- Kapitel 11 -

About a month later, King Nahash of Ammon led his army across the Jordan River, and they surrounded the city of Jabesh in the region of Gilead. But all the men of Jabesh appointed someone who said to Nahash, “Make an agreement with us not to kill us, and then we will let you rule us.”

Nahash replied, “I will do that if you do one thing. Allow us to gouge out all the right eyes of your people. By doing that we will cause the people in other countries to despise all you Israelite people.”

The leaders of Jabesh replied, “Do not attack us for the next seven days. During that time, we will send messengers throughout Israel to tell them what you are demanding. If no one will help us, then we will surrender to you.”

So the leaders of Jabesh sent messengers throughout Israel. When the messengers came to Gibeah, which was the city where Saul lived, and they told the people there about the situation, everyone started to cry.

At that time, Saul was plowing in the field. When he returned home, he asked, “Why are all the people crying?” So they told him what the messengers from Jabesh had reported.

Then God’s Spirit came powerfully upon Saul, and he became very angry because of what Nahash wanted to do.

He took two of his oxen and killed them and cut them into pieces. Then he sent messengers carrying those pieces throughout Israel to tell people this message: “Saul says that he cut this ox in pieces, and that he will do the same thing to the oxen of anyone who refuses to come with him and Samuel to fight the army from Ammon!” Then Yahweh caused all the people of Israel to be afraid of what Saul might do to them if they did not go and help Saul. So the men all gathered together.

When Saul counted them at Bezek, he saw that there were 300,000 Israelite men there, as well as thirty thousand men from the tribe of Judah.

So Saul sent messengers back to the people at Jabesh to tell them, “We will rescue you by the time the weather is hot tomorrow morning.” The messengers went and told the people of Jabesh, who became very happy when they heard the news.

Then the men of Jabesh told Nahash, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and then you can do to us whatever you want to.”

But before the sun rose the next morning, Saul and his army arrived. He divided them into three groups. They rushed into the camp of the soldiers from Ammon, and attacked them. By noontime they had killed most of them, and those who were not killed scattered. Each of them who ran away ran away alone.

Saul Confirmed as King

Then the people of Jabesh said to Samuel, “Where are those men who said that they did not want Saul to be our king? Bring them here, and we will kill them!”

But Saul replied, “No, we are not going to execute anyone today, because this is the day that Yahweh has saved us Israelite people. It is a day to rejoice, not to kill anyone.”

Then Samuel said to the people, “Let us all go to Gilgal, and there we will again proclaim that Saul is our king.”

So they went to Gilgal. There, knowing that Yahweh was watching, they proclaimed that Saul was their king. Then they offered sacrifices to enable them to continue to have fellowship with Yahweh. And Saul and all the other Israelite people were very happy.

Saul rettet Jabesch Gilead

Und es begab sich, etwa einen Monat darauf, dass Naas, der Ammoniter, heraufzog und gegen Jabes in Galaad zu kämpfen begann. Da sprachen alle Männer von Jabes zu Naas: Nimm uns zu deinen Bundesgenossen an, so wollen wir dir dienstbar sein.

Aber Naas, der Ammoniter, antwortete ihnen: Unter der Bedingung will ich einen Bund mit euch machen, dass ich euch allen das rechte Auge aussteche und euch zur Schande mache in ganz Israel.

Da sprachen die Ältesten von Jabes zu ihm: Gib uns sieben Tage Frist, dass wir Boten in das ganze Gebiet von Israel senden; wenn dann niemand da ist, der uns verteidigt, so wollen wir zu dir hinausziehen.

So kamen denn die Boten nach Gabaa, der Stadt Sauls, und redeten diese Worte vor dem Volke; da erhob das ganze Volk seine Stimme und weinte.

Und siehe, Saul kam hinter den Ochsen her vom Felde und sprach: Was hat das Volk, dass es weint? Als sie ihm nun die Botschaft der Männer von Jabes mitteilten,

kam der Geist des Herrn über Saul, da er diese Worte hörte, und er geriet in heftigen Zorn.

Und er nahm beide Ochsen, hieb sie in Stücke, sandte sie durch die Boten in das ganze Gebiet von Israel und ließ sagen: Wer nicht mit auszieht und Saul und Samuel folgt, dessen Ochsen soll es also ergehen. Da befiel die Furcht des Herrn das Volk, und sie zogen aus wie ein Mann.

Als er sie nun in Bezech musterte, waren der Söhne Israels dreihunderttausend Mann, der Männer von Juda aber dreißigtausend.

Da sprachen sie zu den Boten, welche gekommen waren: So sprechet zu den Männern, die in Jabes Galaad sind: Morgen wird euch Rettung werden, wenn die Sonne heiß scheint. Die Boten kamen also und verkündeten es den Männern von Jabes, und diese freuten sich

und sprachen: Morgen werden wir zu euch hinausziehen, dann möget ihr uns alles antun, was euch gefällt.

Und es geschah, als der folgende Tag kam, stellte Saul das Volk in drei Heerhaufen auf, drang um die Morgenwache mitten in das Lager und schlug die Ammoniter, bis der Tag heiß wurde; die aber übrigblieben, wurden so zerstreut, dass ihrer nicht zwei beisammen blieben.

Da sprach das Volk zu Samuel: Wer ist es, der gesagt hat: Soll etwa Saul über uns König sein? Gebet die Männer her, dass wir sie töten.

Saul aber sprach: Niemand soll an diesem Tage getötet werden; denn heute hat der Herr in Israel Heil gewirkt.

Und Samuel sprach zu dem Volke: Kommet, lasset uns nach Galgala gehen und daselbst das Königtum erneuern!

Da zog das ganze Volk nach Galgala, und sie machten daselbst Saul vor dem Herrn in Galgala zum Könige und brachten ebenda vor dem Herrn Friedopfer dar. Und Saul und alle Männer Israels waren dort überaus fröhlich.
