- Kapitel 18 -

One day during that year, at the time of day when it was hot, Yahweh appeared to Abraham again near the big trees that belonged to Mamre. Abraham was sitting in the entrance to his tent.

Abraham looked up and was surprised to see three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them. He prostrated himself with his face on the ground in respect.

He said to one of them, “Lord, if you are pleased with me, stay here for a little while.

Allow my servants to bring a little water and wash your feet, and then rest under this tree.

Since you have come here to me, allow me to bring you some food so that you can gain strength before you leave.” The men replied, “All right, do as you have said.”

Then Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick, get twenty kilograms of our best flour and make some bread!”

Then he ran to the herd of cattle and selected a calf whose meat would be tender and tasty. He gave it to one of his servants, who hurried to kill and cook it.

When the meat was cooked, Abraham brought some curds, milk, and the meat that the servant had prepared. He placed them in front of them. Then he stood near them under a tree while they ate.

Sarah Laughs at the Promise

After they ate, they asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He replied, “She is in the tent.”

Then the leader of the group said, “I will return to you in the springtime next year, and listen, your wife Sarah will have an infant son.” It happened that Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind the man who was speaking.

Now Abraham and Sarah were very old, and Sarah was far past the time of childbearing.

So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, “My body is worn out, and my husband is old. So how can I have the pleasure of having a baby?”

Yahweh said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why was she thinking, ‘I am too old, so how can I bear a child’?

Is there anything too difficult for me? I will return about this time next year in the springtime, the time I have fixed, and Sarah will have an infant son.”

Then Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But Yahweh said, “Do not deny it! You did laugh.”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

When the three men got up to leave, they looked down into the valley toward the city of Sodom. Abraham was walking with them to say “Farewell” to them.

Yahweh said to himself, “It is not right for me to prevent Abraham from knowing what I plan to do.

Abraham’s descendants will become a great and powerful people group. And people of all people groups will be blessed because of what I do for him.

I have chosen him in order that he will direct his children and their families so that they will obey me and do what is right and fair, so that I will do for Abraham what I have promised to do for him.”

So Yahweh said to Abraham, “I have heard the terrible things that some people have been saying about the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Their sins are very great.

So I will go down now, and I will see if all the terrible things that I have heard are true or not true.”

Then the two other men turned and started walking toward Sodom. But Abraham kept standing in front of Yahweh.

Abraham came closer to him and said, “Will you really destroy people who have done nothing wrong along with the wicked ones?

What will you do if there are fifty people in the city who have done nothing wrong? Will you really destroy them all, and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people who have done nothing wrong?

Certainly you would not do such a thing, to kill good people along with wicked ones, and treat good people and wicked people the same way. You could not do that, because you, who are the judge of everyone on the earth, will certainly do what is right regarding the people of Sodom!”

Yahweh replied, “If I find fifty people in Sodom who have done nothing wrong, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Abraham replied, “I should not be bold like this and speak to you, my Lord, because I am as worthless as dust and ashes.

But what will you do if there are only forty-five people who have done nothing wrong? Will you destroy everyone in the whole city because there are only forty-five and not fifty good people?” Yahweh replied, “I will not destroy it if I find that there are forty-five good people.”

Abraham continued to speak to him like this, saying, “What will you do if you find that there are only forty good people there?” Yahweh replied, “I will not destroy them all, for the sake of the forty.”

Abraham said, “Please do not be angry now. Let me speak again. What will you do if there are only thirty good people?” He replied, “I will not do it if I find that there are thirty there.”

Abraham said, “I should not be bold and speak to you like this, my Lord. But what will you do if you find that there are only twenty good people there?” He replied, “I will not destroy the whole city, for the sake of those twenty.”

Finally, Abraham said, “My Lord, do not be angry now. Just let me speak one time more. What will you do if you find that there are only ten good people there?” Yahweh answered, “I will not destroy the city for the sake of those ten.”

Abraham said no more. As soon as Yahweh finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham went home.

Der Sohn der Verheißung

Der Herr aber erschien ihm im Tale Mambre, während er gerade zur heißen Tageszeit an dem Eingange seines Zeltes saß.

Und als er seine Augen erhob, erschienen ihm drei Männer, nahe bei ihm stehend; und da er sie sah, lief er ihnen von dem Eingange seines Zeltes entgegen und neigte sich bis zur Erde.

Und er sprach: Herr! habe ich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden, so gehe nicht an deinem Knechte vorüber.

Ich will ein wenig Wasser bringen, lasset eure Füße waschen und ruhet aus unter dem Baume.

Auch will ich einen Bissen Brot vorlegen, dass ihr euch stärket, darnach möget ihr weiter ziehen; denn deswegen seid ihr vom Wege zu eurem Knechte gekommen. Und sie sprachen: Tue, wie du gesagt hast.

