- Kapitel 6 -

(Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17)

After these things Jesus went away beyond the Sea of Galilee (of Tiberias),

and there was following Him a great multitude, because they were seeing His signs that He was doing on the ailing;

and Jesus went up to the mountain, and He was sitting with His disciples there,

and the Passover was near, the celebration of the Jews.

Jesus then having lifted up [His] eyes and having seen that a great multitude comes to Him, says to Philip, “From where will we buy loaves, that these may eat?”

And this He said, trying him, for He Himself had known what He was about to do.

Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little”;

one of His disciples—Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter—says to Him,

“There is one little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fishes, but these—what are they to so many?”

And Jesus said, “Make the men to sit down”; and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand,

and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks He distributed [them] to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished.

And when they were filled, He says to His disciples, “Gather together the broken pieces that are left over, that nothing may be lost”;

they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten.

The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is coming into the world”;

Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to seize Him by force that they may make Him king, retired again to the mountain Himself alone.

Jesus Walks on Water

(Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52)

And when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come to them,

the sea also—a great wind blowing—was being raised,

having pushed onward, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming near to the boat, and they were afraid;

and He says to them, “I AM; do not be afraid”;

they were willing then to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land to which they were going.

Jesus the Bread of Life

On the next day, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one—that into which His disciples entered—and that Jesus did not go in with His disciples into the little boat, but His disciples went away alone

(and other little boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate the bread, the LORD having given thanks),

when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor His disciples, they also entered into the boats themselves, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;

and having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when have You come here?”

Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were satisfied;

do not work for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to continuous life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for the Father sealed Him—[even] God.”

Therefore they said to Him, “What may we do that we may work the works of God?”

Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you may believe in Him whom He sent.”

Therefore they said to Him, “What sign, then, do You do, that we may see and may believe You? What do You work?

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, according as it is having been written: He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat.”

Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of Heaven;

for the bread of God is Him coming down out of Heaven, and giving life to the world.”

Therefore they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

And Jesus said to them, “I AM the bread of life; he who is coming to Me may not hunger, and he who is believing in Me may not thirst—at any time;

but I said to you that you also have seen Me, and you do not believe;

all that the Father gives to Me will come to Me; and him who is coming to Me, I will never cast outside,

because I have come down out of Heaven, not that I may do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

And this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that all that He has given to Me, I may lose none of it, but may raise it up in the last day;

and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who is beholding the Son, and is believing in Him, may have continuous life, and I will raise him up in the last day.”

The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at Him, because He said, “I AM the bread that came down out of Heaven”;

and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? How then does this One say, I have come down out of Heaven?”

Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, “Do not murmur with one another;

no one is able to come to Me if the Father who sent Me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;

it is having been written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught of God; everyone, therefore, who heard from the Father, and learned, comes to Me;

not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God, He has seen the Father.

Truly, truly, I say to you, he who is believing in Me has continuous life;

I AM the bread of life;

your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died;

this is the bread that is coming down out of Heaven, that anyone may eat of it, and not die.

I AM the living bread that came down out of Heaven; if anyone may eat of this bread he will live—throughout the age; and the bread also that I will give is My flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.”

The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, “How is this One able to give us [His] flesh to eat?”

Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if you may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves;

he who is eating My flesh, and is drinking My blood, has continuous life, and I will raise him up in the last day;

for My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink;

he who is eating My flesh, and is drinking My blood, remains in Me, and I in him.

According as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating Me, even that one will live because of Me;

this is the bread that came down out of Heaven; not as your fathers ate the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread will live—throughout the age.”

Many Disciples Turn Back

(Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33)

He said these things in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;

many, therefore, of His disciples having heard, said, “This word is hard; who is able to hear it?”

And Jesus having known in Himself that His disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, “Does this stumble you?

If then you may behold the Son of Man going up where He was before?

It is the Spirit that is giving life; the flesh does not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;

but there are certain of you who do not believe”; for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver Him up,

and He said, “Because of this I have said to you, No one is able to come to Me if it may not have been given him from My Father.”

From this [time] many of His disciples went away backward, and were no longer walking with Him,

Peter’s Confession of Faith

(Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20)

Jesus, therefore, said to the Twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?”

Simon Peter, therefore, answered Him, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have sayings of continuous life;

and we have believed, and we have known, that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you—the Twelve? And of you—one is a devil.”

And He spoke of Judas, [son] of Simon Iscariot, for he was about to deliver Him up, being one of the Twelve.

