- Kapitel 15 -

The assignment of land for the tribe of the people of Judah, given to their clans, extended south to the border of Edom, with the wilderness of Sin being the farthest point to the south.

Their border on the south ran from the end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces to the south.

Their boundary next went out to the south of the hill of Akrabbim and passed along to Sin, and went up south of Kadesh Barnea, along by Hezron, and up to Addar, where it turned about to Karka.

It passed along to Azmon, went by the brook of Egypt, and came to its end at the sea. This was their south boundary.

The eastern boundary was the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan. The border on the north ran from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan.

It went up to Beth Hoglah and passed along north of Beth Arabah. Then it went up to the Stone of Bohan the son of Reuben.

Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite the hill of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. Then the border passed along to the springs of En Shemesh and went to En Rogel.

Then the border went up the Valley of Ben Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite city, that is, Jerusalem. Then it went up to the top of the hill that lies over the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, which is at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.

Then the border extended from the top of the hills to the spring of Nephtoah, and went out from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the border bends around to Baalah, the same as Kiriath Jearim.

Then the border circled around west of Baalah to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north, the same as Kesalon, went down to Beth Shemesh, and crossed over to Timnah.

The border went out beside the northern hill of Ekron, and then it bends around to Shikkeron and passed along to Mount Baalah, from there it went to Jabneel. The border ended at the sea.

The western boundary was the Great Sea and its coastline. This is the border around the tribe of Judah, clan by clan.

Caleb’s Portion and Conquest

(Judges 1:8–26)

In keeping with the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua, Joshua gave Caleb son of Jephunneh an assignment of land among the tribe of Judah, Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron, Arba was the father of Anak.

Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, descendants of Anak.

He went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir, Debir used to be called Kiriath Sepher.

Caleb said, “The man who attacks Kiriath Sepher and captures it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as a wife.”

When Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, captured it, Caleb gave him Achsah his daughter as a wife.

Soon after that, Achsah came to Othniel and she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”

Achsah replied, “Do me a special favor, since you have given me the land of the Negev: Also give me some springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper springs and lower springs.

The Cities of Judah

This was the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, given to their clans.

The cities belonging to the tribe of Judah in the extreme south, toward the border of Edom, were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan,

Ziph, Telem, Bealoth.

Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron, this was also known as Hazor,

Amam, Shema, Moladah,

Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet,

Hazar Shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah.

Baalah, Iyim, Ezem,

Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah,

Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,

Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon. These were twenty-nine cities in all, including their villages.

In the lower hill country to the west, there were Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah,

Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam,

Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah,

Shaaraim, Adithaim, and Gederah, that is, Gederothaim. These were fourteen cities in number, including their villages.

Zenan, Hadashah, Migdalgad,

Dilean, Mizpah, Joktheel,

Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon.

Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish,

Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah, Makkedah. These were sixteen cities in number, including their villages.

Libnah, Ether, Ashan,

Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib,

Keilah, Achzib, Mareshah. These were nine cities, including their villages.

Ekron, with its surrounding towns and villages;

from Ekron to the Great Sea, all the settlements that were near Ashdod, including their villages.

Ashdod, its surrounding towns and villages; Gaza, its surrounding towns and villages; to the brook of Egypt, and to the Great Sea with its coastline.

In the hill country, Shamir, Jattir, Socoh,

Dannah, Kiriath Sannah, that is, Debir,

Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim,

Goshen, Holon, and Giloh. These were eleven cities, including their villages.

Arab, Dumah, Eshan,

Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah,

Humtah, Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron, and Zior. These were nine cities, including their villages.

Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah,

Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah,

Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah. These were ten cities, including their villages.

Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor,

Maarath, Beth Anoth, and Eltekon. These were six cities, including their villages.

Kiriath Baal, that is, Kiriath Jearim, and Rabbah. These were two cities, including their villages.

In the wilderness, there were Beth Arabah, Middin, Secacah,

Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En Gedi. These were six cities, including their villages.

But as for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the tribe of Judah could not drive them out, so the Jebusites live there with the tribe of Judah to this day.

Das Land Juda

Der Anteil nun der Söhne Judas nach seinen Geschlechtern war dieser: Von der Grenze Edoms an, die Wüste Sin, südwärts bis zum äußersten Mittagslande.

Die Grenze beginnt bei der Spitze des Salzmeeres, bei der Zunge desselben, die nach Süden gerichtet ist,

und geht gegen den Skorpionsteig hin durch Sina, und zieht sich dann aufwärts nach Kadesbarne, und geht nach Esron und aufwärts bis Addar, und wendet sich um Karkaa herum;

von da zieht sie sich hinüber nach Asemona, kommt zum Strome Ägyptens und läuft am großen Meere aus. Das wird die Südgrenze sein.

Im Osten aber wird die Grenze am Salzmeere beginnen und bis an das Ende des Jordans gehen; und an der Nordseite von der Meereszunge an bis zu derselben Stelle des Jordans,

und zieht sich aufwärts nach Beth-Hagla, und nördlich hinüber nach Beth-Araba, und hinauf zum Stein Boens, des Sohnes Rubens.

Weiter erstreckt sie sich bis an das Gebiet von Debera, vom Tale Achor her, und zieht sich nordwärts nach Galgala, der Anhöhe Adommim gegenüber, an der Südseite des Baches, und geht über das Wasser, das Sonnenquelle genannt wird, und läuft auf die Quelle Rogel aus.

Hierauf zieht sie sich aufwärts durch das Tal des Sohnes Ennoms am Jebusiter, das ist Jerusalem, südlich vorbei; und steigt von da aufwärts auf den Gipfel des Berges, welcher Geennom gegenüber westlich liegt, an dem äußersten Ende des Tales Raphaim gegen Norden.

