- Kapitel 20 -

(Numbers 35:9–34; Deuteronomy 4:41–43; Deuteronomy 19:1–14)

Then Yahweh said to Joshua,

“Tell the Israelite people that they should choose some cities to which people can run in order to be safe, as I told Moses that you should do.

If someone kills another person accidentally, without intending to kill that person, then he can run to one of these cities and be safe.

When that person arrives at the gate of one of those cities, he must stop there and tell the leaders of the city what happened. If they believe him, they must allow him to enter the city, and they must give him a place to live among them.

If some relative of the dead person comes to that city to get revenge, the leaders of that city must not allow the relative to take the killer, because what happened was accidental. He did not hate that person; he did not deliberately kill him.

The person who killed someone else must stay in that city until the city judges put him on trial. Only if the judges decide that the person who has run to their city did not deliberately kill the other person will they allow him to stay in that city, and he must stay there until the high priest who was serving at the time of the offense dies. Then the man may safely go back to his own home.”

So the Israelites chose these cities to be cities to which people could run to be safe: Kedesh in the region of Galilee, in the hill country where the tribe of Naphtali lived; Shechem in the hill country where the tribe of Ephraim lived; and Kiriath Arba (which is now called Hebron) in the hill country where the tribe of Judah lived;

Bezer, on the east side of the Jordan River near Jericho, in the wilderness, where the tribe of Reuben lived; Ramoth in the region of Gilead, in the land where the tribe of Gad lived; and Golan in the region of Bashan, where the tribe of Manasseh lived.

Any Israelite or any foreigner who lived among them, anyone who had killed someone accidentally, was allowed to run to one of those cities. There he would be safe from some relative of the person who died coming there and killing him to get revenge. He could stay in that city until he was put on trial to decide whether he was telling the truth when he said that he did not kill that person on purpose.

Und der Herr redete zu Josue und sprach: Rede zu den Söhnen Israels und sprich zu ihnen:

Bestimmet die Städte für die Flüchtlinge, von denen ich zu euch durch Moses gesprochen habe;

dass, wer einen Menschen unvorsätzlich getötet hat, sich in dieselben flüchte und dem Zorne des nächsten Verwandten, welcher der Bluträcher ist, entgehen könne.

Wenn er sich zu einer dieser Städte flüchtet, soll er vor dem Tore der Stadt stehen bleiben und den Ältesten jener Stadt alles sagen, was ihn als unschuldig erweisen kann, alsdann sollen sie ihn aufnehmen und ihm gestatten, daselbst zu wohnen.

Wenn ihn dann der Bluträcher verfolgt, so sollen sie ihn nicht in seine Hand übergeben; denn er hat seinen Nächsten unvorsätzlich erschlagen und es ist nicht erwiesen, dass er vor zwei oder drei Tagen sein Feind war.

Und er soll in dieser Stadt wohnen bleiben, bis er sich vor Gericht über seine Tat verantwortet hat und der Hohepriester, der zu jener Zeit sein wird, gestorben ist; dann mag der Totschläger zurückkehren und wieder in die Stadt und sein Haus gehen, von wo er geflohen war.

da bestimmten sie Kedes in Galiläa im Gebirge Nephthali, und Sichem im Gebirge Ephraim, und Kariatharbe, das ist Hebron im Gebirge Juda.

Und jenseits des Jordans östlich von Jericho bestimmten sie Bosor, welches in der Wüstenebene liegt, aus dem Gebiete des Stammes Ruben, und Ramoth in Galaad aus dem Gebiete des Stammes Gad, und Gaulon in Basan aus dem Gebiete des Stammes Manasse.

Diese Städte wurden für alle Söhne Israels und für die Fremdlinge bestimmt, welche unter ihnen wohnten; damit jeder, der einen Menschen unvorsätzlich getötet, dahin fliehe und nicht durch die Hand des Verwandten sterbe, der das vergossene Blut zu rächen begehrte, ehe er vor der Gemeinde gestanden und seine Sache dargelegt hat.
