- Kapitel 9 -

Then Abimelech the sonne of Ierubbaal went to Shechem vnto his mothers brethren, and communed with them, and with all the familie, and house of his mothers father, saying,

Say, I pray you, in the audience of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sonnes of Ierubbaal, which are seuentie persons, reigne ouer you, either that one reigne ouer you? Remember also, that I am your bone, and your flesh.

Then his mothers brethren spake of him in the audience of all the men of Shechem, all these wordes: and their hearts were moued to follow Abimelech: for sayd they, He is our brother.

And they gaue him seuentie pieces of siluer out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vayne and light fellowes which followed him.

And he went vnto his fathers house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren, the sonnes of Ierubbaal, about seuentie persons vpon one stone: yet Iotham the yongest sonne of Ierubbaal was left: for he hid himselfe.

And all the men of Shechem gathered together with all the house of Millo, and came and made Abimelech King in the playne, where the stone was erected in Shechem.

Jotham’s Parable

And when they told it to Iotham, he went and stoode in the top of mount Gerizim, and lift vp his voyce, and cryed, and sayd vnto them, Hearken vnto mee, you men of Shechem, that God may hearken vnto you.

The trees went foorth to anoynt a King ouer them, and sayde vnto the oliue tree, Reigne thou ouer vs.

But the oliue tree said vnto them, Should I leaue my fatnes, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to aduance me aboue ye trees?

Then the trees sayde to the fig tree, Come thou, and be King ouer vs.

But the fig tree answered them, Should I forsake my sweetenesse, and my good fruite, and goe to aduance me aboue the trees?

Then sayd the trees vnto the Vine, Come thou, and be king ouer vs.

But the Vine sayde vnto them, Should I leaue my wine, whereby I cheare God and man, and goe to aduance me aboue the trees?

Then said all the trees vnto the bramble, Come thou, and reigne ouer vs.

And the bramble said vnto the trees, If ye will in deede anoynt me King ouer you, come, and put your trust vnder my shadowe: and if not, the fire shall come out of the bramble, and consume the Cedars of Lebanon.

Now therefore, if ye doe truely and vncorruptly to make Abimelech King, and if ye haue delt well with Ierubbaal and with his house, and haue done vnto him according to the deseruing of his handes,

(For my father fought for you, and aduentured his life, and deliuered you out of the handes of Midian.

And yee are risen vp against my fathers house this day, and haue slayne his children, about seuentie persons vpon one stone, and haue made Abimelech the sonne of his mayde seruant, King ouer the men of Shechem, because hee is your brother)

If ye then haue delt truely and purely with Ierubbaal, and with his house this day, then reioyce with you.

But if not, let a fire come out from Abimelech, and consume the men of Shechem and the house of Millo: also let a fire come foorth from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and consume Abimelech.

And Iotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there for feare of Abimelech his brother.

Gaal Conspires with the Shechemites

So Abimelech reigned three yeere ouer Israel.

But God sent an euil spirit betweene Abimelech, and the men of Shechem: and the men of Shechem brake their promise to Abimelech,

That the crueltie toward the seuentie sonnes of Ierubbaal and their blood might come and be laide vpon Abimelech their brother, which had slayne them, and vpon the men of Shechem, which had ayded him to kill his brethren.

So the men of Shechem set men in wayte for him in the toppes of the mountaines: who robbed all that passed that way by them: and it was tolde Abimelech.

Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed came with his brethren, and they went to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

Therefore they went out into the field, and gathered in their grapes and troade them, and made merie, and went into the house of their gods, and did eate and drinke, and cursed Abimelech.

Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed sayde, Who is Abimelech? and who is Shechem, that wee should serue him? Is he not the sonne of Ierubbaal? and Zebul is his officer? Serue rather the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serue him?

Now would God this people were vnder mine hand: then would I put away Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

The Fall of Shechem

And when Zebul the ruler of the citie heard the wordes of Gaal the sonne of Ebed, his wrath was kindled.

Therefore he sent messengers vnto Abimelech priuily, saying, Beholde, Gaal the sonne of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem, and beholde, they fortifie the citie against thee.

Now therefore arise by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lye in wayte in the fielde.

And rise early in the morning as soone as the sunne is vp, and assault the citie: and when he and the people that is with him, shall come out against thee, doe to him what thou canst.

So Abimelech rose vp, and all the people that were with him by night: and they lay in wayte against Shechem in foure bandes.