Die Speisung der Fünftausend

(Matthäus 14,13-21; Markus 6,30-44; Lukas 9,10-17)

Hiernach fuhr Jesus über das Meer von Galiläa, das ist von Tiberias.

Und es folgte ihm eine große Menge Volkes nach, weil sie die Wunder sahen, welche er an den Kranken tat.

Da ging Jesus auf den Berg, und setzte sich daselbst mit seinen Jüngern nieder.

Es war aber das Osterfest der Juden nahe.

Als nun Jesus die Augen aufhob, und sah, dass eine sehr große Menge Volkes zu ihm kam, sprach er zu Philippus: Woher werden wir Brot kaufen, dass diese zu essen haben?

Das sagte er aber, um ihn zu prüfen; denn er selbst wusste wohl, was er tun würde.

Philippus antwortete ihm: Brot für zweihundert Denare ist nicht hinreichend für sie, dass jeder nur etwas Weniges bekomme.

Da sprach einer von seinen Jüngern, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, zu ihm:

Es ist ein Knabe hier, welcher fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische hat; allein was ist das auf so viele?

Jesus aber sprach: Lasset die Leute sich niedersetzen! Es war aber viel Gras an dem Orte. Da ließen sich die Männer nieder, gegen fünftausend an der Zahl.

Jesus aber nahm die Brote, und nachdem er Dank gesagt hatte, teilte er sie unter die aus, welche sich niedergesetzt hatten; desgleichen auch von den Fischen, so viel sie wollten.

Als sie aber satt geworden waren, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übriggebliebenen Stücke, damit sie nicht zu Grunde gehen!

Sie sammelten also, und füllten zwölf Körbe mit den Stücken an, welche von den fünf Gerstenbroten denen übriggeblieben waren, die gegessen hatten.

Als nun diese Leute das Wunder sahen, welches Jesus gewirkt hatte, sprachen sie: Dieser ist wahrhaftig der Prophet, welcher in die Welt kommen soll!

Jesus wandelt auf dem Meer

Als aber Jesus erkannte, dass sie kommen würden, um ihn mit Gewalt zum Könige zu machen, zog er sich wieder auf den Berg zurück, allein.

(Matthäus 14,22-33; Markus 6,45-52)

Da es nun Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger hinab an das Meer.

Und sie stiegen in das Schiff, und fuhren über das Meer nach Kapharnaum. Es war schon dunkel geworden, und Jesus war nicht zu ihnen gekommen.

Das Meer aber wogte, weil ein starker Wind wehte.

Als sie nun gegen fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Stadien gerudert waren, sahen sie Jesus auf dem Meere wandeln und dem Schiffe nahe kommen; und sie fürchteten sich.

Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin es, fürchtet euch nicht!

Da wollten sie ihn in das Schiff aufnehmen; und alsbald war das Schiff am Lande, nach welchem sie hinfuhren.

Das Brot vom Himmel

Am andern Tage erfuhr das Volk, welches jenseits des Meeres stand, dass kein anderes Schiff daselbst war als das eine, und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Schiff gestiegen, sondern seine Jünger allein abgefahren waren.

Andere Schiffe aber kamen herüber von Tiberias nahe an den Ort, wo sie das Brot gegessen hatten, nachdem der Herr Dank gesagt.

Als nun das Volk sah, dass Jesus nicht da sei, noch auch seine Jünger, stiegen sie in die Schiffe, und kamen nach Kapharnaum, Jesus suchend.

Und da sie ihn jenseits des Meeres gefunden hatten, sprachen sie zu ihm: Meister! wann bist du hierher gekommen?

Jesus antwortete ihnen, und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ihr suchet mich nicht, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habet, und gesättigt worden seid!

Bemühet euch nicht um vergängliche Speise, sondern um jene Speise, welche zum ewigen Leben bleibet, die euch der Menschensohn geben wird. Denn diesen hat Gott der Vater mit seinem Siegel bezeichnet.

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun, um die Werke Gottes zu wirken?

Jesus antwortete, und sprach zu ihnen: Dieses ist das Wort Gottes, dass ihr an den glaubet, welchen er gesandt hat.

Sie sprachen zu ihm: Welches Zeichen also tust du, dass wir es sehen, und dir glauben? Was wirkest du?

Unsere Väter haben das Manna in der Wüste gegessen, wie geschrieben steht: Brot vom Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen.

Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Nicht Moses hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel!

Denn das Brot Gottes ist dasjenige, welches vom Himmel herabkommt, und der Welt das Leben gibt!

