- Kapitel 22 -

This is another message that Yahweh gave to me: “Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and say this to him:

’You are the king of Judah. You are the ruler, like King David was. You and your officials and your people must listen

to what Yahweh says: “Act fairly and justly. Do what is right. Help those who have been robbed. Rescue people from those who oppress them. Stop doing evil deeds. Do not mistreat those who have come here from other countries, and do not mistreat orphans and widows. Stop murdering here in Jerusalem.

If you obey these commands carefully, there will always be some descendant of King David who will be ruling here in Jerusalem. The king and his officials and other people will ride through the gates of the city in chariots and on horses.

But if you refuse to pay attention to these commands, I, Yahweh, solemnly declare, that this palace will become a pile of rubble.””’

A Warning about the Palace

And this is what Yahweh says about the house of the king of Judah: “I like this palace, like I like the forests in the region of Gilead and the mountains in Lebanon. But I will cause this palace to become a desert, a place that no one lives in.

I will select troops who will destroy this palace; each soldier will use his own tools to wreck the building. They will cut into pieces the beautiful big cedar beams and throw them into a fire.”

People from many nations will walk past the ruins of this city and say to each other, “Why did Yahweh destroy this city that was very great?”

And other people will reply, “He did it because his people stopped obeying the agreement that they had made with Yahweh their God. Instead, they worshiped other gods.”

A Warning about Shallum

Yahweh also says, “Do not mourn for King Josiah; do not cry because he has died. Instead, mourn for King Jehoahaz, his son, because he will be captured and taken to another country, and he will never return to see his own country, Judah, again.”

Jehoahaz became king after his father, King Josiah, died, but Jehoahaz was captured and taken to Babylonia. And this is what Yahweh says about him: “He also will never return to Judah.

He will die in that country where they have taken him as a captive and will never see his own country again.”

A Warning about Jehoiakim

And Yahweh said to me, “Terrible things will happen to King Jehoahaz’s brother, King Jehoiakim. He unjustly forced men to build his palace. The rooms on the upper level were built by men who were forced unjustly to do that work; he forced his neighbors to work for nothing; he did not pay them anything.

He said, ’I will force my workers to build a huge beautiful palace with very large rooms and many windows. They will cover the walls with fragrant cedar panels and paint them bright red.’”

But it is certainly not having a beautiful cedar palace that causes a king to be great! Jehoiakim’s father, Josiah, also had plenty of things to eat and drink. But Josiah always did things that are right and just, and that is why God blessed him.

Josiah acted justly and helped poor and needy people, so things went well for him. Yahweh says, “That is the way a person should behave who knows me.

But Jehoiakim, you are greedy and desire only to obtain things by acting dishonestly. You murder innocent people, you oppress poor people, and you treat people cruelly and violently.”

Therefore, this is what Yahweh says about Jehoiakim son of King Josiah: “When he dies, people will not mourn for him. They will not say to each other, ‘It is very sad; we are so sorry!’ The people whom he ruled will not mourn for him, saying, ‘We are sad that our king is dead; we are so sorry that the wonderful things that happened while he was king are ended.’

When he dies, people will do to his corpse what they do to a dead donkey; his corpse will be dragged out of Jerusalem and dumped outside the gates!

You people of Judah, go to the mountains in Lebanon and weep, shout in the mountains of the Bashan region, call out in mourning in the mountains of Moab, because all your friends in those areas have been destroyed.

When you were prosperous, I warned you, but you replied, ‘We will not pay attention to what you say.’ You have been acting like that since you were young; you have never obeyed me.

So, now I will punish all your leaders; it will be as though they have been blown away by the wind. They will be captured by your enemies and taken to another country. When that happens, you will truly be ashamed and disgraced because of all the wicked things that you have done.

Now, your king enjoys living in the cedar rooms in his palace, but soon he will be punished, and then he will groan like a woman who is giving birth to a baby.”

A Warning to Coniah

Yahweh says this: “Jehoiachin son of King Jehoiakim of Judah, as surely as I am alive, I will punish you. Even if you were the ring on my finger that shows that I am the king, I would pull you off.

You are afraid of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his huge army, because they are wanting to kill you. I will enable them to capture you.

I will expel you and your mother from this land, and you will be taken to another country. Neither of you were born there, but you will both die there.

You will never return to this land that you will very much desire to return to.”

Someone said, “Jehoiachin will be like a broken pot that is despised and which no one wants. He and his children will be exiled to a foreign land.

I want the people in this land to listen carefully to this message from Yahweh.

This is what Yahweh says: “In the record about the kings of Judah, write down that it will be as though this man Jehoiachin had no children, and that he has not been successful during his life, because none of his children will ever become king to rule over the people of Judah.”

So spricht der Herr: Gehe hinab zum Hause des Königs von Juda und sprich daselbst dieses Wort

und sage: Höre das Wort des Herrn, König von Juda, der du auf dem Throne Davids sitzest, du und deine Diener und dein Volk, die ihr durch dieses Tor eingehet.

So spricht der Herr: Übet Recht und Gerechtigkeit, rettet den Unterdrückten aus der Hand des Bedrängers, betrübet Fremdlinge, Waisen und Witwen nicht, verübet nicht Gewalt und Unrecht an ihnen und vergießet nicht unschuldiges Blut an diesem Orte!

