- Kapitel 13 -

One day Yahweh said to me, “Go and buy a linen waistcloth. Put it on, but do not wash it.”

So I bought a very nice waistcloth, which is what Yahweh told me to do, and I put it on.

Then later Yahweh gave me another message.

He said, “Go to the Euphrates River and hide your waistcloth in a crevice in the rocks.”

So I went to the river and did what Yahweh told me to do.

A long time later, Yahweh said to me, “Go back to the river and get the waistcloth that I told you to hide there.”

So I went to the Euphrates River and dug out the waistcloth from the crevice in which I had hidden it. But it was ruined, and useless.

Then Yahweh gave me this message:

“What happened to your waistcloth shows that I will destroy the things that the people of Jerusalem and other places in Judah are very proud of.

Those wicked people refuse to pay attention to what I say. They stubbornly do just what they desire to do; they worship other gods. Therefore, they will become completely useless, like your waistcloth.

Just like a waistcloth clings closely to a man’s waist, I wanted the people of Israel and Judah to cling closely to me. I wanted them to be my people, people who would praise me and honor me. But they would not pay attention to me.

The Wineskins

So, tell this to them: ‘Yahweh, the God whom you Israelite people worship, says that every leather wineskin should be filled with wine.’ And when you tell that to them, they will reply, ‘Of course we know that all wineskins should be filled with wine!’

And then you must tell them, ‘No, that is not what Yahweh means. What he said means that he will cause this land to be filled with people who are drunk. That will include all of you, the king who sits on the throne that King David previously sat on, the priests and the prophets, and even the common people of Jerusalem.’

He is saying, ‘I will cause a drunken brawl among you. Even parents will brawl with their children. I will not pity you or act mercifully toward you at all; pitying you will not prevent me from getting rid of you.’”

Captivity Threatened

You people of Judah, pay very careful attention. Do not be proud, because Yahweh has spoken to you.

It is as though he is ready to bring darkness on you and to cause you to stumble and fall as you walk on the hills when it is becoming dark. So praise Yahweh your God before that happens. If you do not do that, you will look for light, but all you will see is darkness and gloom.

And if you still refuse to heed what he says, what will happen to you because of your being proud will cause me to cry when I am alone. My eyes will be filled with tears because you, Yahweh’s people, whom he takes care of like a shepherd takes care of his flock, will all be captured by your enemies and taken to other countries.

You people of Judah, say to the king and to his mother, “Come down from sitting on your thrones and humbly sit in the dirt, because your enemies will soon snatch from your heads your glorious crowns.”

The towns in the southern Judean wilderness will be surrounded by your enemies, and no one will be able to get through their lines to rescue the people in those towns. You people of Judah will be captured and taken away; you will all be exiled.

You leaders of Jerusalem, open your eyes and look: The enemy armies are ready to march down from the north. When that happens, what will happen to the people of Judah who are like a beautiful flock of sheep, people that he gave to you to take care of?

What will you say when Yahweh appoints people from other countries to rule over you, people who you mistakenly thought were your friends? You will suffer very much pain, like a woman who is about to give birth to a baby.

You will ask yourselves, “Why is this happening to us?” I will reply that it is because of your many sins. That is why soldiers of the invading armies will lift up the skirts of your women and rape them.

A man from Ethiopia certainly cannot change the color of his black skin, and a leopard certainly cannot change its spots. Similarly, you cannot start doing what is good, because you have always done what is evil.

Yahweh says, “I will scatter you like chaff that is blown away by the wind from the desert.

That is what is certainly going to happen to you, the things that I have determined will happen to you, because you have forgotten me, and you are trusting in false gods.

It is as though I myself will pull your skirts up over your faces and cause you to be very ashamed because everyone will be able to see your private parts.

I have seen that you act like men who are eager to commit adultery; you are like male horses that whinny when they desire to mate with a female horse. I have seen that you worship disgusting idols in the fields and on the hills. You people of Jerusalem, terrible things will happen to you because you will not be obedient and live a good life! How long will it be until you are acceptable to me again?”

So spricht der Herr zu mir: Gehe hin und kaufe dir einen leinenen Gürtel und lege ihn um deine Hüften, aber bringe ihn nicht ins Wasser!

Da kaufte ich mir einen Gürtel, wie der Herr befohlen, und legte ihn um meine Hüften.

Alsdann erging das Wort des Herrn an mich zum zweiten Male, also:

Nimm den Gürtel, den du gekauft hast, der um deine Hüften geschlungen ist, und mache dich auf und begib dich an den Euphrat und verbirg ihn daselbst in einer Felsenspalte!

