- Kapitel 6 -

One day the association of prophets said to Elisha, “Look, this place where we meet together with you is very small.

Allow us to go to the Jordan River and cut down some trees to make logs to build a new meeting place.” So Elisha said, “Very well, go.”

One of them said to Elisha, “Please come with us.” So Elisha replied, “Very well, I will go with you.”

So they went together. When they reached the Jordan River they cut down some trees.

But while one of them was cutting down a tree, suddenly the axe head separated from the handle and fell into the water. He cried out to Elisha, “O, Master, what shall I do? The axe is not mine. I borrowed it!”

Elisha replied, “Where did it fall into the water?” After the man showed him the place, Elisha cut off a stick, threw it into the water, and the axe head rose to the water surface.

Elisha said, “Take it out of the water.” So the man reached his hand down and picked up the axe head.

Elisha Captures the Blinded Arameans

Whenever the king of Aram prepared to send his army to fight against Israel, he first consulted his officers, and then told them where they should set up their tents.

But each time Elisha would send a message to warn the king of Israel, telling him where the army of Aram was planning to attack them, saying, “Be sure that your army does not go near that place, because the army of Aram has set up their tents there.”

So the king of Israel would send messengers to warn the people who lived in that place, and the people would remain on guard. That happened several times.

The king of Aram was very upset about this, so he summoned his army officers and said to them, “One of you is revealing our plans to the king of Israel. Which one of you is doing it?”

One of his officers answered, “Your Majesty, it is not one of us. Elisha the prophet knows what we plan to do, and he tells the king of Israel everything. He even knows what you say in your own bedroom!”

The king of Aram replied, “Go and find out where he is, and I will send some men there to capture him.” Someone told him, “People say that he is in the city of Dothan, north of Samaria.”

So the king sent a large group of soldiers to Dothan with horses and chariots. They arrived at night and surrounded the city.

Early the next morning, Elisha’s servant got up and went outside the house. He saw the soldiers of Aram with their horses and chariots surrounding the town. So he went inside the house and reported it to Elisha and exclaimed, “Oh, sir! What are we going to do?”

Elisha replied, “Do not be afraid! Those who are helping us are many more than those who are helping them!”

Then he prayed, “Yahweh, I request that you open my servant’s eyes in order that he can see what is out there!” So Yahweh enabled the servant to look out and see that surrounding the hill on which the town was built was a huge number of horses and chariots; they seemed to be made of fire!

When the army of Aram prepared to attack Elisha, he prayed again, saying, “Yahweh, cause all these soldiers to become blind!” Yahweh answered his prayer and caused them to be unable to see clearly.

Then Elisha went to them and said, “You are not on the right road. This is not the city that you are searching for. I will take you to the man whom you are searching for.” But he led them to the city Samaria, the capital of Israel.

As soon as they entered Samaria, Elisha prayed again, saying, “Yahweh, now enable these soldiers to see correctly again!” So Yahweh enabled them to see correctly, and they were surprised to see that they were inside Samaria.

When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “Sir, shall I tell my soldiers to kill them? Shall we kill all of them?”

Elisha replied, “No, you must not kill them. If your army captured many of your enemies in a battle, you would certainly not kill them. Give these men something to eat and drink, and then allow them to return to their king.”

So the king of Israel did that. He told his servants to provide a big feast for them. And when they had eaten and drunk plenty, he sent them away. They returned to the king of Aram and told him what had happened. So for a while after that, soldiers from Aram stopped raiding towns in Israel.

The Siege and Famine of Samaria

But some time later, Ben Hadad the king of Aram, assembled his entire army, and they went to Samaria and surrounded the city for a long time.

Because of that, after a while there was hardly any food left inside the city, so that eventually a donkey’s head, which was usually worthless, cost eighty pieces of silver, and one cup of dove’s dung cost five pieces of silver.

One day when the king of Israel was walking on top of the city wall, a woman cried out to him, “Your Majesty, help me!”

He replied, “If Yahweh will not help you, I certainly cannot. I do not have any wheat or wine!