Then Gaal the sonne of Ebed went out and stood in the entring of the gate of the citie: and Abimelech rose vp, and the folke that were with him, from lying in waite.

And when Gaal sawe the people, he said to Zebul, Beholde, there come people downe from the tops of the mountaines: and Zebul said vnto him, The shadowe of the mountaines seeme men vnto thee.

And Gaal spake againe, and said, See, there come folke downe by the middle of the land, and another bande commeth by the way of the plaine of Meonenim.

Then sayd Zebul vnto him, Where is now thy mouth, that said, Who is Abimelech, that we should serue him? Is not this the people that thou hast despised? Go out now, I pray thee, and fight with them.

And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

But Abimelech pursued him, and he fledde before him, and many were ouerthrowen and wounded, euen vnto the entring of the gate.

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren that they should not dwell in Shechem.

And on the morowe, the people went out into the fielde: which was tolde Abimelech.

And he tooke the people, and deuided them into three bandes, and layde wayte in the fieldes, and looked, and beholde, the people were come out of the citie, and he rose vp against them, and smote them.

And Abimelech, and the bandes that were with him, russhed forwarde, and stoode in the entring of the gate of the citie: and the two other bandes ran vpon all the people that were in the fielde and slewe them.

And when Abimelech had fought against the citie all that day, he tooke the citie, and slewe the people that was therein, and destroyed the citie and sowed salt in it.

And when all the men of the towre of Shechem heard it, they entred into an holde of the house of the god Berith.

And it was tolde Abimelech, that all the men of the towre of Shechem were gathered together.

And Abimelech gate him vp to mounte Zalmon, hee and all the people that were with him: and Abimelech tooke axes with him, and cut downe boughes of trees, and tooke them, and bare them on his shoulder, and sayde vnto the folke that were with him, What ye haue seene me doe, make haste, and doe like me.

Then all the people also cut downe euery man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the holde, and set the holde on fire with them: so all the men of the towre of Shechem dyed also, about a thousand men and women.

Abimelech’s Punishment

Then went Abimelech to Tebez, and besieged Tebez, and tooke it.

But there was a strong towre within the citie, and thither fledde all the men and women, and all the chiefe of the citie, and shut it to them, and went vp to the toppe of the towre.

And Abimelech came vnto the towre and fought against it, and went hard vnto the doore of the towre to set it on fire.

But a certaine woman cast a piece of a milstone vpon Abimelechs head, and brake his braine pan.

Then Abimelech called hastily his page that bare his harneis, and sayde vnto him, Drawe thy sworde and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slewe him. And his page thrust him thorowe, and he dyed.

And when the men of Israel sawe that Abimelech was dead, they departed euery man vnto his owne place.

Thus God rendred the wickednes of Abimelech, which he did vnto his father, in slaying his seuentie brethren.

Also all the wickednes of the men of Shechem did God bring vpon their heads. So vpon them came the curse of Iotham the sonne of Ierubbaal.

Die Verschwörung des Abimelech

Abimelech nämlich, der Sohn Jerobaals, begab sich nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter und redete mit ihnen und mit der ganzen Verwandtschaft des Vaterhauses seiner Mutter und sprach:

Saget zu allen Männern von Sichem: Was ist besser für euch, das siebzig Männer, alle Söhne Jerobaals, über euch herrschen, oder dass ein Mann herrsche? Dazu bedenket auch, dass ich euer Fleisch und Bein bin.

Als nun die Brüder seiner Mutter alle diese Worte in seinem Namen vor allen Männern von Sichem wiederholten, gewannen sie ihr Herz für Abimelech, indem sie sprachen: Er ist unser Bruder!

Und sie gaben ihm siebzig Pfund Silber aus dem Tempel Baalberiths. Da dingte er sich damit besitzlose und unstäte Leute, die sich ihm anschlossen,

und kam nach Ephra in das Haus seines Vaters und ermordete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerobaals, siebzig Männer, auf einem Steine; nur Joatham, der jüngste Sohn Jerobaals, blieb übrig, da er sich versteckt hatte.

Darauf versammelten sich alle Männer von Sichem und alle Familien der Stadt Mello und gingen hin und machten Abimelech zum Könige bei der Eiche, welche bei Sichem stand.

Das Gleichnis von den Bäumen

Als Joatham hiervon Kunde erhielt, ging er hin und stellte sich auf den Gipfel des Berges Garizim und erhob seine Stimme und rief und sprach: Höret mich, ihr Männer von Sichem, wie auch Gott euch hören möge!

