The Prophet Amos

- Kapitel 4 -

Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan, you who are in the mountain of Samaria, you who oppress the poor, you who crush the needy, you who say to your husbands, “Bring us drinks.”

Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness, “Look, the days will come on you when they will take you away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.

You will go out through the breaks in the city wall, each one of you going straight through it, and you will be thrown out toward Harmon-this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“Go to Bethel and sin, to Gilgal and multiply sin, bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days.

Offer a thanksgiving sacrifice with bread; proclaim freewill offerings; announce them, for this pleases you, you people of Israel -this is the declaration of Lord Yahweh.”

“I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places. Yet you have not returned to me-this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“I also withheld rain from you when there were still three months to the harvest. I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city. One piece of land was rained on, but the piece of land where it did not rain dried up.

Two or three cities staggered to another city to drink water, but were not satisfied. Yet you have not returned to me-this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“I afflicted you with blight and mildew. The multitude of your gardens, your vineyards, your fig trees, and your olive trees-the locusts devoured them all. Yet you have not returned to me-this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“I sent a plague on you as on Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, carried away your horses, and made the stench of your camp come up to your nostrils. Yet you have not returned to me-this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“I overthrew cities among you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched out of the fire. Yet you have not returned to me -this is the declaration of Yahweh.”

“Therefore, I will do something terrible to you, Israel; and because I will do something terrible to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel!

For, look, he who forms the mountains also creates the wind, reveals his thoughts to mankind, makes the morning darkness, and treads on the high places of the Earth. Yahweh, God of hosts, is his name.”

Höret dies Wort, ihr fetten Kühe auf dem Berge Samarias, die ihr die Geringen bedrückt und die Armen niedertretet, die ihr euern Eheherrn zurufet: Schaffet herbei, lasset uns zechen!

Der Herr, Gott, hat bei seiner Heiligkeit geschworen: Sehet, es sollen Tage über euch kommen, da man euch und was von euch übrig ist auf Spießen und in siedenden Töpfen wegträgt.

Dann werdet ihr durch die Breschen ausziehen, eine um die andere, und werdet nach Armon zu hinausgestoßen, spricht der Herr.

Kommet denn nach Bethel und verübet Frevel, nach Galgala und häufet Sünden, bringet des Morgens eure Schlachtopfer dar, jeden dritten Tag eure zehnten.

Bringet gesäuerte Brote als Lobopfer dar, rufet zu freiwilligen Gaben auf und kündet sie an. denn so gefällt es euch ja, ihr Söhne Israel! Spricht der Herr, Gott.

Israel hat die Zurechtweisung nicht angenommen

Darum habe ich eure Zähne stumpf gemacht in allen euren Städten und Mangel an Brot gesendet in alle eure Wohnsitze, doch ihr habt euch nicht zu mir bekehrt, spricht der Herr.

Ich hielt euch den Regen zurück die Monate hindurch vor der Ernte und ließ auf eine Stadt Regen fallen und auf eine andere Stadt ließ ich keinen Regen fallen, ein Stück Feld ward beregnet und ein anderes, auf das ich nicht regnen ließ, verdorrte.

Da kamen zwei und drei Städte zu einer Stadt, um Wasser zu trinken, und wurden nicht satt; aber dennoch seid ihr nicht zu mir zurückgekehrt, spricht der Herr.

Ich habe euch mit Glutwind und die Menge eurer Gärten und Weinberge mit Getreidebrand geschlagen, eure Ölpflanzungen und Feigengärten fraß die Raupe, dennoch seid ihr nicht zu mir zurückgekehrt, spricht der Herr.

Ich habe den Tod unter euch gesendet, wie einst unter Ägypten, habe mit dem Schwerte eure Jünglinge geschlagen, ließ eure Rosse erbeuten und ließ den Moder eures Lagers in eure Nase aufsteigen, doch ihr seid nicht zu mir zurückgekehrt, spricht der Herr.

Ich habe euch um und um gekehrt, wie Gott Sodoma und Gomorrha umgekehrt hat, und ihr wurdet wie eine Brandscheit, das aus dem Feuer gerissen ist, aber ihr seid nicht zu mir zurückgekehrt, spricht der Herr.

Deshalb will ich dir also tun, o Israel! Da ich dir aber solches antun will, so bereite dich, deinem Gott gegenüber zu treten, Israel!

Denn siehe, er ist es, welcher die Berge gebildet und den Wind geschaffen, der dem Menschen seinen Ausspruch verkündet, er schafft Nebel am Morgen und schreitet über die Höhen der Erde daher, Herr, Gott der Heerscharen, ist sein Name.
