- Kapitel 11 -

(1 Kings 12:20–24)

When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he gathered 180,000 of the best soldiers from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. He wanted them to fight against the northern tribes of Israel and defeat them, in order that he could rule all twelve tribes again.

But Yahweh spoke to the prophet Shemaiah and said this to him:

“Go and tell this to Solomon’s son Rehoboam, the king of Judah, and to all the Israelite people of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin:

‘Yahweh says that you must not go to fight against the people of Israel; it is as though they are your own relatives. All of you must go home. What has happened is what Yahweh wanted to happen.’” So Shemaiah went and told that to them, and they all paid attention to what Yahweh had commanded them to do; they did not attack Jeroboam and his soldiers.

Rehoboam Fortifies Judah

Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and his workers built walls around several of the cities and towns in Judah to protect them against enemy attacks.

In the area that belonged to the tribes of Judah and Benjamin they built walls around Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,

Beth Zur, Soko, Adullam,

Gath, Mareshah,

Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,

Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron.

He also appointed an army commander in each of those cities and towns, and gave them supplies of food, olive oil, and wine.

He put shields and spears in all the cities and made them well-protected. So he continued to control the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

Jeroboam Forsakes the Priests and Levites

The priests and other descendants of Levi throughout Israel supported Rehoboam.

The descendants of Levi abandoned their property and their pastureland, and they came to Jerusalem and to other places in Judah, because Jeroboam and his sons would not allow them to do the work of priests of Yahweh.

Instead, Jeroboam appointed the priests that he wanted to work at the altars he commanded to be built on the hills all around the cities, to offer sacrifices to the idols that he commanded to be made that resembled goats and calves.

And people from every tribe in Israel who wanted to worship Yahweh, the God to whom the Israelites belonged, went with the descendants of Levi to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to Yahweh, the God whom their ancestors worshiped.

They caused the kingdom of Judah to be strong, and for three years they were happy that Solomon’s son Rehoboam was the king. During that time they conducted their lives righteously as David and Solomon had done previously.

Rehoboam’s Family

Rehoboam married Mahalath. She was the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth, and her mother was Abihail, the daughter of Eliab and granddaughter of Jesse.

Rehoboam and Mahalath had three sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.

Later Rehoboam married Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, and they had four sons: Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.

Rehoboam loved Maacah more than he loved any other of his wives and slave wives. Altogether he had eighteen wives and sixty slave wives, and twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.

Rehoboam appointed his son Abijah to be the leader of his older and younger brothers, because he wanted to appoint Abijah to be the next king.

He very wisely sent some of his other sons to other cities in the areas of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, and to other cities that had walls around them. He gave them plenty of supplies and many wives.

Als Roboam aber nach Jerusalem kam, rief er das ganze Haus Juda und Benjamin zusammen, hundertachtzigtausend auserlesene Krieger, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen und die Herrschaft wieder an sich zu bringen.

Da erging des Herrn Wort an Semeja, den Mann Gottes, also:

Sage zu Roboam, dem Sohne Salomons, dem Könige von Juda, und zu ganz Israel in Juda und Benjamin:

So spricht der Herr: Ihr sollt nicht hinaufziehen, noch gegen eure Brüder kämpfen! Ein jeder kehre in sein Haus zurück, denn nach meinem Willen ist dies geschehen. Als sie das Wort des Herrn hörten, kehrten sie um und zogen nicht gegen Jeroboam.

Rehabeam befestigt die Städte

Roboam aber wohnte zu Jerusalem und baute in Juda ummauerte Städte.

Er baute nämlich Bethlehem, Etam, Thekue,

Bethsur, Socho, Odollam,

sowie Geth, Maresa, Ziph,

dazu Aduram, Lachis, Azeka,

Saraa, Ajalon und Hebron, welche in Juda und Benjamin lagen, zu festen Städten um.

Und als er sie mit Mauern umschlossen hatte, setzte er Befehlshaber in dieselben und richtete Vorratshäuser für Öl und Wein ein.

Auch machte er in jeder Stadt ein Zeughaus für die Schilde und Lanzen und befestigte jene mit der größten Sorgfalt und herrschte über Juda und Benjamin.

Priester und Leviten ziehen nach Juda

Die Priester und Leviten aber, welche in ganz Israel waren, kamen aus allen ihren Wohnsitzen zu ihm,

indem sie ihre Feldmarken und ihre Besitzungen verließen und nach Juda und Jerusalem hinüber zogen, weil Jeroboam und seine Nachkommen sie verstoßen hatten, dass sie das Priestertum des Herrn nicht ausüben sollten;

denn er bestellte sich Priester für die Höhen und für die bösen Geister und die Kälber, welche er gemacht hatte.

Aber auch aus allen Stämmen Israels kamen alle, die ihr Herz darauf richteten, den Herrn, den Gott Israels, zu suchen, nach Jerusalem, um dem Herrn, dem Gott ihrer Väter, ihre Opfer darzubringen.

So machten sie das Reich Juda stark und Roboam, den Sohn Salomons, mächtig, drei Jahre lang; denn sie wandelten nur drei Jahre auf den Wege Davids und Salomons.

Die Familie von Rehabeam

Roboam aber nahm Mahalath, eine Tochter Jerimoths, des Sohnes Davids, zur Frau, und Abihail, eine Tochter Eliabs, des Sohnes Isais;

diese gebar ihm die Söhne Jehus, Somoria und Zoom.

Nach ihr nahm er Maacha, die Tochter Absaloms; diese gebar ihm Abia, Ethai, Ziza und Salomith.

Roboam aber liebte Maacha, die Tochter Absaloms, mehr als alle seine Gemahlinnen und Nebenfrauen; denn er hatte achtzehn Frauen und sechzig Nebenfrauen genommen und zeugte achtundzwanzig Söhne und sechzig Töchter.

Und er setzte Abias, den Sohn Maachas, zum Oberhaupte, zum Fürsten über alle seine Brüder ein; denn er gedachte ihn zum Könige zu machen,

weil er weiser und angesehener war als alle seine Söhne, und verteilte diese in alle Landschaften von Juda und Benjamin und in alle ummauerten Städte, und er gab ihnen reichlichen Unterhalt und suchte viele Frauen.
