- Kapitel 15 -

The Assyrians flee: the Hebrews pursue after them, and are enriched by their spoils.

And when the entire army had heard that Holofernes was beheaded, reason and resolution fled from them, and, being moved by trembling and fear alone, they thought only to flee to safety.

So then, no one spoke with his neighbor, but hanging their heads and leaving everything behind, they hurried to escape from the Hebrews, who, as they had heard, were advancing against them well-armed. And they fled through the ways of the fields and the paths of the hills.

And so, the sons of Israel, seeing them fleeing, pursued them. And they went down after them, sounding the trumpets and howling.

And, since the Assyrians were not united, they rushed headlong in their flight. But the sons of Israel, pursuing like one unit, struck down all they were able to find.

And so, Uzziah sent messengers through all the cities and regions of Israel.

And then, every region and every city sent their chosen young men with weapons after them, and they pursued them with the edge of the sword, until they passed through to the extremities of their borders.

But the remainder, who were in Bethulia, entered the camp of the Assyrians and took away the plunder that the Assyrians, in their flight, had left behind, and they were exceedingly burdened.

In truth, those who returned victorious to Bethulia brought with them everything that was theirs. So there was no numbering their cattle, and beasts, and everything they could carry, so much so that, from the least to the greatest, all were made rich by their spoils.(a)

But Joachim, the high priest, came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his elders to see Judith.

And when she had gone out to him, they all blessed her with one voice, saying: “You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you are the honor of our people.

For you have acted manfully, and your heart has been strengthened. For you loved chastity, and, after your husband, you have not known any other. Therefore, also the hand of the Lord has strengthened you, and, therefore, you will be blessed for all eternity.”(b)

And all the people said: “Amen. Amen.”

But all of thirty days were scarcely enough for the people of Israel to collect the spoils of the Assyrians.

But moreover, all of those things that were clearly the particular possessions of Holofernes they gave to Judith: with gold, and silver, and garments, and gems, and furniture. And these were all delivered to her by the people.

And all the people rejoiced, with the women, and the virgins, and the young men, playing on wind instruments and stringed instruments.

Die Assyrer fliehen; die Hebräer verfolgen sie und bereichern sich an ihrer Beute

Als nun das ganze Heer vernommen hatte, dass Holofernes enthauptet sei, wich Verstand und Rat von ihnen und von Zittern und Furcht getrieben, suchten sie ihr Heil in der Flucht,

derart, dass keiner mit dem andern redete, sondern alle gesenkten Hauptes und alles zurücklassend, eilten, den Hebräern zu entkommen, indem sie auf Feldwegen und auf Bergpfaden flohen, da sie hörten, dass jene bewaffnet gegen sie heranzögen.

Da also die Söhne Israels sie fliehen sahen, setzten sie ihnen nach. Sie zogen hinab, in die Trompeten stoßend und hinter ihnen herschreiend.

Und da die Assyrier nicht vereinigt blieben und in hastiger Flucht sich überstürzten, die Söhne Israels sie aber in geschlossenen Reihen verfolgten, so machten diese alle nieder, die sie erreichen konnten.

Auch sandte Ozias Boten in alle Städte und Landschaften Israels.

Jede Landschaft und jede Stadt sandte ihnen ihre auserlesene, bewaffnete junge Mannschaft nach, und diese verfolgten sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, bis sie an ihren äußersten Grenzen anlangten.

Die übrigen aber, welche in Bethulia zurückgeblieben waren, drangen in das Lager der Assyrier und holten die Beute, welche die fliehenden Assyrier zurückgelassen hatten, und gingen reich beladen heim.

Die wiederum, welche als Sieger nach Bethulia zurückkamen, nahmen alles mit sich fort, was jenen gehört hatte, so dass das kleine und große Vieh und alle ihre beweglichen Güter nicht zu zählen waren und alle, vom Kleinsten bis zum Größten, durch die denselben abgenommene Beute reich wurden.

Joakim aber, der Hohepriester, kam aus Jerusalem nach Bethulia mit allen seinen Priestern, um Judith zu sehen.

Als diese zu ihm hinauskam, priesen alle sie einstimmig und sprachen: Du bist der Ruhm Jerusalems, du die Wonne Israels, du der Preis unseres Volkes;

denn männlich hast du gehandelt und mutvoll ist dein Herz gewesen, weil du die Keuschheit liebtest und nach deinem Manne keinen anderen erkanntest. Darum hat auch die Hand des Herrn dich gestärkt und darum wirst du gesegnet sein in Ewigkeit!

Da sprach das ganze Volk: Es geschehe, es geschehe!

Kaum reichten dreißig Tage aus, dass das Volk Israel die Beute der Assyrier zusammenbrachte.

Alles aber, was sich als Eigentum des Holofernes erwies, gaben sie Judith, Gold, Silber, Kleider, Edelsteine und allerlei Geräte; alles wurde ihr vom Volke übergeben.

Und das ganze Volk, Frauen und Jungfrauen und Jünglinge freuten sich mit Zithern und Harfen.
