- Kapitel 12 -

Then Samuel said this to all the Israelite people: “I have done everything that you told me to do, and I have given a king to rule you.

My own sons are grown up and with you now, but I have appointed Saul instead of one of them, and he is now your leader. I am now old, and my hair is gray. I have been your leader ever since I was a boy.

Now tell me, while Yahweh is listening, and while the king whom he has chosen is listening, whose ox or donkey have I stolen during all those years? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed badly? From whom have I accepted a bribe, in order that I would ignore the evil things he had done? If I have done any of these things, tell me, and I will pay back what I owe.”

They replied, “No, you have never cheated anyone or oppressed anyone or accepted a bribe from anyone.”

Then Samuel said, “Today Yahweh can testify, and the king whom you chose can testify, that I have not taken a bribe from anyone.” They replied, “Yes, Yahweh can say that he knows that is true.”

Samuel continued by saying, “Yahweh is the one who appointed Moses and Aaron to lead our ancestors. He is the one who brought them out of Egypt. And he is the one who will testify that what I am saying is true.

Now while Yahweh is listening, stand here quietly while I accuse you and tell you that your requesting a king instead of trusting Yahweh to lead you was wrong. I will do that by reminding you of all the great miracles that Yahweh performed for you and your ancestors.

Many years after our ancestor Jacob went to Egypt, his descendants pleaded to Yahweh to help them. So Yahweh sent Moses and Aaron to them, and they led our ancestors out of Egypt, and eventually they settled in this land.

But our ancestors soon forgot about Yahweh, their God. So he allowed Sisera, the commander of the army from Hazor, to defeat them. He also allowed the Philistines and the army of the king of Moab to fight our ancestors and defeat them.

Then our ancestors pleaded with Yahweh again to help them. They admitted, ‘Yahweh, we have sinned, and we have forsaken you. We have worshiped idols that represent the god Baal and the goddess Ashtoreth. But if you rescue us from our enemies, we will worship you only.’

So Yahweh sent men such as Gideon, Barak, Jephthah, and me to save you. And as a result, you did not have to worry about any enemies attacking you.

But now, when King Nahash of Ammon came with his army to attack you, you were afraid. So you came to me, and said, ‘We want a king to rule us,’ even though Yahweh was already your king!

So now, look, here is the king whom you have chosen. You asked for a king, and Yahweh has now appointed a king for you.

If you honor Yahweh and if you serve him, and if you listen to what he says and obey what he commands, and if you and the king who rules over you do what Yahweh your God wants you to do, things will go well for you all.

But if you do not listen to what Yahweh says, if you disobey what he commands, then he will punish you, just as he punished our ancestors.

Now stand here quietly and see the great thing that Yahweh is about to do.

You know that it does not rain at this time of the year, during the time when you harvest wheat. But I will ask Yahweh to send thunder and lightning and rain today. When he does that, you will realize that Yahweh considers that you have done a very wicked thing by requesting a king.”

Then Samuel prayed to Yahweh, and Yahweh caused it to thunder and lightning and rain. So all the people became very afraid of Yahweh and of Samuel.

They cried out to Samuel, “Pray for us! We have added to our previous sins by requesting a king! Pray to Yahweh, your God, in order that we will not die because of having done that!”

Samuel replied, “Do not be afraid! You have done this evil thing, but do not stop doing the things that Yahweh wants you to do. Instead, serve Yahweh with your whole inner being.

Do not abandon Yahweh and worship useless idols. They cannot help you or save you from your enemies, because they are truly useless.

Yahweh decided to make us his people. So he will not abandon us people whom he has chosen, because he would injure his own reputation of being completely faithful if he did that.

But as for me, I have solemnly promised that I will not sin against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you what things are good and right for you to do.

But you must honor Yahweh and serve him with your whole inner being. Never forget all the great things that he has done for you.

If you keep doing wicked things, he will get rid of you and your king!”

Samuels Ansprache bei Sauls Krönung

Samuel aber sprach zu ganz Israel: Sehet, ich habe in allem, was ihr zu mir gesprochen, eurer Stimme gehorcht und habe einen König über euch gesetzt.

So geht nun der König vor euch her; ich aber bin alt und grau geworden und meine Söhne sind unter euch. So habe ich nun vor euch gewandelt von meiner Jugend an bis auf diesen Tag, sehet, hier bin ich!