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, immerdar gib uns dieses Brot!

Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens; wer zu mir kommt, wird nicht hungern, und wer an mich glaubt, wird nimmermehr dürsten.

Aber ich habe es euch gesagt, auch habet ihr mich gesehen, und glaubet doch nicht.

Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, wird zu mir kommen, und den, welcher zu mir kommt, werde ich nicht hinausstoßen;

denn ich bin vom Himmel herabgekommen, nicht damit ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.

Das ist aber der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, des Vaters, dass ich nichts von dem, was er mir gegeben hat, verliere, sondern dass ich es auferwecke am jüngsten Tage.

Das ist aber der Wille meines Vaters, der mich gesandt hat, dass jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, das ewige Leben habe; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am jüngsten Tage.

Abgelehnt von den Seinen

Da murrten die Juden über ihn, dass er gesagt hatte: Ich bin das lebendige Brot, der ich vom Himmel herabgekommen bin,

und sie sagten: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, der Sohn Josephs, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie also sagt dieser: ich bin vom Himmel herabgestiegen?

Da antwortete Jesus, und sprach zu ihnen: Murret nicht untereinander!

Niemand kann zu mir kommen, wenn der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, ihn nicht zieht; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am jüngsten Tage.

Es steht geschrieben in den Propheten: „Und sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt werden.“ Jeder, der von dem Vater gehört und gelernt hat, kommt zu mir.

Nicht dass jemand den Vater gesehen hat, außer derjenige, welcher von Gott ist, dieser hat den Vater gesehen.

Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wer an mich glaubt, hat das ewige Leben!

Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.

Eure Väter haben das Manna in der Wüste gegessen, und sind gestorben.

Dieses ist das Brot, welches vom Himmel herabkommt, auf dass derjenige, der davon isst, nicht sterbe.

Ich bin das lebendige Brot, der ich vom Himmel herabgekommen bin.

Wenn jemand von diesem Brote isst, so wird er leben in Ewigkeit; und das Brot, welches ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch für das Leben der Welt.

Da stritten die Juden untereinander, und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?

Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr das Fleisch des Menschensohnes nicht essen und sein Blut nicht trinken werdet, so werdet ihr das Leben nicht in euch haben!

Wer mein Fleisch isst, und mein Blut trinkt, der hat das ewige Leben; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am jüngsten Tage.

Denn mein Fleisch ist wahrhaft eine Speise, und mein Blut ist wahrhaft ein Trank.

Wer mein Fleisch isst, und mein Blut trinkt, bleibt in mir, und ich in ihm.

Gleichwie mich der lebendige Vater gesandt hat, und ich lebe um des Vaters willen, so wird auch, wer mich isst, leben um meinetwillen.

(Matthäus 8,18-22; Lukas 9,57-62; Lukas 14,25-33)

Dies ist das Brot, welches vom Himmel herabgekommen ist, nicht so, wie eure Väter das Manna gegessen haben und gestorben sind. Wer dieses Brot isst, wird ewig leben.

Viele Jünger wenden sich ab

Dieses sagte er in der Synagoge lehrend, in Kapharnaum.

Viele nun von seinen Jüngern, welche es hörten, fragten: Diese Rede ist hart, und wer kann sie hören?

Weil aber Jesus bei sich selbst wusste, dass seine Jünger darüber murrten, sagte er zu ihnen: Gibt euch dies Anstoß?

Wenn ihr nun den Menschensohn dahin auffahren sehet, wo er zuvor war? -

Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht; das Fleisch nützet nichts. Die Worte, welche ich zu euch geredet habe, sind Geist und Leben.

Doch es sind unter euch etliche, welche nicht glauben. Denn von Anfang an wusste Jesus, welche es seien, die nicht glaubten, und wer ihn verraten würde.

Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, wenn es ihm nicht von meinem Vater gegeben ist.

(Matthäus 16,13-20; Markus 8,27-30; Lukas 9,18-20)

Von der Zeit an traten viele von seinen Jüngern zurück, und wandelten nicht mehr mit ihm.

Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollet etwa auch ihr weggehen?

Simon Petrus antwortete ihm: Herr! Zu wem werden wir gehen? Du hast Worte des ewigen Lebens!

Und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt, dass du Christus, der Sohn Gottes bist.

Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch Zwölfe auserwählet, und von euch ist einer ein Teufel?

Er redete aber von Judas Iskariot, Simons Sohne; denn dieser sollte ihn hernach verraten; obwohl er einer aus den Zwölfen war.
