- Kapitel 8 -

Then the men of Ephraim sayde vnto him, Why hast thou serued vs thus that thou calledst vs not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? and they chode with him sharply.

To whom he said, What haue I now done in comparison of you? is not the gleaning of grapes of Ephraim better, then the vintage of Abiezer?

God hath deliuered into your handes the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? and when he had thus spoken, then their spirits abated toward him.

And Gideon came to Iorden to passe ouer, hee, and the three hundreth men that were with him, weary, yet pursuing them.

And he said vnto the men of Succoth, Giue, I pray you, morsels of bread vnto the people that follow me (for they be wearie) that I may follow after Zebah, and Zalmunna Kings of Midian.

And the princes of Succoth sayde, Are the handes of Zebah and Zalmunna nowe in thine hads, that we should giue bread vnto thine army?

Gideon then sayde, Therefore when the Lord hath deliuered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, I will teare your flesh with thornes of the wildernes and with breers.

And he went vp thence to Penuel, and spake vnto them likewise, and the men of Penuel answered him, as the men of Succoth answered.

And he sayd also vnto the men of Penuel, When I come againe in peace, I will breake downe this towre.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hostes with them, about fifteene thousande, all that were left of all the hostes of them of the East: for there was slaine an hundreth and twentie thousand men, that drew swordes.

And Gideon went through them that dwelt in Tabernacles on the East side of Nobah and Iogbehah, and smote the hoste: for the hoste was carelesse.

And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, hee followed after them, and tooke the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the hoste.

So Gideon the sonne of Ioash returned from battel, the sunne being yet hie,

And tooke a seruant of the me of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he wrote to him the princes of Succoth and the Elders thereof, euen seuentie and seuen men.

And he came vnto the men of Succoth, and sayd, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, by whome ye vpbrayded me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in thine hands, that we should giue bread vnto thy weary men?

Then he tooke the Elders of the citie, and thornes of the wildernes and breers, and did teare the men of Succoth with them.

Also he brake downe the towre of Penuel, and slew the men of the citie.

Then saide he vnto Zebah and Zalmunna, What maner of men were they, whom ye slew at Tabor? and they answered, As thou art, so were they: euery one was like the children of a King.

And he said, They were my brethren, euen my mothers children: as the Lord liueth, if ye had saued their liues, I would not slay you.

Then he sayde vnto Iether his first borne sonne, Vp, and slay them: but the boy drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet yong.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna sayd, Rise thou, and fall vpon vs: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and tooke away the ornamentes, that were on their camels neckes.

Gideon’s Ephod

Then the men of Israel sayd vnto Gideon, Reigne thou ouer vs, both thou, and thy sonne, and thy sonnes sonne: for thou hast deliuered vs out of the hand of Midian.

And Gideon sayde vnto them, I will not reigne ouer you, neither shall my childe reigne ouer you, but the Lord shall reigne ouer you.

Againe Gideon sayd vnto them, I would desire a request of you, that you would giue mee euery man the earings of his pray (for they had golden earings because they were Ismaelites)

And they answered, Wee will giue them. And they spred a garment, and did cast therein euery man the earings of his pray.

And the weight of the golden earings that he required, was a thousande and seuen hundreth shekels of golde, beside collers and iewels, and purple rayment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the cheynes that were about their camels neckes.

And Gideon made an Ephod thereof, and put it in Ophrah his citie: and all Israel went a whoring there after it, which was the destruction of Gideon and his house.

Forty Years of Peace

Thus was Midian brought lowe before the children of Israel, so that they lift vp their heads no more: and the countrey was in quietnes fourtie yeeres in the dayes of Gideon.

Then Ierubbaal the sonne of Ioash went, and dwelt in his owne house.

And Gideon had seuentie sonnes begotten of his body: for he had many wiues.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, bare him a sonne also, whose name he called Abimelech.

Gideon’s Death

So Gideon the sonne of Ioash dyed in a good age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Ioash his father in Ophrah, of the father of ye Ezrites.

But when Gideon was dead, the children of Israel turned away and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their God.

And the children of Israel remembred not the Lord their God, which had deliuered the out of the hands of all their enemies on euery side.

Neither shewed they mercy on the house of Ierubbaal, or Gideon, according to al the goodnesse which he had shewed vnto Israel.

Gideon unterwirft die Midianiter

Und es sprachen die Männer von Ephraim zu ihm: Was hast du uns da angetan, dass du uns nicht gerufen hast, als du in den Kampf gegen Madian zogst? Und sie zankten heftig und wurden fast gewalttätig.

Er antwortete ihnen: Was konnte ich wohl derartiges tun, wie ihr getan habt? Ist nicht ein Rebzweig Ephraims besser als die ganze Weinlese Abiezers?

In eure Hand hat der Herr die Fürsten von Madian, Oreb und Zeb, gegeben; was konnte ich derartiges tun, wie ihr getan habt? Als er so redete, besänftigte sich ihr Zorn, der sie gegen ihn erfüllte.

Als nun Gedeon an den Jordan kam, zog er mit den dreihundert Mann, die bei ihm waren, hinüber; und vor Erschöpfung vermochten sie die Fliehenden nicht zu verfolgen.

Da sprach er zu den Männern von Sokkoth: gebet, ich bitte, dem Volke, das bei mir ist, Brot, denn sie sind sehr ermattet; damit wir Zebee und Salmana, die Könige von Madian, verfolgen können.

Die Fürsten von Sokkoth aber antworteten: Sind die Hände Zebees und Salmanas denn schon in deiner Hand, dass du von uns forderst, wir sollen deinem Heer Brot geben?

