- Kapitel 4 -

Esther agrees to help the Jews

When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

And came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.(a)

So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.(b)

Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.(c)

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king’s gate.

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?(d)

Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.(e)

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.(f)

Esther willigt ein, den Juden zu helfen

Als Mardochäus dies erfahren hatte, zerriss er seine Kleider, legte ein Trauergewand an, streute Asche auf sein Haupt und schrie mit lauter Stimme auf der Straße mitten in der Stadt, die Bitterkeit seines Herzens kundgebend,

und kam so weherufend bis vor die Pforten des Palastes; denn den Hof des Königs zu betreten war niemanden erlaubt, der mit einem Trauergewande bekleidet war.

Auch in allen Ländern, Städten und Orten, zu denen der grausame Befehl des Könige hingelangte, war bei den Juden großes Klagen und Fasten und Weherufen und Weinen und viele wählten Sack und Asche statt des Lagers.

Da kamen die Diener der Esther und ihre Kämmerlinge und teilten es ihr mit. Als sie es hörte, erschrak sie sehr und sandte ein Kleid, das sie ihm anlegen sollten, nachdem er das Trauerkleid ausgezogen; aber er wollte es nicht annehmen.

Sie berief also den Kämmerling Athach, den der König ihr zu ihrem Dienste gegeben hatte, und befahl ihm, zu Mardochäus zu gehen, um von ihm in Erfahrung zu bringen, warum er dies tue.

Athach ging hinaus und kam zu Mardochäus, der auf der Straße der Stadt vor dem Tore des Palastes stand.

Dieser teilte ihm alles mit, was sich zugetragen, wie Aman verheißen habe, für die Ermordung der Juden Silber in die Schatzkammer des Königs zu liefern.

Dazu gab er ihm eine Abschrift des Erlasses, der in Susan angeschlagen war, um sie der Königin zu zeigen und in sie zu dringen, dass sie zu dem Könige gehen und ihn für ihr Volk um Gnade bitten möchte.

Athach kam zurück und berichtete Esther alles, was Mardochäus gesagt hatte.

Sie antwortete und befahl ihm, dem Mardochäus zu sagen:

Alle Diener des Königs und alle Länder, welche unter seiner Herrschaft stehen, wissen, dass jeder, es sei Mann oder Frau, der den inneren Hof des Königs betritt, ohne gerufen zu sein, ohne Verzug alsbald des Todes ist; es sei denn, dass der König zum Zeichen der Gnade sein goldenes Zepter gegen ihn ausstreckt, alsdann bleibt er am Leben. Wie werde ich also zu dem Könige gehen können, da ich schon dreißig Tage nicht zu ihm gerufen worden bin?

Als Mardochäus dies hörte,

ließ er Esther wiederum sagen: Glaube nicht, dass du allein vor allen Juden ein Leben retten werdest, weil du im Hause des Königs bist;

denn wenn du jetzt schweigst, wird den Juden durch andere Umstände Befreiung werden, du aber wirst samt deines Vaters Haus umkommen. Und wer weiß, ob du nicht darum zur königlichen Würde gelangt bist, um in solcher Zeit bereit zu sein?

Da ließ Esther dem Mardochäus diese Worte erwidern:

Gehe hin, versammle alle Juden in Susan, die du findest, und betet für mich. Esset und trinket drei Tage und drei Nächte nicht, auch ich will mit meinen Dienerinnen ebenso fasten und dann will ich zu dem Könige gehen, obwohl wider das Gesetz, ungerufen und mich der Todesgefahr preisgeben.

Da ging Mardochäus von dannen und tat alles, was ihm Esther aufgetragen hatte.
