- Kapitel 4 -

Now when Solomon was king over all Israel,

these were his most important officials: Azariah, whose father was Zadok, was the priest.

Shisha’s sons Elihoreph and Ahijah were the official secretaries. Ahilud’s son Jehoshaphat was the one who announced to the people the king’s decisions.

Benaiah was the army commander. Zadok and Abiathar were also priests.

Azariah, whose father was Nathan, was in charge of the governors. Another of Nathan’s sons, Zabud, was a priest and the king’s chief advisor.

Ahishar supervised the servants who worked in the palace. Abda’s son Adoniram supervised the men who were forced to do work for the king.

Solomon’s Twelve Officers

Solomon appointed twelve men to govern the districts in Israel. They also were required to provide food for the king and all the others who lived and worked in the palace. Each man was required to provide from his own district the food for one month in each year.

Their names were: Ben-Hur, for the hill area of the tribe of Ephraim.

Ben-Deker, for the cities of Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh, and Elon Bethhanan,

Ben-Hesed, for the cities of Arubboth and Sokoh and the area near the city of Hepher,

Ben-Abinadab, who was married to Solomon’s daughter Taphath, for all the district of Dor,

Ahilud’s son Baana, for the cities of Taanach and Megiddo, for all the region near the city of Zarethan, and from the city of Beth Shan south of Jezreel as far as the cities of Abel Meholah and Jokmeam,

Ben-Geber, for the city of Ramoth in the region of Gilead, for the villages in Gilead that belonged to Jair, who was a descendant of Manasseh, and for the area of Argob in the region of Bashan. There were sixty large cities in that region altogether, each city with a wall around it and bronze bars across the gates.

Iddo’s son Ahinadab, for the city of Mahanaim east of the Jordan River;

Ahimaaz, who had married Solomon’s daughter Basemath, for the territory of the tribe of Naphtali,

Hushai’s son Baana, for the territory of the tribe of Asher and for the city of Aloth,

Paruah’s son Jehoshaphat, for the territory of the tribe of Issachar,

Ela’s son Shimei, for the territory of the tribe of Benjamin,

Uri’s son Geber, for the region of Gilead, the land that Sihon the king of the Amor people group formerly ruled, and Og who formerly ruled the region of Bashan. In addition to all these, Solomon appointed one governor for the territory of the tribe of Judah.

Solomon’s Prosperity

There were as many people in Judah and Israel as there are grains of sand on the seashore. They had plenty to eat and drink, and they were happy.

Solomon’s kingdom extended from the Euphrates River in the northeast to the region of Philistia in the west and to the border of Egypt in the south. The conquered people in those areas paid taxes and were under Solomon’s control all during his life.

The people whom Solomon ruled were required to bring to Solomon every day thirty donkey-loads of fine flour and sixty donkey-loads of wheat,

ten head of cattle that had been raised in stalls, twenty head of cattle raised in pastures, one hundred sheep, grain-fed poultry, and wild game: deer, gazelle, and roebucks.

Solomon ruled over all the area west of the Euphrates River, from the city of Tiphsah in the northeast to the city of Gaza in the southwest. He ruled over all the kings in that area. There was peace between his government and the governments of nearby countries.

All during the years that Solomon ruled, the people of Judah and Israel lived safely.

Solomon had forty thousand stalls for the horses that pulled his chariots and twelve thousand men who rode on horses.

His twelve district governors supplied the food that King Solomon needed for himself and for all those who ate in the palace. Each governor supplied food for one month each year. They provided everything that Solomon required.

They also brought stalks of barley and wheat for the fast horses that pulled the chariots and for the other work horses. They brought this fodder to the places where the horses were kept.

Solomon’s Wisdom

God enabled Solomon to be extremely wise and to have great understanding. He enjoyed learning about a huge number of things.

He was wiser than all the wise men in the regions east of Israel, and all the wise men in Egypt.

Ethan from Ezrah and Heman and Kalkol and Darda and the sons of Mahol were considered to be very wise, but Solomon was wiser than all of them. People in all the nearby countries heard about Solomon.

He composed more than one thousand songs.

He talked about various kinds of plants, from the huge cedar trees in Lebanon to the tiny hyssop plants that grow in cracks in walls. He also talked about wild animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.

People came from all over the world to hear the wise things that Solomon said. Many kings sent men to listen to him and then return and tell them what Solomon said.

Salomos Verwaltung

So war Salomon König und herrschte über ganz Israel.

Und dies sind die Höchsten, die er hatte: Azarias, der Sohn Sadoks, des Priesters;

Elihoreph und Ahia, die Söhne Sisas, Schreiber; Josaphat, der Sohn Ahiluds, Kanzler;

Banajas, der Sohn Jojadas, Befehlshaber des Heeres, Sadok aber und Abiathar Priester.