Saget von mir vor dem Herrn und vor seinem Gesalbten, ob ich jemandes Ochsen oder Esel weggenommen; ob ich jemanden bedrückt oder ihm Gewalt angetan; ob ich von jemandes Hand ein Geschenk angenommen habe? so will ich es heute gering achten und euch zurückerstatten.

Da sprachen sie: Du hast uns nicht bedrückt noch uns Gewalt angetan, noch aus jemandes Hand etwas angenommen.

Er sprach zu ihnen: Der Herr ist Zeuge wider euch und sein Gesalbter ist Zeuge an diesem Tage, dass ihr in meiner Hand nichts gefunden habt. Sie sprachen: Er ist Zeuge!

Und Samuel sprach zu dem Volke: Zeuge ist der Herr, welcher Moses und Aaron bestellt und unsere Väter aus dem Lande Ägypten geführt hat.

Nun aber tretet herzu, dass ich über euch vor dem Herrn wegen aller Erbarmungen des Herrn Gerichte halte, die er an euch und an euren Vätern geübt hat;

wie Jakob nach Ägypten zog, und eure Väter zu dem Herrn schrien, und der Herr Moses und Aaron sandte und eure Väter aus Ägypten führte und sie an diesen Ort versetzte.

Aber sie vergaßen des Herrn, ihres Gottes, und er gab sie in die Hände Sisaras, des Heerführers von Hasor, und in die Hand der Philister, und in die Hand des Königs von Moab, und diese kämpften wider sie.

Darnach aber riefen sie zu dem Herrn und sprachen: Wir haben gesündigt, dass wir den Herrn verlassen und den Baalen und Astarten gedient haben; nun also rette uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde, so wollen wir dir dienen.

Da sandte der Herr Jerobaal und Badan, und Jephte, und Samuel, und errettete euch aus der Hand eurer Feinde ringsum, das ihr in Sicherheit wohntet.

Als ihr aber sahet, dass Naas, der König der Söhne Ammons, gegen euch anrückte, sprachet ihr zu mir: Mit nichten! Sondern ein König soll über uns herrschen, während doch der Herr, euer Gott, euer König war.

Nun also, hier ist euer König, den ihr erwählt und verlangt habt; sehet, der Herr hat euch einen König gegeben.

Wenn ihr den Herrn fürchtet und ihm dient und auf seine Stimme hört und den Mund des Herrn nicht erbittert, so werdet ihr und der König, der über euch herrscht, dem Herrn, eurem Gott, folgen.

Wenn ihr aber nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn hört, sondern gegen seine Gebote widerspenstig seid, so wird die Hand des Herrn sich auf euch legen wie auf eure Väter.

Und nun tretet her und schauet die große Tat, welche der Herr vor euern Augen vollbringen wird.

Ist nicht jetzt die Weizenernte? Ich werde den Herrn anrufen, und er wird Donner und Regen geben; und ihr werdet erkennen und sehen, dass ihr euch ein großes Übel vor dem Herrn angetan habt, da ihr einen König über euch verlangtet.

Und Samuel rief zu dem Herrn, und der Herr sandte an diesem Tage Donner und Regen.

Da geriet das ganze Volk in große Furcht vor dem Herrn und vor Samuel, und das gesamte Volk sprach zu Samuel: Bete für deine Knechte zu dem Herrn, deinem Gott, auf dass wir nicht sterben; denn zu all unsern Sünden haben wir noch das Übel hinzugefügt, einen König über uns zu verlangen.

Samuel aber sprach zu dem Volke: Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr habt zwar all dies Böse getan, aber lasset nicht ab dem Herrn zu folgen, sondern dienet dem Herrn von ganzem Herzen,

und wendet euch nicht den nichtigen Götzen zu, die euch nichts nützen noch euch erretten werden, weil sie nichtig sind.

Dann wird der Herr sein Volk um seines großen Namens willen nicht verlassen; denn der Herr hat geschworen, euch zu seinem Volke zu machen.

Aber von mir sei diese Sünde wider den Herrn fern, dass ich ablassen sollte, für euch zu beten, vielmehr will ich euch den guten und rechten Weg lehren.

Fürchtet also den Herrn und dienet ihm in Wahrheit und von ganzem Herzen; denn ihr habt die großen Taten gesehen, die er an euch vollbracht hat.

Wenn ihr aber in der Bosheit beharrt, so werdet ihr und euer König allzumal umkommen.
