- Kapitel 9 -

And he cried out in my ears with a loud voice, saying: “The visitations of the city have drawn near, and each one has equipment for killing in his hand.”

And behold, six men were approaching from the way of the upper gate, which looks to the north. And each one had equipment for killing in his hand. Also, one man in their midst was clothed with linen, and an instrument for writing was at his waist. And they entered and stood beside the bronze altar.

And the glory of the Lord of Israel was taken up, from the cherub upon which he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called out to the man who was clothed with linen and had an instrument for writing at his waist.

And the Lord said to him: “Cross through the middle of the city, in the center of Jerusalem, and seal a Tau upon the foreheads of the grieving men, who are mourning over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”(a)

And he said to the others, in my hearing: “Cross through the city after him, and strike! Your eye shall not be lenient, and you shall not take pity.

Kill, even to utter destruction, old men, young men, and virgins, little ones, and women. But all upon whom you see the Tau, you shall not kill. And begin from my sanctuary.” Therefore, they began with the men among the elders, who were before the face of the house.

And he said to them: “Defile the house, and fill its courts with the slain! Go forth!” And they went forth and struck down those who were in the city.

And when the slaughter was completed, I remained. And I fell upon my face, and crying out, I said: “Alas, alas, alas, O Lord God! Will you now destroy the entire remnant of Israel, by pouring out your fury upon Jerusalem?”

And he said to me: “The iniquity of the house of Israel, and of Judah, is vast and exceedingly great, and the land has been filled with blood, and the city has been filled with what is abhorrent. For they have said: ‘The Lord has forsaken the earth,’ and, ‘The Lord does not see.’(c)

Therefore, my eye will not be lenient, and I will not take pity. I will repay their own way upon their head.”

And behold, the man who was clothed with linen, who had a writing instrument at his back, responded a word, saying: “I have done just as you instructed me.”

Die Bösen werden erschlagen

Dann rief er vor meinen Ohren mit lauter Stimme also: Es nahen die Heimsuchungen der Stadt und ein jeder hat eine Mordwaffe in seiner Hand.

Siehe, da kamen sechs Männer den Weg vom oberen Tore herab, das nach Mitternacht zu liegt, und jeder hatte eine Waffe des Verderbens in seiner Hand; ein Mann aber war in ihrer Mitte, in Linnen gekleidet und ein Schreibzeug an seiner Seite; diese trafen ein und stellten sich neben den ehernen Altar.

Und die Herrlichkeit des Herrn Israels erhob sich von dem Cherub, auf dem sie gewesen, nach der Schwelle des Hauses hin und rief den Mann, der in Linnen gekleidet war und das Schreibzeug an der Seite hatte.

Und der Herr sprach zu ihm: Gehe mitten durch die Stadt, mitten durch Jerusalem hindurch und zeichne ein Tau auf die Stirne der Männer, welche über alle Greuel seufzen und wehklagen, die in ihrer Mitte begangen werden.

Zu jenen aber sprach er, so dass ich es hörte: Gehet durch die Städte hinter ihm her und erschlaget, euer Auge schone nicht und habe kein Erbarmen!

Greise, Jünglinge, Jungfrauen, Kinder und Weiber tötet, bis sie vernichtet sind; aber niemand, an dem ihr das Tau sehet, tötet und bei meinem Heiligtum machet den Anfang! So begannen sie bei den Ältesten, welche vor dem Hause waren.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Verunreiniget das Haus und füllet die Vorhöfe mit Erschlagenen an, dann ziehet fort! Da zogen sie aus und erschlugen die, welche in der Stadt waren.

Als nun das Morden zu Ende war und ich allein zurückblieb, fiel ich auf mein Angesicht nieder und rief mit lauter Stimme: Wehe, wehe, wehe, Herr, Gott! willst du denn den ganzen Überrest Israels vertilgen, indem du deinen Grimm vollends über Jerusalem ausgießest?

Da sprach er zu mir: Die Verschuldung des Hauses Israel und Juda ist überaus groß, das Land ist voll von Blutschuld und die Stadt voll von Abtrünnigkeit, denn sie sagen: Der Herr hat das Land verlassen und der Herr sieht nicht!

So soll denn auch mein Auge nicht schonen und ich will kein Erbarmen üben, ihren Wandel will ich auf ihr Haupt zurückbringen.

Und siehe, der Mann, der in Linnen gekleidet war und das Schreibzeug an seiner Seite hatte, brachte Bescheid, indem er sprach: Ich habe getan, wie du mir befohlen hast!