Azarias, der Sohn Nathans, war über die gesetzt, welche den König umgaben; Zabud, der Sohn Nathans, Priester, Vertrauter des Königs;

Ahisar war Vorsteher des Hauses, Adoniram, der Sohn Abdas, über die Abgaben gesetzt.

Salomon aber hatte zwölf Vorsteher über ganz Israel gesetzt, die den König und sein Haus mit Nahrung versahen, denn ein jeder hatte je einen Monat in Jahre, in dem er das Nötige lieferte.

Dies sind ihre Namen: Benhur auf dem Gebirge Ephraim,

Bendekar in Macces und in Salebim, Bethsames, Elon und Bethanan,

Benhesed in Aruboth; unter ihm stand Socho, und das ganze Gebiet Epher;

Benabinadab über ganz Nephathdor, er hatte Tapheth, die Tochter Salomons, zur Frau.

Bana, der Sohn Ahiluds, über Thanak und Mageddo und ganz Bethsan, welches neben Sarthana, unterhalb Jezrahel, liegt, von Bethsan bis Abelmehula, Jekmaan gegenüber;

Bengaber in Ramoth-Galaad; unter ihm stand Avothiair, des Sohnes Manasses in Galaad; er verwaltete auch die ganze Umgebung von Argob, welche in Basan liegt, sechzig große und ummauerte Städte mit ehernen Riegeln.

Ahinadab, der Sohn Addos, war über Manaim gesetzt;

Achimaas über Nephthali, auch dieser hatte eine Tochter Salomons, Basemath, zur Frau;

Baana, der Sohn Husis, in Aser und Baloth,

Josaphat, der Sohn Pharues, in Issachar,

Semei, der Sohn Elas, in Benjamin.

Gaber, der Sohn Uris, im Lande Galaad, im Lande Sehons, des Königs der Amorrhiter, und Ogs, des Königs von Basan, über alles, was in diesem Lande war.

Wohlstand und Weisheit in Salomos Regierungszeit

Juda und Israel aber waren unzählbar wie der Sand des Meeres an Menge, sie aßen und tranken und waren fröhlich.

Und Salomon übte seine Herrschaft aus über alle Reiche vom Flusse des Landes der Philister an bis zur Grenze Ägyptens, sie brachten ihm Geschenke und waren ihm alle Tage seines Lebens unterworfen.

Salomons Unterhalt aber belief sich für jeden Tag auf dreißig Kor feines Mehl und sechzig Kor gewöhnliches Mehl,

zehn Mastrinder, zwanzig Weiderinder und hundert Widder, umgerechnet das Wildbret, Hirsche, Rehe, Büffel und gemästete Vögel.

Denn er herrschte über das ganze Land, welches jenseits des Flusses war, von Thaphsa bis nach Gaza, und über alle Könige jener Gegenden, und er hatte Frieden auf allen Seiten ringsum.

Und Juda und Israel wohnte ohne alle Furcht, ein jeder unter seinem Weinstocke und unter seinem Feigenbaume, von Dan bis Bersabee, alle Tage Salomons hindurch.

Auch hatte Salomon vierzigtausend Krippen für Wagenpferde und zwölftausend für Reitpferde.

Diese versorgten die obenerwähnten Vorsteher des Königs, aber auch den Bedarf zum Tische des Königs Salomon lieferten sie mit großer Sorgfalt zu seiner Zeit.

Auch die Gerste und das Stroh für die Pferde und die Zugtiere brachten sie stets an den Ort, wo der König war, wie es ihnen aufgetragen war.

Auch verlieh Gott Salomon Weisheit und überaus große Klugheit und Weite des Herzens, gleich dem Sande, der am Ufer des Meeres ist.

So übertraf Salomons Weisheit die Weisheit aller Morgenländer und aller Ägypter

und er war weiser als alle Menschen, weiser als Ethan, der Ezrahiter, und als Heman, und Chalkol, und Dorda, die Söhne Mahols, und er war berühmt unter allen Völkern ringsum.

Auch redete Salomon dreitausend Sprüche und seiner Lieder waren tausend und fünf.

Und er sprach über die Bäume von der Ceder an, die auf dem Libanon ist, bis zum Ysop, der an der Wand herauswächst. Und er redete über das Vieh und über die Vögel und über das Gewürm und über die Fische.

Auch kamen Leute aus allen Völkern, die Weisheit Salomons zu hören, und von allen Königen der Erde her, welche von seiner Weisheit hörten.
