- Kapitel 2 -

(Hebrews 11:30–31)

Then Ioshua the sonne of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spie secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and also Iericho: and they went, and came into an harlots house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

Then report was made to the King of Iericho, saying, Beholde, there came men hither to night, of the children of Israel, to spie out the countrey.

And the King of Iericho sent vnto Rahab, saying, Bring foorth the men that are come to thee, and which are entred into thine house: for they be come to search out all the land.

(But ye woman had taken the two men, and hid them) Therefore saide she thus, There came men vnto me, but I wist not whence they were.

And when they shut the gate in the darke, the men went out, whither the men went I wote not: follow ye after them quickly, for ye shall ouertake them.

(But she had brought them vp to the roofe of the house, and hidde them with the stalkes of flaxe, which she had spread abroad vpon the roofe)

And certaine men pursued after them, the way to Iorden, vnto the foordes, and as soone as they which pursued after them, were gone out, they shut the gate.

The Promise to Rahab

And before they were a sleepe, she came vp vnto them vpon the roofe,

And saide vnto the men, I knowe that the Lord hath giuen you the land, and that the feare of you is fallen vpon vs, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

For we haue heard, howe the Lord dried vp the water of the redde Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did vnto the two Kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Iorden, vnto Sihon and to Og, whom ye vtterly destroyed:

And when wee heard it, our heartes did faint, and there remained no more courage in any because of you: for the Lord your God, he is the God in heauen aboue, and in earth beneath.

Now therefore, I pray you, sweare vnto me by the Lord; that as I haue shewed you mercie, ye will also shewe mercie vnto my fathers house, and giue me a true token,

And that yee will saue aliue my father and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they haue: and that yee will deliuer our soules from death.

And the men answered her, Our life for you to die, if ye vtter not this our businesse: and when the Lord hath giuen vs the lande, we will deale mercifully and truely with thee.

Then she let them downe by a corde thorowe the windowe: for her house was vpon the towne wall, and she dwelt vpon the wall.

And she said vnto them, Goe you into the mountaine, least the pursuers meete with you, and hide your selues there three dayes, vntill the pursuers be returned: then afterwarde may yee goe your way.

And the men said vnto her, We will be blamelesse of this thine othe, which thou hast made vs sweare.

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this cord of red threde in the window, whereby thou lettest vs downe, and thou shalt bring thy father and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy fathers houshold home to thee.

And whosoeuer then doeth goe out at the doores of thine house into the streete, his blood shalbe vpon his head, and we will be giltlesse: but whosoeuer shall be with thee in the house, his blood shalbe on our head, if any hande touch him:

And if thou vtter this our matter, we will be quite of thine othe, which thou hast made vs sweare.

And she answered, According vnto your wordes, so be it: then she sent them away, and they departed, and she bound the red cord in ye window.

And they departed, and came into the mountaine, and there abode three dayes, vntil the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but founde them not.

So the two men returned, and descended from the mountaine, and passed ouer, and came to Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and tolde him all things that came vnto them.

Also they saide vnto Ioshua, Surely the Lord hath deliuered into our handes all the lande: for euen all the inhabitants of the countrey faint because of vs.

Rahab versteckt die Spione

(Hebräer 11,30-31)

Und Josue, der Sohn Nuns, sandte im Geheimen zwei Männer als Kundschafter von Setim aus und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin und besichtiget das Land und die Stadt Jericho! Diese zogen hin und traten in das Haus einer Buhlerin, mit Namen Rahab, ein und blieben bei ihr zu Nacht.

Da wurde dem Könige von Jericho gemeldet und gesagt: Siehe, es sind Männer von den Söhnen Israels des Nachts hierher gekommen, um das Land auszukundschaften.

Da sandte der König von Jericho zu Rahab und ließ ihr sagen: Führe die Männer heraus, die zu dir gekommen und in dein Haus eingekehrt sind; denn sie sind Kundschafter und sind gekommen, das ganze Land auszuspähen.

das Weib aber nahm die Männer, verbarg sie und sprach: Ich gestehe, sie sind zu mir gekommen, aber ich wusste nicht, woher sie waren;

und als bei Anbruch der Dunkelheit das Tor geschlossen ward, gingen auch sie zur gleichen Zeit hinaus, und ich weiß nicht, wohin sie gegangen sind; setzet ihnen eilig nach, so werdet ihr sie einholen.

