- Kapitel 20 -

Later armies from Moab and Ammon and some soldiers from the region of Meun, near Edom, came to fight against Jehoshaphat’s army.

Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A huge army is coming to attack your army. They are coming from the region of Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. They have already come to Hazezon Tamar!” Another name for that place is Engedi.

Jehoshaphat became very afraid, so he decided to ask Yahweh what he should do. He also proclaimed that all the people of Judah should fast.

The people of Judah gathered together to request Yahweh to help them. They came to Jerusalem from every town in Judah to seek help from Yahweh.

Jehoshaphat’s Prayer

Then Jehoshaphat stood up in front of the people of Judah in front of the new courtyard of the temple,

and he prayed this: “Yahweh, the God whom our ancestors belonged to, you rule from heaven. You rule over all the kings and nations on earth. You can do anything; no one can successfully oppose you.

Our God, you drove out the people who lived in this land while your Israelite people advanced into it, and you certainly gave it to us who are descendants of Abraham, so that the land would belong to us forever.

Our ancestors lived here and built a temple at which to worship you. At that time they prayed:

‘If we experience disasters, either from our enemies attacking us, or from disease or hunger, we will assemble at this temple in your presence, for you agreed to be present here. We will plead with you because of the things we are suffering, and you will hear us and will rescue us.’

You would not allow our Israelite ancestors to enter the countries of Ammon, Moab, or Edom when they were traveling from Egypt to Canaan. So our ancestors turned away from those areas and did not attack the people there and did not destroy them. But now they are coming here to attack us.

We did good things for them. But now look at how they are repaying us by trying to drive us out from the land that you gave to our ancestors to belong to them and their descendants forever!

So, our God, please punish them. We cannot defeat the enormous army that is coming to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are depending on you to help us.”

All the men of Judah and their wives, children, and babies were standing there in the presence of Yahweh while Jehoshaphat prayed.

The Prophecy of Jahaziel

Then the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, who was son of Benaiah, who was son of Jeiel, who was son of Mattaniah. He was a descendant of Levi and a descendant of Asaph. He stood up in front of the whole group that was gathered there,

and said, “King Jehoshaphat and all you who live in Jerusalem and in other places in Judah, listen! This is what Yahweh says to you: ’Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this huge army that is coming to attack you, because it is not you who will win this battle. It is God who will win it.

Tomorrow march down toward them. They will be climbing up through the pass of Ziz north of En Gedi. You will meet them at the end of the gorge near the wilderness of Jeruel.

But you will not need to fight this battle. You soldiers from Jerusalem and other places in Judah, just take your positions, and then stand still and watch what will happen. You will see Yahweh rescue you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. March toward them tomorrow, and Yahweh will be with you.’”

Jehoshaphat prostrated himself with his face touching the ground, and all the people of Jerusalem and other places in Judah who were there knelt down to worship Yahweh.

Then some descendants of Levi who were descendants of Kohath and Korah stood up and loudly praised Yahweh, the God whom the Israelites belonged to.

The Enemies Destroy Themselves

Early the next morning the army left to go to the desert near the town of Tekoa. While they were leaving, Jehoshaphat stood up and said to them, “You people of Jerusalem and other places in Judah, listen to me! Trust in Yahweh our God; if you do that, you will be strong. Trust in what his prophets have said; if you do that, you will be successful.”

Then, after consulting with the people’s leaders, Jehoshaphat assigned some persons to sing praise to Yahweh for his greatness, and for these individuals to lead the entire army to the enemy. They were singing, “Thank Yahweh, because he faithfully loves us forever.”

While they began to sing and praise Yahweh, Yahweh caused some enemy soldiers to unexpectedly attack the others from Ammon and Moab and Edom. They defeated the others in their army.

Then the soldiers from Ammon and Moab attacked the soldiers from Edom and completely annihilated them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Edom, they slaughtered each other.

When the soldiers from Judah came to the place where they could look down over the wilderness, they looked toward that huge army of their enemies, and they saw only corpses lying on the ground. No one had survived.

So Jehoshaphat and his soldiers went to take the possessions of their enemies, and they saw that there was a lot of equipment and clothing and other valuable things; there was more than they could carry away. There were very many things, with the result that it took three days for them to collect them all.

The Joyful Return

The following day they gathered in Berakah Valley and praised Yahweh there. That is why that valley is still called Berakah, which means praise.

Then while Jehoshaphat led them, all the soldiers who were from Jerusalem and other places in Judah returned to Jerusalem. They were happy because Yahweh had enabled them to defeat their enemies.

When they arrived at Jerusalem, they went to the temple, playing harps, lutes, and trumpets.

