- Kapitel 7 -

(Galatians 3:15–25)

Or don’t you know, brothers(a) (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?

For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.

For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law worked in our members to bring out fruit to death.

But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

God’s Law Is Holy

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”(b)

But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

The commandment which was for life, this I found to be for death;

for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good.

Struggling with Sin

Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful.

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

I find then the law that, while I desire to do good, evil is present.

For I delight in God’s law after the inward person,

but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.

Befreit vom Gesetz

(Galater 3,15-25)

Oder wisset ihr nicht, Brüder! (denn zu solchen, die das Gesetz kennen, rede ich), dass das Gesetz über den Menschen herrscht, so lange er lebt?

Denn eine verheiratete Frau ist, so lange der Mann lebt, an das Gesetz gebunden; wenn aber ihr Mann gestorben ist, so ist sie von dem Gesetze des Mannes entbunden.

Demnach wird sie eine Ehebrecherin heißen, wenn sie, solange der Mann lebt, sich zu einem anderen Mann gesellt; wenn aber ihr Mann gestorben ist, so ist sie befreit von dem Gesetze des Mannes, so dass sie keine Ehebrecherin ist, wenn sie mit einem andern Mann lebt.

Somit seid auch ihr, meine Brüder! durch den Leib Christi dem Gesetze abgetötet, um einen andern, dem von den Toten Erstandenen, anzugehören, damit wir für Gott Frucht bringen.

Denn da wir im Fleische waren, waren die durch das Gesetz erregten sündhaften Leidenschaften wirksam in unsern Gliedern, so dass sie für den Tod Frucht brachten.

Jetzt aber sind wir von dem Gesetze des Todes, in welchem wir festgehalten wurden, befreit, so dass wir in Neuheit des Geistes und nicht nach dem alten Buchstaben dienen.

Der Vorteil der Sünde im Gesetz

Was werden wir also sagen? Ist das Gesetz Sünde? Das sei ferne! Aber ich erkannte die Sünde, nur durch das Gesetz; denn ich hätte nichts von der Begierlichkeit gewußt, wenn das Gesetz nicht sagte: Du sollst nicht begehren!

Da ergriff die Sünde die Gelegenheit und regte durch das Gebot in mir jegliche Begierde an; denn ohne das Gesetz war die Sünde tot.

Ich aber lebte einst ohne das Gesetz; sobald aber das Gesetz kam, lebte die Sünde auf;

ich dagegen starb, und so erwies sich für mich das Gebot, welches zum Leben gegeben war, als zum Tode führend.

Denn die Sünde nahm Anlass vom Gebote, und verführte mich, und tötete mich durch dasselbe.

So ist denn das Gesetz heilig, und das Gebot heilig, gerecht und gut.

Das Gesetz kann nicht vor der Sünde bewahren

Was also gut ist, ist mir zum Tode geworden? Das sei ferne! Aber die Sünde hat, damit sie als Sünde offenbar werde, durch das Gute mir den Tod bewirkt, damit die Sünde über die Maßen sündhaft werde durch das Gebot.

Denn wir wissen, dass das Gesetz geistig ist; ich aber bin fleischlich, verkauft unter die Gewalt der Sünde.

Denn was ich tue, erkenne ich nicht; denn nicht das Gute, das ich will, vollbringe ich, sondern das Böse, das ich hasse, tue ich.

Wenn ich aber das, was ich nicht will, tue, so stimme ich dem Gesetze bei, dass es gut ist.

Nun aber vollbringe ich es nicht mehr, sondern die mir innewohnende Sünde.

Denn ich weiß, dass in mir, das ist in meinem Fleische, nichts Gutes wohnt. Denn das Wollen liegt mir nahe, aber das Vollbringen des Guten finde ich nicht.

Denn nicht, was ich will, das Gute, tue ich; sondern was ich nicht will, das Böse, vollbringe ich.

Wenn ich aber das tue, was ich nicht will, so bin nicht mehr ich es, der es vollbringt, sondern die mir innewohnende Sünde.

Ich finde also das Gesetz, dass, wenn ich das Gute tun will, mir das Böse anhängt.

Denn ich erfreue mich mit am Gesetze Gottes dem innern Menschen nach;

ich sehe aber ein anderes Gesetz in meinen Gliedern, das dem Gesetze meiner Vernunft widerstreitet und mich zum Sklaven des Gesetzes der Sünde macht, das in meinen Gliedern ist.

Ich unglückseliger Mensch! Wer wird mich erlösen von dem Leibe dieses Todes?

Die Gnade Gottes durch Jesus Christus, unsern Herrn. Somit diene ich selbst mit der Vernunft dem Gesetze Gottes, mit dem Fleische aber dem Gesetze der Sünde.
