- Kapitel 10 -

Now when Adoni-zedek King of Ierusalem had heard how Ioshua had taken Ai and had destroyed it, (for as he had done to Iericho and to the King thereof, so he had done to Ai and to the King thereof) and howe the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,

Then they feared exceedingly: for Gibeon was a great citie, as one of the royall cities: for it was greater then Ai, and all the men thereof were mightie.

Wherefore Adoni-zedek King of Ierusalem sent vnto Hoham King of Hebron, and vnto Piram King of Iarmuth, and vnto Iapia King of Lachish, and vnto Debir King of Eglon, saying,

Come vp vnto me, and helpe me, that we may smite Gibeon: for they haue made peace with Ioshua and with the children of Israel.

Therefore the fiue Kings of the Amorites, the King of Ierusalem, the King of Hebron, the King of Iarmuth, the King of Lachish, and the King of Eglon gathered themselues together, and went vp, they with all their hostes, and besieged Gibeon, and made warre against it.

And the men of Gibeon sent vnto Ioshua, euen to the hoste to Gilgal, saying, Withdrawe not thine hand from thy seruants: come vp to vs quickly, and saue vs, and helpe vs: for all the Kings of the Amorites which dwell in the mountaines, are gathered together against vs.

So Ioshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of warre with him, and all the men of might.

And the Lord sayd vnto Ioshua, Feare them not: for I haue giuen them into thine hand: none of them shall stand against thee.

Ioshua therefore came vnto them suddenly: for he went vp from Gilgal all the night.

And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth vp to Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah and to Makkedah.

And as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going downe to Beth-horon, the Lord cast downe great stones from heauen vpon them, vntill Azekah, and they dyed: they were more that dyed with the hailestones, then they whom the children of Israel slewe with the sword.

Then spake Ioshua to the Lord, in the day when the Lord gaue the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he sayd in the sight of Israel, Sunne, stay thou in Gibeon, and thou moone, in the valley of Aialon.

And the Sunne abode, and the moone stood still, vntill the people auenged themselues vpon their enemies: (Is not this written in the booke of Iasher?) so the Sunne abode in the middes of the heauen, and hasted not to goe downe for a whole day.

And there was no day like that before it, nor after it, that the Lord heard the voyce of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.

After, Ioshua returned, and all Israel with him vnto the campe to Gilgal:

The Victory at Makkedah

But the fiue Kings fled and were hid in a caue at Makkedah.

And it was tolde Ioshua, saying, The fiue Kings are found hid in a caue at Makkedah.

Then Ioshua said, Roule great stones vpon the mouth of the caue, and set men by it for to keepe them.

But stand ye not still: follow after your enemies, and smite all the hindmost, suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath giuen them into your hand.

And when Ioshua and the children of Israel had made an ende of slaying them with an exceeding great slaughter till they were consumed, and the rest that remained of them were entred into walled cities,

Then all the people returned to the campe, to Ioshua at Makkedah in peace: no man mooued his tongue against the children of Israel.

After, Ioshua sayd, Open the mouth of the caue, and bring out these fiue Kings vnto me forth of the caue.

And they did so, and brought out those fiue Kings vnto him forth of the caue, euen the King of Ierusalem, the King of Hebron, ye King of Iarmuth, the King of Lachish, and the King of Eglon.

And when they had brought out those Kings vnto Ioshua, Ioshua called for all the men of Israel, and sayd vnto the chiefe of the men of warre, which went with him, Come neere, set your feete vpon the necks of these Kings: and they came neere and set their feete vpon their necks.

And Ioshua sayd vnto them, Feare not, nor be faint hearted, but be strong and of a good courage: for thus will the Lord doe to all your enemies, against whome ye fight.

So then Ioshua smote them, and slewe them, and hanged them on fiue trees, and they hanged still vpon the trees vntill the euening.

And at the going downe of the sunne, Ioshua gaue commandement, that they should take them downe off the trees, and cast them into the caue (wherein they had bene hid) and they layde great stones vpon the caues mouth, which remaine vntill this day.

And that same day Ioshua tooke Makkedah and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the King thereof destroyed he with them, and all the soules that were therein, he let none remaine: for hee did to the King of Makkedah as he had done vnto the King of Iericho.

Conquest of the Southern Cities

Then Ioshua went from Makkedah, and all Israel with him vnto Libnah, and fought against Libnah.

And the Lord gaue it also and the King thereof into the hand of Israel: and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the soules that were therein: he let none remaine in it: for he did vnto the King thereof, as he had done vnto the King of Iericho.

And Ioshua departed from Libnah, and all Israel with him vnto Lachish, and besieged it, and assaulted it.

And the Lord gaue Lachish into the hand of Israel, which tooke it the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the soules that were therein, according to all as he had done to Libnah.

