- Kapitel 17 -

There was a man named Micah who lived in the hill country where the tribe of Ephraim live.

One day he said to his mother, “I heard you curse whoever stole eleven hundred pieces of silver from your house. I am the one who took the silver, and I still have it.” His mother replied, “My son, I pray that Yahweh will bless you.”

Micah gave all the silver back to his mother. Then she said to herself, “I will give this silver to Yahweh. I will have someone make a carved figure and a cast figure from this silver.”

After he gave the silver to his mother, she took two hundred pieces and gave them to a metal worker. With the silver that man made a carved figure and a cast metal figure, and gave them to Micah. Micah put them in his house.

He had a house in which he worshiped his idols. He made a vest that was worn by priests, and some household idols and Micah gave one of his sons the task of being the priest for all his idols.

At that time, Israel did not have a king, and everyone did what was right, as they saw it.

There was a young man who had been living in Bethlehem in the area where the tribe of Judah lives. He wanted to work as a priest because he was a member of the tribe of Levi.

So he left Bethlehem to find another place to live and work. He came to Micah’s house in the hill country where the tribe of Ephraim lived.

Micah asked him, “Where are you from?” He replied, “I come from Bethlehem. I am from the tribe of Levi, and I am looking for a place to live and work as a priest.”

Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and you can advise me and be my priest. Each year I will give to you ten pieces of silver and some new clothes. And I will provide food for you.”

So the young man agreed to live with Micah. He became like one of Micah’s own sons.

Micah appointed him to be a priest, and he lived in Micah’s house.

Then Micah said, “Now I know that Yahweh will do good things for me, because I have a man from the tribe of Levi to be my priest.”

Es war um diese Zeit ein Mann auf dem Gebirge Ephraim, namens Michas.

Dieser sprach zu seiner Mutter: Die tausend einhundert Silberlinge, die du dir zurückgelegt und wegen deren du vor mir geschworen hattest, siehe, diese habe ich und sie sind bei mir. Sie antwortete ihm: Gesegnet seist du, mein Sohn von dem Herrn!

So gab er sie seiner Mutter zurück, diese aber sprach zu ihm: Ich habe dieses Geld dem Herrn geweiht und gelobt, dass mein Sohn es aus meiner Hand empfangen und ein geschnitztes oder gegossenes Bild daraus machen soll; so übergebe ich es dir nun.

Er gab es also seiner Mutter zurück, welche die zweihundert Silberlinge nahm und einem Silberschmiede gab, damit er ein geschnitztes und gegossenes Bild daraus mache. Dieses ward im Hause des Michas aufgestellt.

Er richtete auch in dem Hause einen kleinen Tempel für Gott ein und ließ ein Ephod und Theraphim, das ist ein Priesterkleid und Bilder machen; und er füllte die Hand eines seiner Söhne, und dieser ward sein Priester.

In jenen Tagen war kein König zu Israel, sondern jeder tat, was ihm recht schien.

Nun war auch ein anderer Jüngling aus Bethlehem in Juda, aus dem Geschlechte desselben; dieser war ein Levit und wohnte daselbst.

Derselbe zog aus der Stadt Bethlehem fort, um als Fremdling zu bleiben, wo er es gelegen fände. Als dieser auf seiner Reise in das Gebirge Ephraim kam und ein wenig in das Haus des Michas einkehrte,

fragte ihn dieser, woher er komme. Er antwortete: Ich bin ein Levit aus Bethlehem in Juda und ziehe dahin, um mich niederzulassen, wo ich kann und wo es mir nützlich dünken wird.

Michas sprach: Bleibe bei mir und sei mir Vater und Priester; so will ich dir jährlich zehn Silberlinge und ein doppeltes Gewand, und was zur Nahrung nötig ist, geben.

Da willigte er ein und blieb bei dem Manne und war bei ihm wie einer seiner Söhne.

Und Michas füllte seine Hand und behielt den Jüngling als Priester bei sich,

und sprach: Nun weiß ich, dass Gott mir wohltun wird, da ich einen Priester aus dem Levitengeschlechte habe.
