The Book of Tobit (Tobias)

- Kapitel 7 -

They are kindly entertained by Raguel. Tobias demands Sara to wife.

They came to Ecbatana, and arrived at the house of Raguel. But Sarah met them; and she greeted them, and they her. Then she brought them into the house.

Raguel said to Edna his wife, “This young man really resembles Tobit my cousin!”

And Raguel asked them, “Where are you two from, kindred?” They said to him, “We are of the sons of Naphtali, who are captives in Nineveh.”

He said to them, “Do you know Tobit our brother?” They said, “We know him.” Then he said to them, “Is he in good health?”

They said, “He is both alive, and in good health.” Tobias said, “He is my father.”

And Raguel sprang up, and kissed him, wept,

blessed him, and said to him, “You are the son of an honest and good man.” When he had heard that Tobit had lost his sight, he was grieved, and wept;

and Edna his wife and Sarah his daughter wept. They received them gladly; and they killed a ram of the flock, and served them meat. But Tobias said to Raphael, “Brother Azarias, speak of those things of which you talked about in the way, and let the matter be finished.”

So he communicated the thing to Raguel. Raguel said to Tobias, “Eat, drink, and make merry:

for it belongs to you to take my child. However I will tell you the truth.

I have given my child to seven men of our relatives, and whenever they came in to her, they died in the night. But for the present be merry.” And Tobias said, “I will taste nothing here, until you all make a covenant and enter into that covenant with me.”

Raguel said, “Take her to yourself from now on according to custom. You are her relative, and she is yours. The merciful God will give all good success to you.”

And he called his daughter Sarah, and took her by the hand, and gave her to be wife of Tobias, and said, “Behold, take her to yourself after the law of Moses, and lead her away to your father.” And he blessed them.

He called Edna his wife, then took a book, wrote a contract, and sealed it.

Then they began to eat.

And Raguel called his wife Edna, and said to her, “Sister, prepare the other chamber, and bring her in there.” She did as he asked her, and brought her in there. She wept, and she received the tears of her daughter, and said to her, “Be comforted, my child. May the Lord of heaven and earth give you favor(a) for this your sorrow. Be comforted, my daughter.”

Sie werden von Raguel freundlich bewirtet. Tobias verlangt Sara zur Frau

Sie trafen also bei Raguel ein und Raguel nahm sie mit Freuden auf.

Als nun Raguel den Tobias sah, sprach er zu Anna, seinem Weibe: Wie ähnlich ist dieser Jüngling dem Sohne meiner Schwester!

Als er dies gesagt hatte, sprach er: Woher seid ihr, Jünglinge, unsere Brüder? Sie antworteten: Wir sind aus dem Stamme Nephthali, von den Gefangenen in Ninive.

Raguel sprach zu ihnen: Kennt ihr Tobias, meinen Bruder? Sie antworteten: Wir kennen ihn!

Und als er viel Gutes von ihm redete, sprach der Engel zu Raguel: Tobias, nach welchem du fragst, ist der Vater von diesem hier.

Da fiel Raguel ihm um den Hals und küsste ihn unter Tränen und an seinem Halse weinend,

sprach er: Segen komme über dich, mein Sohn! Denn du bist der Sohn eines guten und vortrefflichen Mannes.

Auch Anna, sein Weib, und Sara, ihre Tochter, weinten.

Nachdem sie aber geredet hatten, befahl Raguel, einen Widder zu schlachten und ein Mahl zu bereiten. Als er sie nun aufforderte, sich zum Mahle niederzusetzen,

sprach Tobias: Ich werde hier heute weder essen noch trinken, wenn du mir nicht zuvor meine Bitte gewährst und versprichst, mir Sara, deine Tochter, zu geben.

Als Raguel dies Wort hörte, erschrak er, da er wusste, was jenen sieben Männern begegnet war, welche zu ihr gegangen waren; und er fing an zu fürchten, es möchte ihm ebenso ergehen. Da er nun zögerte und ihm auf die Bitte keine Antwort gab,

sprach der Engel zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, sie ihm zu geben, denn diesem Gottesfürchtigen gebührt deine Tochter zum Weibe; darum hat sie kein anderer erhalten können.

Da sprach Raguel: Ich zweifle nicht, dass Gott mein Gebet und meine Tränen vor sein Angesicht hat kommen lassen,

und ich glaube, dass er euch deswegen zu mir hat kommen lassen, damit sie nach dem Gesetze Moses in ihre Verwandtschaft heirate, und hege nun keinen Zweifel mehr, dass ich sie dir geben werde.

Und er fasste die Rechte seiner Tochter, legte sie in die Rechte des Tobias und sprach: Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Isaaks und der Gott Jakobs sei mit euch und verbinde euch und erfülle seinen Segen an euch!

Dann nahmen sie Papier und schrieben den Ehevertrag.

Hierauf hielten sie das Mahl und priesen Gott.

Und Raguel rief Anna, sein Weib, zu sich und befahl ihr, ein anderes Gemach zuzurichten.

Und sie führte Sara, ihre Tochter, hinein, diese aber weinte.

Da sprach sie zu ihr: Sei guten Mutes, meine Tochter! der Herr des Himmels gebe dir Freude für den Kummer, den du gelitten hast.