People in the kingdoms of the nearby countries became very afraid when they heard how Yahweh had fought against the enemies of the Israelites.

Then there was peace in the kingdom that Jehoshaphat ruled, because God had enabled him to have peace throughout the country.

Summary of Jehoshaphat’s Reign

(1 Kings 22:41–50)

Jehoshaphat continued to rule Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.

He did things that were pleasing to Yahweh, like his father Asa had done, and he did not stop doing those things.

But he did not get rid of the places where idols were worshiped on the hills in the countryside, and most of the people still were not serious about obeying the God whom their ancestors had worshiped.

A record of the other things that Jehoshaphat did while he ruled, from the beginning until he died, is in the scrolls written by the prophet Jehu son of Hanani. They are also in the scroll on which was written a record of the activities of the kings of Israel.

Jehoshaphat’s Fleet Is Wrecked

Later, Jehoshaphat made a treaty with Ahaziah, the king of Israel, who was a very wicked king.

They agreed that their workers would build a fleet of ships to use to buy and sell things with other countries. After those ships were built at Ezion Geber,

Eliezer son of Dodavahu of the city of Mareshah, prophesied against Jehoshaphat. He said, “You have made an alliance with Ahaziah, who is a wicked king. Therefore, Yahweh will destroy the ships that your workers have made.” And the ships were wrecked, and were never able to sail to other countries.

Ammon, Moab und das Gebirge Seir werden besiegt

Hiernach sammelten sich die Söhne Moabs und die Söhne Ammons und mit ihnen Leute von den Ammonitern gegen Josaphat, um gegen ihn zu kämpfen.

Und es kamen Boten und meldeten es Josaphat und sprachen: Eine große Menge kommt gegen dich von den Orten jenseits des Meeres und von Syrien heran; siehe, sie stehen in Asasonthamar, das ist Engaddi.

Da erschrak Josaphat sehr und nahm seine ganze Zuflucht zum Herrn, indem er betete und ein Fasten in ganz Juda ausrufen ließ.

Und Juda versammelte sich, um den Herrn anzuflehen; auch aus ihren Städten kamen alle, ihn anzurufen.

Josaphat aber trat in die Mitte der Versammelten aus Juda und Jerusalem, im Hause des Herrn vor den neuen Vorhof,

und sprach: Herr, Gott unserer Väter! Du bist Gott im Himmel und Herrscher über alle Reiche der Völker, in deiner Hand ist Kraft und Macht und dir kann niemand widerstehen.

Hast du, unser Gott, nicht alle Bewohner dieses Landes vor deinem Volke Israel vernichtet und es den Nachkommen deines Freundes Abraham auf ewig gegeben?

Und sie nahmen darin Wohnung und bauten darin deinem Namen nein Heiligtum, indem sie sprachen:

Wenn Unglück über uns hereinbricht, das Schwert des Gerichtes, Pest oder Hungersnot, so wollen wir vor dieses Haus und vor dein Angesicht treten, den dein Name ist über dieses Haus angerufen, und wir wollen in unserer Trübsal zu dir rufen, du aber wirst uns erhören und retten.

Nun siehe, die Söhne Ammons und Moabs und das Gebirge Seir sind da, durch deren Gebiet zu ziehen du Israel nicht gestattetest, als es aus Ägypten auszog, sondern es wich ihnen aus und tötete sie nicht.

Sie tun nun das Gegenteil und suchen uns aus dem Besitze zu vertreiben, welchen du uns gegeben hast.

O unser Gott! wirst du nicht über sie Gericht halten? Denn wir haben nicht so große Kraft, dass wir dieser Menge, die über uns herfällt, widerstehen könnten. Da wir aber nicht wissen, was wir tun sollen, so bleibt uns allein übrig, unsere Augen auf dich zu richten.

Und ganz Juda stand vor dem Herrn samt den kleinen Kindern und ihren Frauen und Söhnen.

Da kam über Jahaziel, den Sohn Zacharias, des Sohnes Banajas, des Sohnes Jehiels, des Sohnes Mathanias, den Leviten von den Söhnen Asaphs, der Geist des Herrn mitten in der Versammlung

und er sprach: Merket auf, ganz Juda und ihr Bewohner von Jerusalem und du, König Josaphat! So spricht der Herr zu euch: Fürchtet euch nicht und zaget nicht vor dieser Menge, denn nicht euer ist der Kampf, sondern Gottes!

Ziehet morgen gegen sie aus, denn sie werden über die Anhöhe, Sis genannt, heranrücken, und ihr werdet sie am Ende des Tales treffen, welches gegen die Wüste Jeruel liegt.