Die Bäume gingen hin, um einen König über sich zu salben, und sprachen zu dem Ölbaume: Herrsche über uns!

Er antwortete: Könnte ich etwa meine Fettigkeit aufgeben, die Gott und den Menschen dient, und sollte kommen, um mich über die Bäume erhaben zu lassen?

Da sprachen die Bäume zu dem Feigenbaume: komm und nimm die Herrschaft über uns an!

Er antwortete ihnen: Könnte ich etwa meine Süßigkeit und meine so köstlichen Früchte aufgeben und hingehen, um mich über die übrigen Bäume erheben zu lassen?

Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstocke: Komm und herrsche über uns!

Er antwortete ihnen: Könnte ich etwa meinen Wein im Stich lassen, welcher Gott und Menschen erfreut, um mich über die übrigen Bäume erheben zu lassen?

Da sprachen alle Bäume zu dem Dornbusche: Komm und herrsche über uns!

Dieser antwortete ihnen: Wollt ihr mich in Wahrheit zu euerm Könige machen, so kommet und ruhet in meinem Schatten; wollt ihr dies aber nicht, so gehe Feuer vom Dornbusche aus und verschlinge die Zedern des Libanon!

Nun also, wenn ihr Abimelech mit Recht und ohne Sünde zu eurem Könige gemacht habt und an Jerobaal und seinem ganzen Hause recht gehandelt und ihm seine Wohltaten vergolten habt, der für euch gekämpft

und sein Leben der Gefahr ausgesetzt hat, um euch aus der Hand Madians zu retten,

indem ihr euch jetzt gegen das Haus meines Vaters erhoben und seine siebzig Söhne auf einem Steine ermordet, und Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Magd, zum Könige über die Bewohner von Sichem gesetzt habt, weil er euer Bruder ist:

wenn ihr also recht und ohne Sünde an Jerobaal und seinem Hause gehandelt habt, so freuet euch heute Abimelechs und er freue sich euer!

Habt ihr aber Unrecht getan, so gehe Feuer von ihm aus und verzehre die Einwohner von Sichem und die Stadt Mello; und es gehe Feuer aus von den Männern Sichems und von der Stadt Mello und verzehre Abimelech!

Als er so gesprochen, floh er und begab sich nach Bera und wohnte dort aus Furcht vor seinem Bruder Abimelech.

Der Untergang Abimelechs

Abimelech also herrschte drei Jahre über Israel.

Und der Herr sandte einen bösen Geist zwischen Abimelech und die Einwohner von Sichem, so dass sie anfingen, ihn zu verwünschen

und die Mordtat an den siebzig Söhnen Jerobaals und die an ihnen begangene Bluttat auf Abimelech, deren Bruder, und auf die übrigen Fürsten Sichems, die ihm geholfen, zu wälzen.

Deshalb stellten sie sich gegen ihn auf den Höhen der Berge auf; und während sie seiner Ankunft harrten, übten sie Räubereien aus und beraubten die Vorüberziehenden; dies ward Abimelech berichtet.

Es kam aber Gaal, der Sohn Obeds, mit seinen Brüdern und zog nach Sichem; bei seiner Ankunft wuchs den Einwohnern Sichems der Mut,

und sie zogen auf die Äcker hinaus und hielten in den Weinbergen Lese und kelterten die Trauben und hielten Tanz und Sang, zogen in den Tempel ihres Götzen und aßen und tranken und fluchten dabei dem Abimelech.

Und Gaal, der Sohn Obeds, rief: Wer ist Abimelech, und was ist Sichem, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist er nicht Jerobaals Sohn und hat Zebul, seinen Diener, über die Männer Emors, des Stammvaters von Sichem, zum Fürsten gesetzt? Warum sollen wir ihm also dienen?

Gäbe doch jemand dieses Volk unter meine Hand, um Abimelech aus dem Wege zu schaffen. Da wurde Abimelech gesagt: Ziehe ein starkes Heer zusammen und komm!

Denn Zebul, als Oberhaupt der Stadt, geriet, als er die Rede Gaals, des Sohnes Obeds, hörte, in gewaltigen Zorn

und sandte heimlich Boten an Abimelech und ließ ihm sagen: Siehe, Gaal, der Sohn Obeds, ist mit seinen Brüdern nach Sichem gekommen und reizt die Stadt wider sich auf.

Mache dich also bei der Nacht mit dem Volke, das bei dir ist, auf und halte dich im Felde verborgen;

am frühen Morgen aber bei Sonnenaufgang überfalle die Stadt. Wenn er dann mit seinem Heere gegen dich ausfällt, so tue ihm, was du kannst.