Von der Spitze des Berges geht sie hinüber bis an die Wasserquelle von Nephtoa, und kommt bis an die Dörfer des Gebirges Ephron, sodann wendet sie sich gegen Baala, das ist Kariathiarim, die Waldstadt;

und von Baala zieht sie sich westlich bis an das Gebirge Seir herum, und geht hinüber an der Seite des Berges Jarim gegen Norden und Cheslon, und geht nach Bethsames herab, und hinüber nach Thamna;

dann läuft sie nordwärts weiter nach der Seite von Akkaron, und neigt sich nach Sechrona, geht über den Berg Baala, kommt nach Jebneel, und endet nach Westen mit der Grenze des großen Meeres.

Dies sind die Grenzen der Söhne Judas nach ihren Geschlechtern ringsum.

Kaleb nimmt Hebron und Debir ein

(Richter 1,8-26)

Kaleb aber, dem Sohne Jephones, gab er als Anteil inmitten der Söhne Judas, wie der Herr ihm geboten, Kariath-Arbe, des Vaters Enaks, das ist Hebron.

Und Kaleb vertilgte aus ihr die drei Söhne Enaks, Sesai, und Ahiman, und Tholmai vom Stamme Enaks.

Von da zog er hinauf und kam zu den Bewohnern von Dabir, welches zuvor Kariath-Sepher, das ist die Schriftstadt, hieß.

Und Kaleb sprach: Wer Kariath-Sepher schlägt und es einnimmt, dem will ich meine Tochter Axa zur Frau geben.

Othoniel, der Sohn des Kenez, der Kalebs jüngster Bruder war, nahm sie ein, und er gab ihm seine Tochter Axa zur Frau.

Als sie nun zusammen fortziehen wollten, ward ihr von ihrem Manne geraten, sie sollte von ihrem Vater ein Stück Feldes verlangen; und sie seufzte, als sie auf dem Esel saß. Da sprach Kaleb zu ihr: Was hast du?

Sie antwortete: gib mir einen Segen! Du hast mir das dürre Südland gegeben, gib mir auch ein wasserreiches dazu. So gab Kaleb ihr denn ein in der Höhe und in der Tiefe wasserreiches Land.

Die Städte von Juda

Dies ist der Besitz des Stammes der Söhne Judas nach ihren verschiedenen Geschlechtern.

Die Städte, welche an dem äußersten Ende des Anteiles der Söhne Judas bei dem Edomiterlande im Süden lagen, waren: Kabseel, Eder, Jagur,

Cina, Dimona, Adada,

Kades, Asor, Jethnam,

Ziph, Telem, Baloth,

Neu-Asor, Karioth, Hesron, das ist Asor;

Amam, Sama, Molada,

Asergadda, Hassemon, Bethphelet,

Hasersual, Bersabee, Baziothia,

Balaa, Jim, Esem,

Eltholad, Cesil, Harma,

Sikeleg, Medemena, Sensenna,

Lebaoth, Selim, Aen und Remmon. Alle zusammen neunundzwanzig Städte und die zu ihnen gehörenden Dörfer.

In den Niederungen waren: Estaol, Sarea, Asena,

Zanoe, Engannim, Taphua, Enaim,

Jerimoth, Adullam, Socho, Azeka,

Saraim, Adithaim, Gedera und Gederothaim; vierzehn Städte, und die zu denselben gehörenden Dörfer.

Sanan, Hadassa, Magdalgad,

Delean, Masepha, Jekthel,

Lachis, Baskath, Eglon,

Chebbon, Leheman, Cethlis,

Gideroth, Bethdagon, Naama und Makeda; sechzehn Städte und die dazu gehörenden Dörfer.

Labana, Ether, Asan,

Jephtha, Esna, Nesib,

Keila, Achzib und Maresa; neun Städte und die zu denselben gehörenden Dörfer.

Akkaron mit seinen Dörfern und Flecken.

Von Akkaron bis zum Meere alles, was gegen Azot und dessen Dörfer zu liegt;

Azot mit seinen Dörfern und Flecken; Gaza mit seinen Dörfern und Flecken bis zum Strome Ägyptens. Und das große Meer ist die Grenze.

Und im Gebirge waren: Samir, Jether, Sokoth,

Danna, Kariathsenna, das ist Dabir,

Anab, Istemo, Anim,

Gosen, Olon und Gilo; elf Städte und die dazu gehörenden Dörfer.

Arab, Ruma, Esaan,

Janum, Beththaphua, Apheka,

Athmata, Kariatharbe, das ist Hebron, und Sior: neun Städte und die dazu gehörenden Dörfer,

Maon, Karmel, Ziph, Jota,

Jezrael, Jukadam, Zanoe,

Akkain, Gabaa und Thamna; zehn Städte und die dazu gehörenden Dörfer.

Halhul, Bessur, Gedor,

Mareth, Bethanoth und Eltekon; sechs Städte und die zu denselben gehörenden Dörfer.

Kariathbaal, das ist Kariathiarim, die Waldstadt, und Arebba; zwei Städte und die zu denselben gehörenden Dörfer.

In der Wüste waren Betharaba, Meddin, Sachacha,

Nebsan, und die Salzstadt, und Engaddi; sechs Städte und die zu denselben gehörenden Dörfer.

Die Jebusiter aber, die in Jerusalem wohnten, konnten die Söhne Judas nicht vertilgen; und so blieben die Jebusiter mit den Söhnen Judas in Jerusalem bis auf den heutigen Tag wohnen.