Die hatte aber die Männer auf das Dach ihres Hauses steigen lassen und mit Flachsstengeln bedeckt, welche daselbst waren.

Die ausgesandten Männer aber verfolgten sie auf dem Wege, der zur Furt des Jordans führt; und nachdem sie hinausgegangen waren, wurde das Tor alsbald geschlossen.

Noch waren die beiden, welche sich verborgen hielten, nicht eingeschlafen, siehe, da stieg das Weib zu ihnen hinauf und sprach:

Ich weiß, dass der Herr euch das Land überliefert hat; denn Schrecken vor euch hat uns befallen und alle Bewohner des Landes sind verzagt geworden.

Wir haben gehört, dass der Herr das Wasser des roten Meeres, als ihr in dasselbe hineinschrittet, vertrocknen ließ, damals als ihr aus Ägypten auszoget; und was ihr den beiden Königen der Amorrhiter, die jenseits des Jordans waren, getan habt, dem Sehon und Og, welche ihr getötet habt.

Als wir dies hörten, erschraken wir, und unser Herz wurde verzagt, und der Mut entfiel uns bei eurem Einzuge; denn der Herr, euer Gott, ist Gott im Himmel droben und auf Erden hienieden.

So schwöret mir nun bei dem Herrn, dass, wie ich an euch Barmherzigkeit geübt habe, auch ihr an dem Hause meines Vaters tun wollt; und gebet mir ein zuverlässiges Zeichen,

dass ihr meinen Vater und meine Mutter, und meine Brüder, und meine Schwestern, und alles, was ihnen zugehört, retten und uns vor dem Tode bewahren wollt.

da antworteten sie ihr: Unsere Seele soll an eurer Stelle des Todes sein, wofern du uns indes nicht verrätst; und wenn uns der Herr das Land überliefert, so werden wir dir Barmherzigkeit und Treue erweisen.

Da ließ sie dieselben an einem Seile durch das Fenster hinab, denn ihr Haus lag an der Mauer.

Und sie sprach zu ihnen: Steiget auf das Gebirge hinauf, damit sie bei ihrer Rückkehr nicht etwa auf euch treffen; haltet euch daselbst drei Tage lang verborgen, bis sie zurückgekehrt sind, und alsdann ziehet eures Weges.

Da sprachen sie zu ihr: Wir werden von diesem Eide, mit dem du uns beschworen hast, frei sein,

wenn wir in das Land kommen und diese rote Schnur zum Zeichen dienen wird; und du sie an das Fenster, durch welches du uns hinabgelassen, gebunden, und deinen Vater, deine Mutter, deine Brüder und deine ganze Verwandtschaft in deinem Hause versammelt hast.

Wer dann zur Tür deines Hauses hinausgeht, dessen Blut sei auf seinem Haupte, und wir werden unschuldig sein. Das Blut aller aber, welche bei dir im Hause sein werden, soll auf unser Haupt kommen, wenn sie jemand antastet.

Wenn du uns aber verraten und diese Sache wolltest bekannt werden lassen, so werden wir von dem Eide, mit dem du uns beschworen hast, frei sein.

Sie antwortete: Wie ihr gesagt habt, so sei es; und sie ließ sie fortziehen und band die rote Schnur an das Fenster.

Da zogen sie von dannen, und kamen auf das Gebirge, und blieben daselbst drei Tage, bis die, welche sie verfolgten, zurückkehrten; denn sie suchten sie auf allen Wegen und fanden sie nicht.

Als diese nun in die Stadt hineingegangen waren, kehrten die Kundschafter zurück, stiegen vom Gebirge herab, setzten über den Jordan, und kamen zu Josue, dem Sohne Nuns, und erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war,

und sprachen: Der Herr hat dies ganze Land in unsere Hände überliefert und alle seine Bewohner sind von Furcht bestürzt.