Da ging ich hin und verbarg ihn am Euphrat, wie mir der Herr geboten hatte.

Nach vielen Tagen aber geschah es, dass der Herr zu mir sprach: Mache dich auf und gehe an den Euphrat und hole von da den Gürtel, den ich dir befohlen habe daselbst zu verbergen!

Da ging ich hin an den Euphrat und grub und nahm den Gürtel von dem Orte, wo ich ihn verborgen hatte; und siehe, der Gürtel war verdorben, so dass er zu nichts mehr taugte.

Und es erging das Wort des Herrn an mich, also:

So spricht der Herr: Ebenso will ich den Stolz Judas und den gewaltigen Hochmut Jerusalems vermodern lassen.

Dies ruchlose Volk, das auf meine Worte nicht hören will und nach der Bosheit seines Herzens dahinwandelt und fremden Göttern nachgeht, um diesen zu dienen und sie anzubeten, sie sollen diesem Gürtel gleich werden, der zu nichts mehr taugt.

Denn wie sich der Gürtel an die Hüften eines Mannes anschließt, so habe ich das ganze Haus Israel und das ganze Haus Juda an mich anschmiegen lassen, spricht der Herr, dass sie mein Volk und mein Ruhm, mein Lob und Preis seien, aber sie haben nicht auf mich gehört.

So sprich denn dieses Wort zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Alle Krüge werden mit Wein gefüllt. Sagen sie dann zu dir: Wissen wir denn nicht, dass alle Krüge mit Wein gefüllt werden?

so sprich zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr: Siehe, ich werde alle Bewohner dieses Landes, die Könige, die aus dem Geschlechte Davids auf seinem Throne sitzen, die Priester, die Propheten und alle Bewohner von Jerusalem mit Trunkenheit erfüllen

und ich werde sie zerstreuen, einen jeden von seinem Bruder weg, Väter und Söhne zumal, spricht der Herr; ich will nicht schonen und keine Nachsicht noch Erbarmen üben, dass ich sie nicht verderben sollte.

Stolz geht der Gefangenschaft voraus

So höret nun und vernehmet es! überhebet euch nicht, denn der Herr hat gesprochen.

Gebet dem Herrn, euerm Gott, die Ehre, ehe es finster wird und ehe eure Füße sich an finsteren Bergen stoßen; ihr werdet auf Licht warten, er aber wird es in Todesschatten und in Finsternis wandeln.

Wenn ihr nicht darauf hört, wird meine Seele im verborgenen weinen über solchen Hochmut; mein Auge wird weinen, ja in Tränen zerfließen, weil die Herde des Herrn weggeführt wird.

Sage dem Könige und der Herrscherin: Demütigt euch, setzt euch nieder zur Erde! Denn die Krone eurer Herrlichkeit ist von eurem Haupte gesunken.

Die Stätte gegen Mittag sind verschlossen und niemand öffnet sie mehr, weggeführt ist ganz Juda, völlig weggeführt.

Erhebet eure Augen und schauet, die ihr von Mitternacht her kommt! wo ist die Herde, die dir gegeben war, deine prächtigen Schafe?

Was wirst du sagen, wenn er dich so heimsucht? Du selbst hast sie ja gelehrt dir zum Schaden und unterwiesen, über dich zu herrschen; werden dich da nicht Schmerzen ergreifen wie ein Weib in Geburtswehen?

Wenn du nun in deinem Herzen sagen wolltest: Warum hat mich solches betroffen? Wegen der Menge deiner Missetaten ist deine Schande aufgedeckt, sind deine Fußsohlen befleckt.

Kann wohl ein Mohr seine Haut verändern oder ein Pardel seine Flecken? So wenig könnt ihr gut handeln, nachdem ihr an das Böse gewöhnt seid.

So will ich sie wie Stoppeln zerstreuen, die der Wind der Wüste hinwegrafft.

Das ist dein Los und dein Anteil, den ich dir zugemessen, spricht der Herr, weil du meiner vergessen und dein Vertrauen auf Lügen gesetzt hast.

Darum will auch ich deine Hüften vor deinen Augen entblößen, dass deine Schande sichtbar werde;

denn ich habe deine Ehebrüche, dein Wiehern und den Frevel deiner Buhlerei, deine Greuel auf den Hügeln im Felde gesehen. Wehe dir, Jerusalem! wie lange wird es noch währen, bis du rein wirst und mir anhängst, wie lange noch?