Er sprach zu ihnen: Wohlan, wenn der Herr Zebee und Salmana in meine Hände gibt, werde ich euer Fleisch mit den Dornen und Disteln der Wüste zergeißeln.

Von da zog er weiter nach Phanuel hinauf und redete zu den Männern dieses Ortes in gleicher Weise. Aber auch sie antworteten ihm, wie die Männer von Sokkoth geantwortet hatten.

Da sprach er auch zu ihnen: Wenn ich in Frieden als Sieger zurückkomme, so werde ich diesen Turm zerstören.

Zebee und Salmana aber rasteten mit ihrem ganzen Heere; denn fünfzehntausend Mann waren von allen Scharen der Völker aus dem Osten übriggeblieben, hundertzwanzigtausend Krieger hingegen, die das Schwert führten, waren erschlagen worden.

Da zog Gedeon auf dem Wege der Zeltbewohner heran, östlich von Nobe und Jegbaa und schlug das Lager der Feinde, die sich sicher wähnten und nichts Widriges ahnten.

Und Zebee und Salmana flohen; doch Gedeon verfolgte sie und nahm sie gefangen und brachte ihr ganzes Heer in Verwirrung.

Als er nun aus dem Kampfe zurückkam, noch vor Aufgang der Sonne,

ergriff er einen Jüngling von den Leuten zu Sokkoth und fragte ihn nach den Namen der Fürsten und Ältesten zu Sokkoth und schrieb siebenundfünfzig Männer auf.

Dann kam er nach Sokkoth und sprach zu ihnen: Sehet da Zebee und Salmana, derenthalben ihr mich verspottet und gesagt habt: Sind denn die Hände Zebee und Salmanas schon in deiner Hand, dass du von uns forderst, wir sollen den Leuten, die müde und matt sind, Brot geben?

Da nahm er die Ältesten der Stadt und Wüstendornen und Disteln und zergeißelte und zerschlug damit die Männer von Sokkoth.

Auch den Turm Phanuel zerstörte er, nachdem er die Bewohner der Stadt erschlagen.

Und zu Zebee und Salmana sprach er: Was waren das für Männer, die ihr am Thabor erschlagen habt? Sie antworteten: Sie waren dir ähnlich, und ein jeder von ihnen wie eines Königs Sohn.

Er antwortete ihnen: Es waren meine Brüder, die Söhne meiner Mutter. So wahr der Herr lebt, hättet ihr sie am Leben gelassen, so würde ich euch nicht töten!

Sodann sprach er zu Jether, seinem Erstgeborenen: Auf, töte sie! Dieser aber zog das Schwert nicht; denn er fürchtete sich, weil er noch ein Knabe war.

Da sprachen Zebee und Salmana: Erhebe du dich und stürze dich auf uns; denn wie das Alter des Menschen, so ist seine Kraft. Und Gedeon erhob sich und tötete Zebee und Salmana; und er nahm die Zieraten und Gehänge, mit denen man die Hälfte der königlichen Kamele zu zieren pflegt.

Gideons Efod

Hierauf sprachen alle Männer Israels zu Gedeon: Herrsche über uns, du und dein Sohn und deines Sohnes Sohn; denn du hast uns aus der Hand Madians befreit.

Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich werde nicht über euch herrschen und auch mein Sohn soll nicht über euch herrschen, sondern der Herr soll über euch herrschen.

Und weiter sprach er zu ihnen: Eine Bitte stelle ich an euch: Gebet mir die Ohrgehänge von eurer Beute, denn die Ismaeliten pflegten goldene Ohrgehänge zu tragen.

Sie antworteten: Sehr gern wollen wir sie geben. Und sie breiteten einen Mantel auf die Erde und warfen die Ohrgehänge von der Beute darauf;

und das Gewicht der Ohrgehänge, die er gefordert hatte, betrug tausend und siebenhundert Sekel Goldes, nicht gerechnet die Zieraten und die Halsgehänge und das Purpurkleid, welches die Könige Madians zu tragen pflegten, und ungerechnet die goldenen Halsketten der Kamele.

Gedeon ließ daraus ein Ephod machen und stellte es in seiner Stadt Ephra auf. Und ganz Israel trieb damit Abgötterei, und es ward für Gedeon und sein ganzes Land zum Falle.

Die Madianiter aber waren von den Söhnen Israels gebeugt und konnten fortan ihr Haupt nicht mehr erheben; sondern das Land hatte vierzig Jahre lang Ruhe, solange Gedeon an der Spitze stand.

Gideons Tod

Jerobaal, der Sohn Joas, ging nun hin und wohnte in seinem Hause.

Und er hatte siebzig Söhne, die aus seinem Lenden entsprossen waren; denn er hatte mehrere Frauen.

Seine Nebenfrau, die er in Sichem hatte, gebar ihm gleichfalls einen Sohn, namens Abimelech.

Endlich starb Gedeon, der Sohn Joas, in hohem Alter und ward im Grabe Joas, seines Vaters, der aus der Familie Ezri war, zu Ephra begraben.

nachdem aber Gedeon gestorben war, wandten sich die Söhne Israels ab und trieben Abgötterei mit den Baalen. Und sie schlossen mit Baal einen Bund, dass er ihr Gott sein solle,

und gedachten des Herrn, ihres Gottes, nicht, der sie aus der Hand aller ihrer Feinde ringsum befreit hatte,

und erwiesen dem Hause Jerobaal Gedeons keine Liebe für alles Gute, das er Israel getan hatte.