Da eilte Abraham in das Zelt zu Sara und sprach zu ihr: Knete eilends drei Maß Weißmehl und backe Aschenkuchen!

Er selbst aber lief zu der Herde, nahm das zarteste und beste Kalb und übergab es dem Diener, welcher es eilig zubereitete.

Sodann nahm er Butter und Milch, und das Kalb, das er zubereitet hatte, und setzte es ihnen vor; er selbst aber stand bei ihnen unter dem Baume.

Nachdem sie gegessen hatten, sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist Sara, dein Weib? Er antwortete: Dort im Zelte ist sie.

Er sprach zu ihm: Ich werde zu dir zu dieser Zeit, wenn das Leben vorhanden, wiederkommen, und Sara, dein Weib, wird einen Sohn haben. Da Sara dies hörte, lachte sie hinter dem Eingange des Zeltes.

Beide aber waren alt und hoch betagt, und der Sara erging es nicht mehr, wie es Frauen zu geschehen pflegt.

Da lachte sie für sich und sprach: Nun, da ich alt geworden und mein Herr auch alt ist, soll ich der Lust pflegen?

Der Herr aber sprach zu Abraham: Warum lacht Sara und spricht: Sollte ich wirklich, nachdem ich alt geworden, noch gebären?

Sollte wohl Gott etwas schwer sein? Wie ich gesagt, werde ich zu eben dieser Zeit wieder zu dir kommen, wenn das Leben vorhanden, und dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.

Da leugnete Sara und sprach: Ich habe nicht gelacht; denn sie war sehr erschrocken. Der Herr aber sprach: Nicht also ist es, sondern du hast gelacht.

Abrahams Fürsprache für Sodom

Da machten sich die Männer auf von da und wandten ihre Augen gegen Sodoma; und Abraham ging mit ihnen, sie zu geleiten.

Und der Herr sprach: Kann ich etwa Abraham verbergen, was ich tun will,

da er doch der Stammvater eines großen und sehr mächtigen Volkes werden wird, und in ihm alle Völker der Erde gesegnet werden sollen?

Denn ich weiß, dass er seinen Kindern und seinem Hause nach ihm gebieten wird, den Weg des Herrn zu halten und Recht und Gerechtigkeit zu üben, damit der Herr um Abrahams willen alles kommen lasse, was er zu ihm gesprochen hat.

Da sprach der Herr: Das Geschrei über Sodoma und Gomorrha hat sich gemehrt, und ihre Sünde ist allzuschwer geworden.

Darum will ich niedersteigen und sehen, ob sie nach dem Rufe, der zu mir gedrungen ist, getan haben, oder ob es nicht also ist, dass ich es wisse.

Und sie wandten sich von dannen und gingen nach Sodoma zu; Abraham aber stand noch vor dem Herrn.

Und er nahte sich ihm und sprach: Wirst du den Gerechten mit dem Gottlosen verderben?

Wenn fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt sind, sollten auch sie mit umkommen? und wirst du des Ortes nicht um der fünfzig Gerechten willen schonen, die darin sind?

Fern sei es von dir, solches zu tun, den Gerechten mit den Gottlosen zu töten, und dass es dem Gerechten wie dem Gottlosen ergehe, das ist fern von dir; der du die ganze Welt richtest, nimmer wirst du ein solches Urteil vollziehen.

Der Herr sprach zu ihm: Wenn ich in Sodoma fünfzig Gerechte finde inmitten der Stadt, so werde ich um ihretwillen dem ganzen Orte vergeben.

Da begann Abraham wiederum und sprach: Weil ich einmal mich unterfangen habe, so will ich zu meinem Herrn reden, obwohl ich Staub und Asche bin.

Wie? wenn fünf Gerechte weniger denn fünfzig da sind, wirst du, weil nur fünfundvierzig da sind, die ganze Stadt vernichten? Er sprach: ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich daselbst fünfundvierzig finde.

Und wiederum sprach er zu ihm: Wenn sich aber vierzig daselbst finden, was wirst du tun? Er sprach: Ich werde um der vierzig willen nicht strafen.

Und Abraham sprach: Ach, zürne nicht, Herr, wenn ich rede. Wie? wenn sich dreißig darin finden? Er antwortete: Wenn ich dreißig darin finde, will ich es nicht tun.

Und er sprach: Weil ich einmal begonnen, will ich zu meinem Herrn reden. Wie? wenn sich zwanzig darin finden? Er sprach: Ich will sie nicht töten, um der zwanzig willen.

Da sprach er: Ich bitte, zürne nicht, mein Herr, wenn ich noch einmal rede. Wie? wenn sich zehn darin finden? Er sprach: Ich werde sie nicht vertilgen um der zehn willen.

Und der Herr ging hinweg, nachdem er das Gespräch mit Abraham geendet, dieser aber kehrte wieder zu seinem Wohnorte zurück.
