- Kapitel 6 -

Now Iericho was shut vp, and closed, because of the children of Israel: none might go out nor enter in.

And the Lord saide vnto Ioshua, Behold, I haue giuen into thine hand Iericho and the King thereof, and the strong men of warre.

All ye therefore that be men of warre, shall compasse the citie, in going round about the citie once: thus shall you doe sixe dayes:

And seuen Priests shall beare seuen trumpets of rams hornes before the Arke: and the seuenth day ye shall compasse the citie seuen times, and the Priests shall blow with the trumpets.

And when they make a long blast with the rams horne, and ye heare the sound of the trumpet, al the people shall shoute with a great shoute: then shall the wall of the citie fall downe flat, and the people shall ascend vp, euery man streight before him.

Then, Ioshua the sonne of Nun called the Priests and said vnto them, Take vp the Arke of the couenant, and let seuen Priests beare seuen trumpets of rams hornes before the Arke of the Lord.

But he said vnto the people, Goe and compasse the citie: and let him that is armed, go forth before the Arke of the Lord.

And when Ioshua had spoken vnto the people, the seuen Priestes bare the seuen trumpets of rams hornes, and went foorth before the Arke of the Lord, and blew with the trumpets, and the Arke of the couenant of ye Lord followed them.

And the men of armes went before the Priestes, that blewe the trumpets: then the gathering hoste came after the Arke, as they went and blewe the trumpets.

(Nowe Ioshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall nor shout, neither make any noyse with your voyce, neither shall a worde proceede out of your mouth, vntill the day that I say vnto you, Shout, then shall ye shoute)

So the Arke of the Lord compassed the citie, and went about it once: then they returned into the hoaste, and lodged in the campe.

And Ioshua rose early in the morning, and the Priestes bare the Arke of the Lord:

Also seuen Priests bare seuen trumpets of rams hornes, and went before the Arke of the Lord, and going blewe with the trumpets: and the men of armes went before them, but the gathering hoste came after the Arke of the Lord, as they went and blewe the trumpets.

And the second day they compassed the citie once, and returned into the host: thus they did sixe dayes.

And when the seuenth day came, they rose early, euen with the dawning of the day, and compassed the citie after ye same maner seuen times: only that day they compassed the citie seuen times.

And when the Priests had blowen ye trumpets the seuenth time, Ioshua said vnto ye people, Shoute: for the Lord hath giuen you the citie.

And the citie shalbe an execrable thing, both it, and all that are therein, vnto the Lord: onely Rahab the harlot shall liue, shee, and all that are with her in the house: for shee hid the messengers that we sent.

Notwithstanding, be ye ware of the execrable thing, lest ye make your selues execrable, and in taking of the execrable thing, make also the hoste of Israel execrable, and trouble it.

But all siluer, and gold, and vessels of brasse, and yron shalbe consecrate vnto the Lord, and shall come into the Lordes treasury.

So the people shouted, whe they had blowen trumpets: for when the people had heard the sound of the trumpet, they shouted with a great shoute: and the wall fel downe flat: so the people went vp into the citie, euery man streight before him: and they tooke the citie.

And they vtterly destroyed all that was in the citie, both man and woman, yong, and olde, and oxe, and sheepe, and asse, with the edge of the sword.

But Ioshua had said vnto the two men that had spied out the countrey, Go into the harlots house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware to her.

So the yong men that were spies, went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that shee had: also they brought out all her familie, and put them without the host of Israel.

After they burnt the citie with fire, and all that was therein: onely the siluer and the gold, and the vessels of brasse and yron, they put vnto the treasure of the house of the Lord.

So Ioshua saued Rahab the harlot, and her fathers houshold, and all that shee had; and shee dwelt in Israel euen vnto this day, because shee had hid the messengers, which Ioshua sent to spie out Iericho.

And Ioshua sware at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before ye Lord, that riseth vp, and buildeth this citie Iericho: hee shall lay the foundation thereof in his eldest sonne, and in his yongest sonne shall hee set vp the gates of it.

So the Lord was with Ioshua, and he was famous through all the world.

Die Zerstörung von Jericho

Jericho aber war verschlossen und verwahrt aus Furcht vor den Söhnen Israels, und niemand wagte aus- oder einzugehen.

Da sprach der Herr zu Josue: Siehe, ich habe Jericho und dessen König und alle streitbaren Männer in deine Hand gegeben.

Ziehet einmal des Tages um die Stadt, ihr sämtlichen Kriegsmänner, und tuet dies sechs Tage hindurch.

Am siebenten Tage aber sollen die Priester sieben Posaunen nehmen, wie man im Jubeljahre gebraucht, und sollen vor der Lade des Bundes einhergehen, und ihr sollt siebenmal um die Stadt ziehen, während die Priester in die Posaunen stoßen.