Nicht ihr werdet es sein, die streiten, sondern haltet nur voll Vertrauen stand, und ihr werdet die Hilfe des Herrn über euch, o Juda und Jerusalem, schauen! Fürchtet euch nicht und zaget nicht, ziehet morgen gegen sie aus, und der Herr wird mit euch sein.

Da fielen Josaphat und Juda und alle Einwohner Jerusalems vor dem Herrn auf ihr Angesicht zur Erde nieder und beteten ihn an.

Alsdann begannen die Leviten von den Söhnen Kaaths und von den Söhnen Kores den Herrn, den Gott Israels, mit lauter Stimme hoch zu preisen.

Und sie machten sich am Morgen auf und zogen durch die Wüste Thekue. Als sie nun dahinzogen, trat Josaphat in ihre Mitte und sprach: Höret mich, Männer Judas und alle Bewohner Jerusalems! Vertrauet auf den Herrn, euern Gott, und ihr werdet sicher sein; glaubet seinen Propheten, und alles wird einen glücklichen Ausgang nehmen.

Und er gab dem Volke Weisung und bestellte die Sänger für den Herrn, dass sie ihm nach ihren Abteilungen Lob sangen und dem Heere vorangingen und einstimmig sprachen: Preiset den Herrn, denn seine Barmherzigkeit währet ewig!

Als sie nun begannen, das Loblied zu singen, wandte der Herr die Hinterlist jener wider sie selbst, nämlich die Hinterlist der Söhne Ammons und Moabs und des Gebirges Seir, welche ausgezogen waren, um gegen Juda zu kämpfen; und sie wurden geschlagen.

Denn die Söhne Ammons und Moabs erhoben sich wider die Bewohner des Gebirges Seir, um diese zu töten und zu vertilgen; und als sie dies vollbracht hatten, wandten sie sich einer wider den andern und fielen an den Wunden, die sie sich einander schlugen.

Als nun Juda zu der Warte gekommen war, welche gegen die Wüste gerichtet ist, sahen sie die ganze Gegend weit und breit mit Leichen bedeckt und keinen übrig, der dem Tode hätte entrinnen können.

Da kam Josaphat und sein ganzes Volk, die Getöteten zu plündern; und sie fanden unter den Leichen allerlei Gerätschaften, auch Kleider und sehr kostbare Gefäße, und sie erbeuteten so vieles, dass sie nicht alles fortbringen und in drei Tagen nicht wegschaffen konnten, so groß war die Beute.

Am vierten Tage aber versammelten sie sich im Tale des Lobpreises, denn da sie daselbst den Herrn gepriesen hatten, nannten sie diesen Ort Tal des Lobpreises, bis auf den heutigen Tag.

Hierauf kehrten alle Männer von Juda und die Bewohner von Jerusalem nach Jerusalem heim und Josaphat vor ihnen mit großer Freude, weil ihnen der Herr Freude über ihre Feinde bereitet.

Und sie zogen in Jerusalem mit Harfen und Zithern und Trompeten ein zum Hause des Herrn hin.

Auf alle Reiche der Länder aber fiel Furcht vom Herrn, da sie vernahmen, dass der Herr wider die Feinde Israels gestritten hatte.

So blieb das Reich Josaphats in Ruhe und Gott gewährte ihm Frieden ringsum.

Das Ende von Joschafats Herrschaft

(1. Könige 22,41-50)

So herrschte Josaphat über Juda; fünfunddreißig Jahre war er alt, als er König ward, und fünfundzwanzig Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem; seine Mutter hieß Azuba, eine Tochter Selahis.

Er wandelte auf dem Wege seines Vaters Asa und wich nicht davon ab, indem er tat, was vor dem Herrn wohlgefällig war.

Aber die Höhen schaffte er nicht weg und noch richtete das Volk sein Herz nicht auf den Herrn, den Gott seiner Väter.

Die übrigen Taten Josaphats aber, die früheren wie die späteren, sind in den Worten Jehus, des Sohnes Hananis, aufgeschrieben, welche er in die Bücher der Könige von Israel eingetragen hat.

Darnach schloß Josaphat, der König von Juda, Freundschaft mit Ochozias, dem König von Israel, dessen Tun sehr gottlos war.

Und er verband sich mit ihm, Schiffe zu bauen, die nach Tharsis gehen sollten, und sie bauten eine Flotte zu Asiongaber.

Da weissagte Eliezer, der Sohn Dodaus aus Maresa, gegen Josaphat also: Weil du mit Ochozias einen Bund geschlossen hast, hat der Herr deine Werke zerschlagen; und die Schiffe zerschellten und konnten nicht nach Tharsis fahren.