What is your problem?” She replied, “Several days ago, that woman over there said to me, ‘Because we have nothing left to eat, let us kill your son today, in order that we can eat his flesh. Then tomorrow we can kill my son and eat his flesh.’

So we killed my son and cut his body up and boiled his flesh and ate it. The next day, I said to her, ‘Now give your son to me, in order that we can kill him and cook his flesh and eat it.’ But she has hidden her son.”

When the king heard what the woman said, he tore his robe to show that he was very upset. The people who were standing close to the wall were able to see that the king was wearing rough cloth underneath his robe because he was very upset.

The king exclaimed, “I wish that God will strike me dead if I do not cut off the head of Elisha today, because he is the one who has caused these terrible things to happen to us!”

So the king sent an officer to get Elisha. Before the officer arrived, Elisha was sitting in his house with some Israelite elders who were talking with him. Elisha said to them, “That murderer, the king of Israel, is sending someone here to kill me. Listen. When he arrives, shut the door and do not allow him to come in, because the king will be coming right behind that officer!”

And while he was still speaking, the king and the officer arrived. The king said, “It is Yahweh who is allowing us to have all this trouble. I will no longer wait for him to help us.”

Der schwimmende Axtkopf

Die Söhne der Propheten aber sprachen zu Eliseus: Siehe, der Ort, an welchem wir unter deiner Aufsicht wohnen, ist zu eng für uns.

Lass uns an den Jordan gehen und einen jeden Bauholz aus dem Walde holen, dass wir uns da eine Wohnstätte bauen! Er sprach: Gehet hin!

Einer von ihnen aber sagte: So komm auch du mit deinen Dienern. Er antwortete: Ich werde kommen.

Und er machte sich mit ihnen auf den Weg. Als sie nun am Jordan angekommen waren und Holz fällten,

geschah es, dass, als einer Holz fällte, das Eisen der Axt in das Wasser fiel. Er schrie auf und sprach: Ach, ach, ach, mein Herr! und ich hatte es noch dazu geliehen!

Der Mann Gottes aber sprach: Wohin ist es gefallen? Als ihm jener den Ort zeigte, schnitt er ein Holz ab und stieß damit hinein, da schwamm das Eisen.

Hierauf sprach er: Fasse es! Jener streckte seine Hand aus und fasste es.

Die geblendeten Syrer werden gefangen genommen

Während aber der König von Syrien gegen Israel Krieg führte, hielt er mit seinen Dienern Rat und sprach: An dem und dem Orte wollen wir einen Hinterhalt legen.

Der Mann Gottes sandte nun zu dem Könige von Israel und ließ ihm sagen: Hüte dich, an jenen Ort zu ziehen, denn dort liegen die Syrer im Hinterhalte.

Der König von Israel sandte also an den Ort, den ihm der Mann Gottes angegeben hatte, und besetzte ihn zuvor und war daselbst auf seiner Hut, nicht nur einmal oder zweimal.

Das Herz des Königs von Syrien ward über dieses Ereignis bestürzt und er rief seine Diener zusammen und sprach: Warum zeigt ihr mir nicht an, wer mein Verräter bei dem Könige von Israel ist?

Einer von seinen Dienern entgegnete: Nicht doch, mein Herr und König! sondern der Prophet Eliseus, welcher in Israel ist, teilt dem Könige von Israel alle Worte mit, welche du in deinem Gemache redest.

Er sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin und sehet zu, wo er ist, damit ich hinsende und ihn ergreifen lasse. Sie zeigten es ihm an und sprachen: Siehe, er ist in Dothan!

Er sandte also Rosse und Wagen und ein starkes Heer dorthin, diese kamen des Nachts an und umringten die Stadt.

Als aber der Diener des Mannes Gottes am frühen Morgen aufstand und hinausging, sah er das Heer rings um die Stadt und die Rosse und die Wagen und zeigte es ihm an und sprach: Ach, ach, ach, mein Herr! was sollen wir tun?