Then Horam King of Gezer came vp to helpe Lachish: but Ioshua smote him and his people, vntill none of his remained.

And from Lachish Ioshua departed vnto Eglon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged it, and assaulted it,

And they tooke it the same day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the soules that were therein he vtterly destroyed the same day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

Then Ioshua went vp from Eglon, and all Israel with him vnto Hebron, and they fought against it.

And when they had taken it, they smote it with the edge of the sword, and the King thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the soules that were therein: he left none remaining, according to all as he had done to Eglon: for he destroyed it vtterly, and all the soules that were therein.

So Ioshua returned, and all Israel with him to Debir, and fought against it.

And when he had taken it, and the King thereof, and all the citie thereof, they smote them with the edge of the sword, and vtterly destroyed all the soules that were therein, he let none remaine: as he did to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the King thereof, as he had also done to Libnah, and to the King thereof.

So Ioshua smote all the hill countreys, and the South countreys, and the valleys, and the hill sides, and all their Kings, and let none remaine, but vtterly destroyed euery soule, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.

And Ioshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea euen vnto Azzah, and all the countrey of Goshen, euen vnto Gibeon.

And all these Kings, and their land did Ioshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

Afterward, Ioshua and all Israel with him returned vnto the campe in Gilgal.

Die Sonne steht still

Als Adonisedek, der König von Jerusalem, dies hörte, nämlich dass Josue Hai eingenommen und zerstört hatte, (denn was er Jericho und dessen Könige getan, das tat er Hai und dessen Könige), und dass die Gabaoniter zu Israel übergegangen, und mit ihnen verbündet seien,

fürchtete er sich sehr. Denn Gabaon war eine große Stadt und eine von den Königsstädten, größer als die Stadt Hai, und alle ihre Krieger waren sehr tapfer.

Da sandte Adonisedek, der König von Jerusalem, zu Oham, dem Könige von Hebron, und zu Pharam, dem Könige von Jerimoth, sowie zu Japhia, dem Könige von Lachis, und zu Dabir, dem Könige von Eglon, und ließ ihnen sagen:

Ziehet zu mir herauf und kommet zu Hilfe, dass wir Gabaon erobern, weil es zu Josue und zu den Söhnen Israels übergegangen ist.

Da versammelten sich die fünf Könige der Amorrhiter, und zogen hinauf, der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jerimoth, der König von Lachis, der König von Eglon, zugleich mit ihren Heeren, und lagerten sich vor Gabaon, und begannen den Kampf gegen dasselbe.

Die Einwohner der belagerten Stadt Gabaon aber sandten zu Josue, welcher sich damals im Lager bei Galgala aufhielt, und sprachen zu ihm: Ziehe deine Hand nicht ab, sondern hilf deinen Knechten; ziehe eilends herauf, und rette uns, und bringe uns Hilfe; denn alle Könige der Amorrhiter, die im Berglande wohnen, haben sich gegen uns zusammengetan.

Da zog Josue von Galgala mit dem ganzen Heere seiner Krieger, sehr tapferen Männern, hinauf.

Und der Herr sprach zu Josue: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen! Denn ich habe sie in deine Hände gegeben; keiner von ihnen wird dir standhalten können.

Da überfiel Josue sie plötzlich, nachdem er die ganze Nacht von Galgala heraufgezogen war.

Und der Herr brachte sie vor Israel in Verwirrung, und Israel fügte ihnen einen schweren Verlust bei Gabaon zu, und verfolgte sie auf dem Wege nach der Anhöhe von Bethhoron, und schlug sie bis nach Azeka und Makeda.

Als sie nun von den Söhnen Israels flohen und auf dem Abhange von Bethhoron waren, ließ der Herr große Steine vom Himmel auf sie herabfallen, bis nach Azeka hin; und viel mehr kamen durch die Hagelsteine um, als die Söhne Israels mit dem Schwerte erschlagen hatten.

Damals redete Josue zu dem Herrn, an dem Tage, als er die Amorrhiter vor den Söhnen Israels preisgab, und sprach vor ihnen: Sonne, bewege dich nicht gegen Gabaon, und Mond, nicht gegen das Tal Ajalon!

Da standen Sonne und Mond still, bis das Volk an seinen Feinden Rache genommen. Ist dies nicht im Buche der Gerechten geschrieben? So blieb die Sonne mitten am Himmel stehen und eilte nicht unterzugehen, einen Tag lang.

Weder vorher noch nachher war ein Tag so lang, da der Herr der Stimme eines Menschen Gehör gab und für Israel stritt.

Hierauf kehrte Josue mit ganz Israel in das Lager von Galgala zurück,

Die Amoriterkönige werden hingerichtet

denn die fünf Könige waren geflohen und hatten sich in der Höhle der Stadt Makeda verborgen.

Da meldete man Josue, dass die fünf Könige in der Höhle der Stadt Makeda versteckt gefunden seien.

