- Kapitel 23 -

(Luke 11:37–54)

Then Jesus spoke to the crowds, and to his disciples,

saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down in the chair of Moses.

Therefore, all things whatsoever that they shall say to you, observe and do. Yet truly, do not choose to act according to their works. For they say, but they do not do.

For they bind up heavy and unbearable burdens, and they impose them on men’s shoulders. But they are not willing to move them with even a finger of their own.

Truly, they do all their works so that they may be seen by men. For they enlarge their phylacteries and glorify their hems.(a)

And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues,

and greetings in the marketplace, and to be called Master by men.

But you must not be called Master. For One is your Master, and you are all brothers.

And do not choose to call anyone on earth your father. For One is your Father, who is in heaven.(b)

Neither should you be called teachers. For One is your Teacher, the Christ.(c)

Whoever is greater among you shall be your minister.

But whoever has exalted himself, shall be humbled. And whoever has humbled himself, shall be exalted.

So then: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you close the kingdom of heaven before men. For you yourselves do not enter, and those who are entering, you would not permit to enter.

Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you consume the houses of widows, praying long prayers. Because of this, you shall receive the greater judgment.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and by land, in order to make one convert. And when he has been converted, you make him twice the son of Hell that you are yourselves.

Woe to you, blind guides, who say: ‘Whoever will have sworn by the temple, it is nothing. But whoever will have sworn by the gold of the temple is obligated.’

You are foolish and blind! For which is greater: the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

And you say: ‘Whoever will have sworn by the altar, it is nothing. But whoever will have sworn by the gift that is on the altar is obligated.’

How blind you are! For which is greater: the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all that is on it.

And whoever will have sworn by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it.

And whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits upon it.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you collect tithes on mint and dill and cumin, but you have abandoned the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, while not omitting the others.

You blind guides, straining out a gnat, while swallowing a camel!

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you clean what is outside the cup and the dish, but on the inside you are full of avarice and impurity.

You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, and then what is outside becomes clean.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed sepulchers, which outwardly appear brilliant to men, yet truly, inside, they are filled with the bones of the dead and with all filth.

So also, you certainly appear to men outwardly to be just. But inwardly you are filled with hypocrisy and iniquity.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites, who build the sepulchers of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just.(d)

And then you say, ‘If we had been there in the days of our fathers, we would not have joined with them in the blood of the prophets.’

And so you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets.

Complete, then, the measure of your fathers.

You serpents, you brood of vipers! How will you escape from the judgment of Hell?

For this reason, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men, and scribes. And some of these you will put to death and crucify; and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,

so that upon you may fall all the blood of the just, which has been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.(e)

Amen I say to you, all these things shall fall upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

(Luke 13:31–35)

Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone those who have been sent to you. How often I have wanted to gather your children together, in the way that a hen gathers her young under her wings. But you were not willing!

Behold, your house shall be abandoned to you, having been deserted.

For I say to you, you shall not see me again, until you say: ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”

(b)23:9 Call none your father--Neither be ye called masters, etc:The meaning is that our Father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded, than any father upon earth: and no master to be followed, who would lead us away from Christ. Wehe den Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäern

(Lukas 11,37-54)

Dann redete Jesus zu dem Volke und zu seinen Jüngern,

und sprach: Auf den Stuhl des Moses haben sich die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer gesetzt.

Alles also, was sie immer euch sagen, haltet und tuet; nach ihren Werken aber tuet nicht; denn sie sagen, und tun nicht.

Sie binden nämlich schwere und unerträgliche Lasten und legen sie auf die Schultern der Menschen; mit ihrem Finger aber wollen sie dieselben nicht bewegen.

Alle ihre Werke aber tun sie, um von den Leuten gesehen zu werden; denn sie machen ihre Spruchbänder breit, und die Quasten groß.

Sie lieben die ersten Plätze bei den Gastmählern, und die ersten Stühle in den Synagogen.

Sie lassen sich gerne auf dem Markte grüßen und von den Leuten Rabbi nennen.

Ihr aber lasset euch nicht Rabbi nennen; denn einer ist euer Lehrer, ihr aber seid Brüder.

Auch nennet keinen auf Erden Vater; denn einer ist euer Vater, der im Himmel ist.

Und lasset euch nicht Meister nennen; weil einer euer Meister ist, Christus.

Wer der Größere unter euch ist, wird euer Diener sein.

