was fragst du mich? Frage diejenigen, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe.

Als er aber dieses gesagt hatte, gab einer von den Dienern, der dabei stand, Jesus einen Backenstreich, und sprach: So antwortest du dem Hohenpriester?

Jesus antwortete ihm: Wen ich unrecht geredet habe, so beweise, dass es unrecht sei; wenn ich aber recht geredet habe, warum schlägst du mich?

Und Annas schickte ihn gebunden zu dem Hohenpriester Kaiphas.

Petrus leugnet noch zweimal

(Matthäus 26,71-75; Markus 14,69-72; Lukas 22,58-62)

Simon Petrus aber stand da, und wärmte sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist etwa auch du einer von seinen Jüngern? Er leugnete, und sprach: Ich bin es nicht.

Einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter desjenigen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte, sprach zu ihm: Habe ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm gesehen?

Da leugnete Petrus abermals; und sogleich krähte der Hahn.

In Pilatus' Gericht

(Matthäus 27,11-14; Lukas 23,1-5)

Sie führten nun Jesus von Kaiphas in das Gerichtshaus. Es war aber früh Morgens. Sie selbst gingen nicht in das Gerichtshaus hinein, damit sie nicht unrein würden, sondern das Ostermahl essen dürften.

Pilatus ging also zu ihnen hinaus, und sprach: Welche Anklage bringt ihr gegen diesen Menschen vor?

Sie antworteten, und sprachen zu ihm: Wenn dieser kein Übeltäter wäre, so würden wir ihn dir nicht überliefert haben.

Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: Nehmet ihr ihn hin, und richtet ihn nach euerm Gesetze! Die Juden aber sagten zu ihm: Uns ist es nicht erlaubt, jemanden zu töten.

Damit das Wort Jesu erfüllet würde, das er gesagt hatte, um anzudeuten, welches Todes er sterben werde.

Da ging Pilatus wieder in das Gerichtshaus hinein, rief Jesus, und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der König der Juden?

Jesus antwortete: Sagst du dieses von dir selbst, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt?

Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überliefert; was hast du getan?

Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt. Wenn mein Reich von dieser Welt wäre, so würden wohl meine Diener kämpfen, dass ich den Juden nicht überliefert würde. Nun aber ist mein Reich nicht von hinnen.

Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: Also ein König bist du? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es, ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren, und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich der Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe. Jeder der aus der Wahrheit ist, höret meine Stimme.

Pilatus sprach zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und da er dies gesagt hatte, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden, und sprach zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm.

Er nimmt den Platz von Barabbas ein

Es ist aber bei euch Herkommen, dass ich euch am Osterfeste einen freigebe. Wollt ihr nun, dass ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?

Da schrieen sie wiederum alle, und sagten: Nicht diesen, sondern den Barabbas. Barabbas aber war ein Räuber.