Und er gebot seinen Begleitern und sprach: Wälzet große Steine vor die Öffnung der Höhle und stellet achtsame Männer davor, welche die Eingeschlossenen bewachen;

ihr aber bleibet nicht stehen, sondern verfolget die Feinde und tötet die letzten der Fliehenden; und lasset sie nicht in die festen Plätze ihrer Städte gelangen, den der Herr, Gott, hat sie in eure Hände gegeben.

Nachdem nun die Feinde eine große Niederlage erlitten hatten und fast bis zur Vernichtung aufgerieben waren, zogen sich die, welche Israel hatten entkommen können, in die festen Städte.

Hierauf kehrte das ganze Heer zu Josue nach Makeda zurück, wo damals das Lager war, unversehrt und vollzählig; und niemand wagte es, sich gegen die Söhne Israels zu regen.

Und Josue befahl und sprach: Öffnet den Eingang zur Höhle und führet die fünf Könige, welche darin verborgen sind, zu mir heraus!

Da taten sie, wie ihnen geboten war, und führten die fünf Könige zu ihm aus der Höhle heraus, den König von Jerusalem, den König von Hebron, den König von Jerimoth, den König von Lachis, den König von Eglon.

Als diese nun zu ihm hinausgeführt waren, berief er alle Männer von Israel und sprach zu den Anführern des Heeres, die bei ihm waren: Gehet und setzet eure Füße auf die Hälfte dieser Könige! Und da sie hingegangen waren und ihre Füße auf die Hälfte der Niedergeworfenen gesetzt hatten,

sprach er wiederum zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht und zaget nicht, seid mutig und stark! Denn so wird der Herr an allen euren Feinden tun, gegen welche ihr streitet.

Hierauf schlug Josue dieselben, und tötete sie, und ließ sie an fünf Pfähle hängen, und so blieben sie bis zum Abend aufgehängt.

Als nun die Sonne unterging, gebot er seinen Gefährten, sie von den Galgen herabzunehmen. Diese nahmen sie herab, und warfen sie in die Höhle, in der sie versteckt gewesen waren, und legten vor die Öffnung derselben große Steine, welche noch da sind bis auf diesen Tag.

Eroberung des Südlandes

An demselben Tage nahm Josue noch die Stadt Makeda ein, und schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und tötete ihren König, und alle ihre Einwohner; er ließ darin auch nicht das Geringste übrig. Und er tat dem Könige von Makeda, wie er dem Könige von Jericho getan hatte.

Hierauf zog er mit dem gesamten Israel von Makeda nach Lebna und kämpfte gegen dasselbe,

und der Herr gab es samt dessen Könige in die Hände Israels; und sie schlugen die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und alle Einwohner derselben, und ließen nichts darin übrig. Dem Könige von Lebna aber taten sie, wie sie dem Könige von Jericho getan hatten.

Von Lebna zog er mit ganz Israel nach Lachis, und umstellte es mit seinem Kriegsheere und griff es an.

Und der Herr gab Lachis in die Hand Israels, und er nahm es am andern Tage ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und alles Lebende, das darin war, so wie er Lebna getan hatte.

Zu derselben Zeit zog Horam, der König von Gazer, heran, um der Stadt Lachis zu Hilfe zu kommen; doch Josue schlug ihn mit seinem ganzen Volke bis zur Vernichtung.

Alsdann zog er von Lachis nach Eglon, und umlagerte es,

und nahm es an demselben Tage ein; und schlug alles Lebende, das darin war, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, ganz so wie er mit Lachis getan hatte.

Hierauf zog er mit ganz Israel von Eglon nach Hebron hinauf und kämpfte gegen dasselbe;

und er nahm es ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, auch seinen König, und alle Ortschaften der Umgebung, und alles Lebende, das darin weilte, und ließ nichts darin übrig; wie er Eglon getan, so tat er auch Hebron und vernichtete alles, was er darin fand, mit dem Schwerte.

Von da zog er gegen Dabir zurück,

nahm es ein und zerstörte es; und dessen König und alle Städte ringsum schlug er mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; er ließ nichts darin übrig; wie er Hebron und Lebna und ihren Königen getan hatte, so tat er Dabir und dessen Könige.

So bezwang Josue das ganze Bergland, und das Südland, und die Ebene und Asedoth und deren Könige; er ließ darin nichts übrig, sondern tötete alles, was atmen konnte, wie der Herr, der Gott Israels, ihm geboten hatte,

von Kadesbarne bis nach Gaza. Das ganze Land Gosen bis nach Gabaon,

und alle Könige und ihre Gebiete nahm er auf einen Angriff ein und verheerte sie; denn der Herr, der Gott Israels, stritt für das Volk.

Alsdann kehrte er wieder mit ganz Israel zum Lagerorte nach Galgala zurück.