Er aber antwortete: Fürchte dich nicht, denn mit uns sind mehr als mit ihnen.

Alsdann betete Eliseus und sprach: Herr, öffne seine Augen, dass er sehe! Da öffnete der Herr die Augen des Dieners und er sah; siehe, der Berg rings um Eliseus der war mit feurigen Rossen und Wagen bedeckt.

Während nun die Feinde gegen ihn anrückten, flehte Eliseus zu dem Herrn und sprach: Ich bitte, schlage dieses Volk mit Blindheit! Und der Herr schlug sie, dass sie nicht sahen, nach dem Worte des Eliseus.

Eliseus aber sprach zu ihnen: Dies ist nicht der Weg und dies ist die Stadt nicht; folget mir, so werde ich euch den Mann zeigen, den ihr sucht. Sodann führte er sie nach Samaria.

Als sie nach Samaria hineingekommen waren, sprach Eliseus: Herr, öffne ihre Augen, dass sie sehen! Da öffnete der Herr ihre Augen und sie sahen, dass sie mitten in Samaria waren.

Der König von Israel aber sprach zu Eliseus, als er sie sah: Soll ich sie erschlagen, mein Vater?

Dieser antwortete: Erschlage sie nicht! Denn du hast sie nicht mit deinem Schwerte und deinem Bogen gefangen genommen, dass du sie erschlagen solltest, sondern setze ihnen Brot und Wasser vor, dass sie essen und trinken, hiernach mögen sie zu ihrem Herrn ziehen.

Man setzte ihnen also ein großes Mahl vor; und nachdem sie gegessen und getrunken hatten, entließ er sie und sie zogen zu ihrem Herrn hin. Fortan kamen keine Streifscharen von Syrien mehr in das Land Israel.

Syrien belagert Samaria in der Hungersnot

Darnach aber begab es sich, dass Benadad, der König von Syrien, sein ganzes Heer sammelte und hinaufzog und Samaria belagerte.

Und es entstand eine große Hungersnot in Samaria; es wurde so lange belagert, bis der Kopf eines Esels um achtzig Silberlinge verkauft wurde und ein Viertel Kab Taubenmist um fünf Silberlinge.

Als nun der König von Israel einmal auf der Mauer dahinschritt, rief ihn eine Frau an und sprach: Rette mich, mein Herr und König!

Er sprach: Rettet dich der Herr nicht, woher kann ich dich retten? Mit etwas von der Tenne oder von der Kelter? Sodann sprach der König zu ihr: Was willst du? Sie antwortete:

Dieses Weib hier hat zu mir gesagt: Gib deinen Sohn her, dass wir ihn heute essen, und meinen Sohn wollen wir morgen essen.

So kochten wir denn meinen Sohn und aßen ihn. Am andern Tag sprach ich zu ihr: Gib deinen Sohn her, dass wir ihn essen! Sie aber hielt ihren Sohn verborgen.

Als der König dies hörte, zerriss er seine Kleider und ging weiter auf der Mauer. Und alles Volk sah das härene Gewand, mit dem er auf bloßem Leibe angetan war.

Der König sprach: Dies tue mir Gott an und so tue er weiter, wenn der Kopf des Eliseus, des Sohnes Saphats, heute auf ihm sitzen bleibt!

Eliseus aber saß in seinem Hause und die Ältesten saßen bei ihm. Da sandte der König einen Mann voraus. Ehe aber dieser Bote noch ankam, sprach Eliseus zu den Ältesten: Wisset ihr auch, dass dieser Mörderssohn hersendet, um mir den Kopf abzuschlagen? Gebet denn acht! Wenn der Bote kommt, schließet die Türe zu und lasset ihn nicht hereinkommen; denn sehet, das Geräusch der Füße seines Herrn ist hinter ihm.

Noch redete er mit ihnen, da erschien der Bote, der zu ihm kam. Und er sprach: Siehe, so großes Unglück ist von dem Herrn; was soll ich noch von dem Herrn erwarten?
