- Kapitel 3 -

A blessing of wisdom

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.(a)

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.(b)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord , and depart from evil.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.(c)

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord ; neither be weary of his correction:

For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Wisdom is more valuable than riches

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.(e)

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.(f)

By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

The ways of the wise

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.(g)

Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.(h)

Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.(i)

For the froward is abomination to the Lord : but his secret is with the righteous.

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.

Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.(j)

Ein Segen der Weisheit

Mein Sohn! vergiss meine Weisung nicht und dein Herz bewahre meine Gebote,

denn lange Lebensdauer und Jahre des Lebens und Frieden werden sie dir bringen.

Barmherzigkeit und Wahrheit mögen dich nicht verlassen. Lege sie dir um den Hals und schreibe sie auf die Tafel deines Herzens,

so wirst du Gnade und gute Lehren finden bei Gott und den Menschen.

Vertraue auf den Herrn von ganzem Herzen und verlass dich nicht auf deine Klugheit.

Auf allen deinen Wegen gedenke an ihn, so wird er deine Schritte recht leiten.

Sei nicht weise in deinen eigenen Augen, fürchte Gott und halte dich vom Bösen fern.

Denn das wird deinem Leibe Heilung sein und deinen Gebeinen Erquickung.

Ehre den Herrn von deiner Habe und gib ihm von den Erstlingen aller deiner Früchte,

so werden deine Speicher sich mit Überfluss füllen und deine Keltern von Wein überströmen.

Die Zucht des Herrn, mein Sohn! weise nicht von dir und lass den Mut nicht sinken, wenn du von ihm gezüchtigt wirst;

denn wen der Herr liebt, züchtigt er und hat sein Wohlgefallen an ihm, wie ein Vater an dem Sohne.

Weisheit ist wertvoller als Reichtum

Glückselig der Mensch, der die Weisheit findet und Klugheit in Fülle besitzt!

Denn wertvoller ist es, sie zu gewinnen als Silber zu erwerben, und ihre Früchte sind besser als das beste und feinste Gold.

Kostbarer ist sie als alle Reichtümer, und alles, was man wünschen kann, vermag mit ihr nicht verglichen zu werden.

Langes Leben ist in ihrer Rechten und in ihrer Linken Reichtum und Ehre.

Ihre Wege sind Wege der Wonne und alle ihre Pfade sind Frieden.

Sie ist ein Baum des Lebens für die, welche sie erfassen; und wer sie festhält, ist glückselig.

Der Herr hat die Erde in Weisheit gegründet und die Himmel in Klugheit festgestellt.

Durch seine Weisheit brachen die Abgründe hervor und die Wolken rinnen aus Tau zusammen.

Die Wege der Weisen

Mein Sohn! lass dies nicht aus deinen Augen weichen, bewahre Gesetz und guten Rat,

so werden sie deiner Seele das Leben sein und Anmut deinem Halse.

Dann wirst du auf deinem Wege sicher wandeln und dein Fuß wird nicht anstoßen.

Wenn du dich niederlegst, hast du nicht zu bangen, und ruhst du, so wird dein Schlaf sanft sein.

nicht musst du beben vor plötzlichem Schrecknis noch vor dem Überfalle der Gewalt der Gottlosen,

Denn der Herr wird dir zur Seite sein und deinen Fuß behüten, dass du nicht gefangen werdest.

Hindere niemand, Gutes zu tun, der es kann, und kannst du es, so tue selbst Gutes.

Sage nicht zu deinem Nächsten: Gehe fort und komme wieder, morgen will ich dir geben! wenn du sogleich geben kannst.

Sinne nicht auf Böses wider deinen Nächsten, während er sein Vertrauen auf dich setzt.

Zanke mit keinem Menschen ohne Ursache, wenn er dir kein Leid getan hat.

Sei nicht neidisch auf einen ungerechten Menschen und folge seinen Wegen nicht,

denn jeder Spötter ist dem Herrn ein Greuel, aber mit den Rechtschaffenen verkehrt er vertraulich.

Die Armut kommt durch den Herrn auf das Haus des Gottlosen, aber die Wohnungen der Gerechten werden gesegnet.

Er spottet der Spötter, aber den Sanftmütigen gibt er Gnade.

Die Weisen werden Ehren erlangen, aber die Erhebung der Toren endet in Schande.