Da machte sich Abimelech des Nachts mit seinem ganzen Heere auf und stellte sich bei Sichem an vier Orten auf.

Als nun Gaal, der Sohn Obeds, herauszog und am Tore der Stadt stehen blieb, brach Abimelech und sein ganzes Heer mit ihm aus seiner verdeckten Stellung hervor.

Da sah Gaal das Heer und sprach zu Zebul: Siehe, da kommt eine Menschenmenge von den Bergen herab! Dieser antwortete ihm: Die Schatten der Berge stehst du für Menschen an; und so irrst du dich und wirst getäuscht.

Gaal sprach wiederum: Siehe, da kommt eine Schar vom höchsten Punkte des Landes herab, und ein anderer Heerhaufe kommt auf dem Wege, der zur Eiche führt.

Da sprach Zebul zu ihm: Wo ist nun dein Maul, mit dem du sprachest: Wer ist Abimelech, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist dies nicht das Volk, das du verachtetest? Ziehe nun aus und kämpfe mit ihm!

Da zog Gaal hinaus, während das Volk von Sichem zuschaute, und kämpfte gegen Abimelech;

doch er musste fliehen, und Abimelech setzte ihm nach und drängte ihn in die Stadt zurück, und es fielen auf seiner Seite sehr viele bis vor das Stadttor.

Und Abimelech blieb in Ruma; Zebul aber vertrieb Gaal und dessen Genossen aus der Stadt und ließ sie nicht darin wohnen bleiben.

So ging das Volk am andern Tage auf das Feld hinaus. Als dies Abimelech gemeldet wurde,

sammelte er sein Heer und teilte es in drei Haufen und stellte sie auf dem Felde auf. Als er sah, dass das Volk aus der Stadt herauskam, erhob er sich, fiel über sie her

mit seinem Haufen, griff die Stadt an und schloss sie ein, während die beiden andern Haufen das Feld durchstreiften und die Feinde verfolgten.

Und Abimelech bestürmte die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag lang, alsdann nahm er sie ein, tötete ihre Einwohner und zerstörte die Stadt, so dass er Salz darauf streute.

Als dies die Leute, welche in der Burg von Sichem wohnten, hörten, begaben sie sich in den Tempel ihres Gottes Berith, wo sie ihren Bund mit ihm geschlossen hatten, und von welchem der Ort, der sehr fest war, seinen Namen erhalten hatte.

Da Abimelech vernahm, dass die Männer von Sichem sich in der Burg zusammengeschart hatten,

zog er mit seinem gesamten Volke auf den Berg Selmon; ergriff ein Beil, hieb einen Baumast ab, hob ihn auf, legte ihn auf seine Schulter und sprach zu seinen Genossen: Was ihr mich tun sehet, das tuet eilig auch!

Da hieben sie wetteifernd Äste von den Bäumen und folgten ihrem Führer. Und sie lagerten sich um die Feste und zündeten sie an; und so geschah es, dass durch das Feuer und den Rauch tausend Menschen von den Bewohnern der Burg zu Sichem getötet wurden, Männer wie Frauen.

Von da zog Abimelech weiter und kam zu der Stadt Thebes, welche er einschloss und mit seinem Heere belagerte.

Nun aber mitten in der Stadt ein hoher Turm; dorthin waren Männer und Frauen und alle Angesehenen der Stadt geflüchtet und hatten das Tor fest verschlossen und standen auf dem Dache des Turmes hinter der Brustwehr.

Da rückte Abimelech bis an den Turm heran und kämpfte tapfer; als er aber an das Tor herantrat und Feuer daran zu legen suchte,

siehe, da warf eine Frau ein Stück von einem Mühlstein herunter und traf damit Abimelechs Haupt und zerschmetterte ihm die Hirnschale.

Da rief er eilends seinem Waffenträger und sprach zu ihm: Ziehe dein Schwert und töte mich, damit man nicht etwa sage, ich sei von einem Weibe getötet worden! Dieser tat, wie ihm befohlen war, und tötete ihn.

Als er nun tot war, kehrten alle Israeliten, die bei ihm waren, in ihre Heimat zurück.

So vergalt Gott das Böse, das Abimelech an seinem Vater begangen, indem er seine siebzig Brüder tötete.

Und auch den Sichemiten wurde vergolten, was sie getan, und der Fluch Joathams, des Sohnes Jerobaals, kam über sie.
