- Kapitel 16 -

Now Sarai, the wife of Abram, had not conceived children. But, having an Egyptian handmaid named Hagar,

she said to her husband: “Behold, the Lord has closed me, lest I give birth. Enter to my handmaid, so that perhaps I may receive sons of her at least.” And when he agreed to her supplication,

she took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, ten years after they began to live in the land of Canaan, and she gave her to her husband as a wife.(a)

And he entered to her. But when she saw that she had conceived, she despised her mistress.

And Sarai said to Abram: “You have acted unfairly against me. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, who, when she saw that she had conceived, held me in contempt. May the Lord judge between me and you.”

Abram responded to her by saying, “Behold, your handmaid is in your hand to treat as it pleases you.” And so, when Sarai afflicted her, she took flight.

And when the Angel of the Lord had found her, near the fountain of water in the wilderness, which is on the way to Shur in the desert,

he said to her: “Hagar, handmaid of Sarai, where have you come from? And where will you go?” And she answered, “I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.”(b)

And the Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and humble yourself under her hand.”

And again he said, “I will multiply your offspring continuously, and they will not be numbered because of their multitude.”(c)

But thereafter he said: “Behold, you have conceived, and you will give birth to a son. And you shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard your affliction.

He will be a wild man. His hand will be against all, and all hands will be against him. And he will pitch his tents away from the region of all his brothers.”

Then she called upon the name of the Lord who had spoken to her: “You are the God who has seen me.” For she said, “Certainly, here I have seen the back of the one who sees me.”(d)

Because of this, she called that well: ‘The well of the one who lives and who sees me.’ The same is between Kadesh and Bered.

And Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram, who called his name Ishmael.

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael for him.

(a)16:3 To wife:Plurality of wives, though contrary to the primitive institution of marriage, Gen. 2:24, was by divine dispensation allowed to the patriarchs: which allowance seems to have continued during the time of the law of Moses. Hagar und Ismael

Sarai nun, Abrams Weib, hatte keine Kinder geboren; da sie aber eine Magd, eine Ägypterin, Namens Agar, hatte,

sprach sie zu ihrem Manne: Siehe, der Herr hat mich verschlossen, dass ich nicht gebäre; gehe also zu meiner Magd ein, vielleicht erhalte ich doch aus ihr Kinder. Und da er ihrer Bitte nachgab,

nahm sie Agar, ihre ägyptische Magd, nachdem sie zehn Jahre im Lande Chanaan gewohnt hatten, und gab sie ihrem Manne zum Weibe.

Und er ging zu ihr ein. Als diese aber sah, dass sie empfangen hatte, verachtete sie ihre Gebieterin.

Da sprach Sarai zu Abram: Du handelst unrecht an mir; ich habe meine Magd in deinen Schoß gegeben, da sie nun aber sieht, dass sie empfangen hat, verachtet sie mich; der Herr richte zwischen mir und dir!

Abram aber antwortete ihr, und sprach: Siehe, deine Magd ist in deiner Gewalt, verfahre mit ihr, wie es dir gutdünkt. Da nun Sarai sie härter behandelte, ergriff sie die Flucht.

Da fand sie der Engel des Herrn in der Wüste, an der Wasserquelle, welche auf dem Berg nach Sur in der Wüste ist,

und sprach zu ihr: Agar, Magd Sarais! woher kommst du? und wohin gehst du? Sie antwortete: ich fliehe vor Sarai, meiner Gebieterin.

Und der Engel des Herrn sprach zu ihr: Kehre um zu deiner Gebieterin und demütige dich unter ihre Hand.

Und wiederum sprach er: Ich will deine Nachkommenschaft überaus zahlreich machen, dass sie vor Menge unzählbar wird.

Und hierauf sprach er: Siehe, du hast empfangen und wirst einen Sohn gebären; den sollst du Ismael nennen, weil der Herr auf deine Bedrängnis gehört hat.

Er wird ein wilder Mensch sein, seine Hand gegen alle, und aller Hand gegen ihn; und allen seinen Brüdern gegenüber wird er seine Zelte aufschlagen.

Da nannte sie den Namen des Herrn, der mit ihr geredet: Du Gott, der mich gesehen. Denn, sagte sie, fürwahr! hier habe ich dem nachgesehen, der mich sah.

Darum nannte man jenen Brunnen den Brunnen des Lebendigen und des mich Sehenden. Er ist zwischen Kades und Barad.

Und Agar gebar Abram einen Sohn, und dieser nannte seinen Namen Ismael.

Abram war sechsundachtzig Jahre alt, als Agar ihm Ismael gebar.
