- Kapitel 26 -

The fool and his folly

1
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
2
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
3
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.
4
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.(a)

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.(b)

The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.(c)
8
As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.(d)
9
As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
10
The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.(e)

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.(f)

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

The lazy and the lying tongue

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.(g)

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
17
He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.(h)

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,(i)

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.(j) (k) (l)

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.(m)

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;(n)
25
When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.(o)
26
Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.(p)
27
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28
A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Der Narr und seine Torheit

Wie Schnee im Sommer und wie Regen in der Ernte, so unpassend ist für den Toren Ehre.

Wie der Vogel hierhin und dorthin fliegt und der Sperling nach seinem Gefallen herumflattert, so trifft niemanden ein ohne Ursache ausgesprochener Fluch.

Die Geißel gebührt dem Pferde, der Zaum dem Esel und die Rute dem Rücken der Toren.

Antworte dem Toren nicht nach seiner Torheit, damit du ihm nicht gleich werdest.

Antworte dem Toren nach seiner Torheit, damit er sich nicht weise dünke.

Lahm an Füßen ist und Unrecht schluckt, wer seine Aufträge durch einen törichten Boten sendet.

So wie der Lahme vergeblich schöne Beine hat, ja so wenig steht ein weiser Spruch dem Munde der Toren an.

Wie der, welcher einen Stein auf Merkurs Steinhaufen wirft, so ist derjenige, der einem Toren Ehre erweist.

Wie ein Dorn, der in der Hand des Trunkenen aufschießt, so ist ein weiser Spruch im Munde der Toren.

Ein Rechtsspruch entscheidet Streithändel und wer einem Toren Stillschweigen auferlegt, besänftigt Erbitterung.

Wie ein Hund, der zu dem, was er gespieen, zurückkehrt, so ist der Tor, der seine Torheit wiederholt.

Siehst du einen Menschen, der sich für weise hält? Für einen Toren ist mehr Hoffnung als für ihn!

Die faule und die lügende Zunge

Der Faule spricht: Ein Löwe ist auf dem Wege, eine Löwin auf den Straßen!

Wie die Tür sich in ihren Angeln dreht, so der Faule auf seinem Bette.

Der Faule verbirgt die Hand unter seiner Achsel und es kostet ihm Mühe, sie an seinen Mund zu bringen.

Der Faule dünkt sich weiser als sieben Männer, die Sprüche reden.

Wie einer, der einen Hund bei den Ohren packt, so ist der, der unbeteiligt an Zankenden vorübergeht und sich in ihren Zank einmischt.

Wie der Schaden bringt, der todbringende Pfeile und Spieße entsendet,

so ist der Mann, der tückisch seinem Nächsten schadet und, wenn er ertappt wird, spricht: Ich habe es im Scherz getan!

Wenn kein Holz mehr da ist, erlischt das Feuer; so haben, ist der Ohrenbläser entfernt, die Zänkereien ein Ende.

Wie Kohlen zur Glut und Holz zum Feuer gehören, so schürt ein zorniger Mensch Streit an.

Die Worte des Ohrenbläsers scheinen arglos, aber sie dringen bis ins tiefste Innere.

Wie ein irdenes Gefäß, das man mit Silberschaum zieren wollte, sind aufgeblasene Lippen, vereint mit einem bösen Herzen.

Den Feind erkennt man an seinen Lippen, wenn er in seinem Herzen mit Trug umgeht.

Redet er auch demütig, so traue ihm doch nicht, denn siebenfache Bosheit ist in seinem Herzen.

Wer den Hass listig verbirgt, dessen Bosheit wird in der Versammlung aufgedeckt werden.

Wer eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst in dieselbe; und wer einen Stein wälzt, auf den rollt er zurück.

Eine trügerische Zunge liebt die Wahrheit nicht und ein glatter Mund richtet Verderben an.