Denn wenn ihr dies wirklich tun werdet, so werden Könige, welche aus Davids Geschlecht auf dessen Thron sitzen, durch die Tore dieses Hauses einziehen auf Wagen und Rossen, mit ihren Dienern und ihrem Volke.

Wenn ihr aber nicht auf diese Worte hört, so schwöre ich bei mir selbst, spricht der Herr, dass dieses Haus zur Wüstenei werden soll.

Denn so spricht der Herr über das Haus des Königs von Juda: Du gibst mir Galaad gleich, der Höhe des Libanon, aber fürwahr! Ich will dich zur Einöde machen, zu unbewohnbaren Städten.

Ich will wider dich einen Verderber mit seinen Waffen weihen, sie werden deine erlesenen Zedern umhauen und ins Feuer werfen.

Und viele Völker sollen an dieser Stadt vorüberziehen und ein jeder wird zu dem anderen sprechen: Warum hat der Herr dieser großen Stadt also getan?

Dann wird man antworten: Weil sie den Bund des Herrn, ihres Gottes, verlassen und fremde Götter angebetet und diesen gedient haben.

Weinet nicht um einen Toten und klaget nicht um ihn mit Tränen; weinet um den, der dahinzieht, denn er wird nicht mehr zurückkehren und das Land seiner Geburt nicht wieder sehen!

Botschaft an die Söhne des Josia

Denn so spricht der Herr über Sellum, den Sohn Josias, den König von Juda, der an Josias, seines Vaters, statt König geworden, aber fortgezogen ist von diesem Orte: Nicht mehr wird er hierher zurückkehren,

sondern an dem Orte, an den ich ihn habe wegführen lassen, wird er sterben und dieses Land wird er nicht mehr sehen.

Wehe dem, der sein Haus mit Ungerechtigkeit baut und seine Gemächer mit Unrecht, der seinen Nächsten ohne Bezahlung belastet und ihm seinen Lohn vorenthält,

der da spricht: Ich will mir ein geräumiges Haus bauen und weite Gemächer; der sich Fenster darin ausbricht, es mit Zedern täfelt und mit Hochrot ausmalt!

Bist du etwa dazu König, dass du mit Zedern wetteiferst? Hat dein Vater nicht auch gegessen und getrunken, aber ging es ihm nicht wohl, als er Recht und Gerechtigkeit übte?

Er schaffte den Armen und Elenden Recht, zu seinem eigenen Glücke. Geschah dies nicht darum, weil er mich kannte? spricht der Herr.

Aber deine Augen und dein Herz gehen auf Habsucht aus und auf Vergießung unschuldigen Blutes, auf Bedrückung und auf Verübung böser Werke.

Darum spricht der Herr also über Joakim, den Sohn des Josias, den König von Juda: Man wird nicht um ihn klagen: Wehe, Bruder, und: Wehe, Schwester! Man wird ihn nicht betrauern: Wehe, Gebieter, wehe, Erlauchter!

Wie man einen Esel begräbt, so wird er begraben werden, verwesen und hinausgeworfen vor die Tore Jerusalems.

Steige auf den Libanon und schreie, in Basan lass deine Stimme erschallen und rufe den Vorübergehenden zu! denn alle deine Buhlen sind vernichtet.

Ich redete zu dir, als du noch im Wohlstande warst; du aber sprachst: Ich will nicht hören! Dies war dein Wandel von deiner Jugend an, dass du nicht auf meine Stimme hörtest.

Alle deine Hirten wird der Wind wegweiden und deine Liebhaber werden in die Gefangenschaft wandern; ja, alsdann wirst du beschämt und zuschanden werden ob all deiner Bosheit.

Die du auf dem Libanon thronst und auf Zedern nistest, wie wirst du seufzen, wenn Schmerzen über dich kommen wie die Schmerzen einer Gebärenden.

Botschaft an Konija

So wahr ich lebe, spricht der Herr, wäre auch Jechonias, der Sohn Joakims, des Königs von Juda, ein Siegelring an meiner Rechten, so würde ich ihn von dort wegreißen!

Und ich werde dich in die Hand derer geben, die dir nach dem Leben trachten, in die Hand derer, vor denen du dich fürchtest und in die Hand Nabuchodonosors, des Königs von Babylon, und in die Hand der Chaldäer.

Und ich werde dich und deine Mutter, welche dich geboren, in ein fremdes Land schleudern, in dem ihr nicht geboren seid, und daselbst werdet ihr sterben!

In das Land aber, wohin zurückzukehren ihr Verlangen geht, sollen sie nicht zurückkehren.

Ist denn dieser Mann Jechonias ein irdenes und zerbrochenes Gefäß? Ein Gefäß ohne alle Anmut? Warum ward er mit seiner Nachkommenschaft verworfen und hingeschleudert in jenes Land, das sie nicht kannten?

O Land, Land, Land! Höre den Ausspruch des Herrn!

So spricht der Herr: Schreibe diesen Mann ein als kinderlos, als einen Mann, der kein Glück haben wird Zeit seines Lebens; denn keinem seiner Nachkommen wird es zuteil werden, auf dem Throne Davids zu sitzen und fernerhin die Herrschaft inne zu haben über Juda.
