- Kapitel 123 -

I lift up my eyes to you

A Canticle in steps. I have lifted up my eyes to you, who dwells in the heavens.

Behold, as the eyes of the servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the handmaid are on the hands of her mistress, so our eyes are upon the Lord our God, until he may be merciful to us.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us. For we have been filled with utter disdain.

For our soul has been greatly filled. We are the disgrace of those who have abundance and the disdain of the arrogant.

Ich erhebe meine Augen zu dir

Stufengesang. Zu dir erhebe ich meine Augen, der du im Himmel wohnst!

Siehe! wie die Augen der Knechte auf die Hände ihrer Herren, wie die Augen der Magd auf die Hände ihrer Gebieterin, so schauen unsere Augen auf den Herrn, unsern Gott, bis er sich unser erbarmt.

Erbarme dich unser, o Herr! erbarme dich unser; gar sehr sind wir gesättigt mit Verachtung.

Ja, reichlich sind unsere Seelen, zum Gespötte sind wir den Reichen und zur Verachtung den Stolzen.