Wenn dann der Ton der Trompete länger und schneidender erschallt, soll das ganze Volk, sobald derselbe an sein Ohr dringt, ein lautes Geschrei erheben; alsdann werden die Mauern der Stadt bis auf den Grund zusammenstürzen, und ein jeder soll an der Stelle eindringen, wo er steht.

Da berief Josue, der Sohn Nuns, die Priester und sprach zu ihnen: Nehmet die Lade des Bundes, und sieben andere Priester sollen sieben Jubelposaunen nehmen und vor der Lade des Herrn hergehen.

Dann sprach er zu dem Volke: Gehet hin und ziehet bewaffnet um die Stadt, vor der Lade des Herrn einher!

Als nun Josue diese Worte geendet hatte, bliesen die sieben Priester mit sieben Posaunen vor der Lade des Bundes des Herrn her,

und das ganze Heer zog gewaffnet voran, während der übrige Hause der Lade folgte, und alles hallte vom Klange der Posaunen wieder.

Josue aber hatte dem Volke geboten und gesagt: Erhebet kein Geschrei und lasset eure Stimme nicht hören, ja, kein einziges Wort komme aus eurem Munde, bis der Tag da ist, an dem ich euch sage: Rufet laut und erhebet ein Geschrei!

Die Lade des Herrn zog also einmal des Tages um die Stadt, und kehrte hierauf in das Lager zurück, und blieb daselbst.

Und Josue stand des Nachts auf, die Priester aber trugen die Lade des Herrn,

und sieben von ihnen sieben Posaunen, wie sie im Jubeljahre gebraucht werden; diese zogen vor der Lade des Herrn einher und bliesen im Gehen; und das gewaffnete Volk schritt vor ihnen, das übrige Volk aber folgte der Lade, indem man in die Posaunen stieß.

So zogen sie auch am zweiten Tage einmal um die Stadt und kehrten dann in das Lager zurück. Dasselbe taten sie sechs Tage hindurch.

Am siebenten Tage aber brachen sie am frühen Morgen auf und zogen, wie geboten war, siebenmal um die Stadt.

Als nun die Priester bei dem siebenten Umgange in die Posaunen stießen, sprach Josue zu ganz Israel: Erhebet ein Geschrei! Denn der Herr hat euch die Stadt preisgegeben.

Diese Stadt sei im Banne und alles, was darin ist, gehöre dem Herrn; nur die Buhlerin Rahab soll samt allen, die bei ihr im Hause sind, am Leben bleiben, denn sie hat die Boten, welche wir aussandten, verborgen.

Ihr aber hütet euch, etwas von dem zu berühren, was verboten ist, und euch zu versündigen, dass nicht das ganze Heerlager Israels in Schuld und Verwirrung gerate.

Alles aber, was an Gold und Silber, ehernen und eisernen Geräten da ist, soll dem Herrn geheiligt sein und in seinen Schatz niedergelegt werden.

Als nun das gesamte Volk ein Geschrei erhob, und die Trompeten erklangen, und das Geschrei und der Klang an die Ohren des Volkes drang, stürzten die Mauern alsbald zusammen; und ein jeder stieg an der Stelle hinauf, an der er gerade stand; und sie nahmen die Stadt ein

und töteten alles, was in derselben war, Mann und Weib, Kind und Greis. Auch die Rinder, und Schafe und Esel erschlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.

Zu den beiden Männern aber, welche als Kundschafter gesandt worden waren, sprach Josue: Gehet in das Haus der Buhlerin, und führet sie und alles, was ihr gehört, heraus, wie ihr es mit einem Eide zugeschworen habt.

Da gingen die Jünglinge hinein, führten Rahab, ihre Eltern, und ihre Brüder samt allem Hausrat und ihren Angehörigen heraus, und ließen sie außerhalb des Lagers Israels bleiben.

Die Stadt aber und alles, was darin war, brannten sie nieder; nur das Gold und Silber, und die ehernen und eisernen Gerätschaften weihten sie dem Schatze des Herrn.

Die Buhlerin Rahab aber und die Familie ihres Vaters, und alles, was sie hatte, ließ Josue am Leben, und so blieben sie bis auf den heutigen Tag unter Israel wohnen; weil sie die Boten verborgen hatte, welche er ausgesandt, um Jericho auszukundschaften. Zu jener Zeit sprach Josue diesen Fluch aus:

Verflucht sei vor dem Herrn, wer die Stadt Jericho wieder herstellt und aufbaut! Es werde sein Erstgeborner dahingerafft, wenn er ihren Grund legt, und sein jüngstes Kind, wenn er ihre Tore einsetzt.

Der Herr aber war mit Josue und sein Name ward kund im ganzen Lande.