Wer aber sich selbst erhöhet, wird erniedrigt werden; und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöhet werden.

Wehe aber euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Weil ihr das Himmelreich vor den Menschen verschließet. Denn ihr selbst gehet nicht hinein, und auch die hinein wollen, lasset ihr da nicht hineingehen.

Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Weil ihr die Häuser der Witwen verzehret, indem ihr lange Gebete sprechet; deshalb werdet ihr ein strengeres Gericht erfahren.

Wehe euch ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Weil ihr das Meer und das Festland durchziehet, um einen einzigen Bekehrten zu machen; und wenn er es geworden ist, so machet ihr ihn zum Kinde der Hölle, zweifach mehr als ihr.

Wehe euch, ihr blinden Führer! die ihr saget: Wenn jemand beim Tempel geschworen hat, das ist nichts; wer aber beim Golde des Tempels geschworen hat, ist verpflichtet.

Ihr Toren und Blinde! Was ist denn größer? Das Gold oder der Tempel, welcher das Gold heiligt?

Und wer da beim Altare geschworen hat, das ist nichts; wer aber geschworen hat bei der Gabe, welche auf demselben liegt, ist verpflichtet.

Ihr Blinde! Was ist denn größer? Die Gabe oder der Altar, welcher die Gabe heiligt?

Wer also bei dem Altare schwöret, schwöret bei demselben, und bei allem, was auf demselben ist.

Und wer bei dem Tempel schwört, schwört bei diesem, und bei dem, welcher in demselben seine Wohnung hat.

Und wer bei dem Himmel schwört, schwört bei dem Throne Gottes, und bei dem, der auf demselben sitzet.

Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Die ihr die Krausemünze, Fenchel und Kümmel verzehnet, aber was das Wichtigere des Gesetzes ist, die Gerechtigkeit, die Barmherzigkeit und die Treue habt fallen lassen. Dieses hättet ihr tun, und jenes nicht unterlassen sollen.

Ihr blinden Führer! Die ihr eine Mücke durchseihet, das Kamel aber verschlucket.

Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Weil ihr das Äußere des Bechers und der Schüssel reiniget, innen aber voll des Raubes und der Unlauterkeit seid.

Du blinder Pharisäer! Reinige zuerst das Innere des Bechers und der Schüssel, damit die Außenseite derselben rein werde.

Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Weil ihr übertünchten Gräbern gleichet, welche von außen her den Leuten zwar schön erscheinen, inwendig aber voll sind von Totengebeinen und jeglicher Unreinigkeit.

So erscheint auch ihr zwar von außen als Gerechte vor den Menschen, inwendig aber seid ihr voll Heuchelei und Schlechtigkeit.

Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Die ihr die Gräber der Propheten bauet, und die Denkmäler der Gerechten schmücket,

und sagt: Wenn wir in den Tagen unserer Väter gelebt hätten, so wären wir nicht ihre Mitschuldigen an dem Blute der Propheten gewesen.

So gebet ihr wider euch selbst Zeugnis, dass ihr Söhne derer seid, welche die Propheten gemordet haben.

So machet denn ihr nur das Maß eurer Väter voll!

Ihr Schlangen, Natterngezücht! wie werdet ihr dem Gerichte der Hölle entrinnen?

Darum sehet, ich sende zu euch Propheten, und Weise, und Schriftgelehrte; und ihr werdet einen Teil von ihnen töten und kreuzigen; und einen Teil werdet ihr geißeln in euren Synagogen, und von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen;

damit alles gerechte Blut, welches auf Erden vergossen ward, über euch komme, vom Blute Abels, des Gerechten, an bis zum Blute Zacharias, des Sohnes Barachias, den ihr zwischen dem Tempel und dem Altare gemordet habt.

Wahrlich, ich sage euch, dies alles wird über dieses Geschlecht kommen!

Jesus klagt über Jerusalem

(Lukas 13,31-35)

Jerusalem, Jerusalem! die du die Propheten mordest, und steinigest die, welche zu dir gesandt worden, wie oft wollte ich deine Kinder versammeln, wie eine Henne ihre Küchlein unter ihre Flügel sammelt, du aber hast nicht gewollt!

Sehet, euer Haus wird verödet gelassen werden!

Denn ich sage euch; Von nun an werdet ihr mich nicht mehr sehen, bis dass ihr sprechet: Hochgelobt sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn!
