- Kapitel 14 -

The evil of avarice: works of mercy are recommended, and the love of wisdom.

Blessed is the man that hath not slipped by a word out of his mouth, and is not pricked with the remorse of sin.

Happy is he that hath had no sadness of his mind, and who is not fallen from his hope.

Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold?

He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting.

He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods.

There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness:

And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness.

The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul.

The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up.

An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table.

My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings.

Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die.

Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor.

Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee.

Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours?

Give and take, and justify thy soul.

Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food.

All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree.

Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.

Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it.

And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein.

Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God.

He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways:

He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door:

He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever.

He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches:

He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory.

Glückselig der Mann, der sich in keinem Worte aus seinem Munde verfehlt und der nicht von Reue über eine Sünde gequält wird.

Wohl dem, dem sein Herz keine traurigen Vorwürfe macht und der die Hoffnung nicht sinken lässt.

Einem geldgierigen und kargen Manne nützt Reichtum nichts, und wozu soll dem Missgünstigen Gold dienen?

Wer sich selbst Unrecht tut und abdarbt, sammelt für andere, und ein Fremder wird seine Güter verprassen.

Wer gegen sich selbst böse ist, gegen wen wird ein solcher gut sein? Er wird seines Besitzes nimmer froh werden.

Keiner ist schlimmer als wer sich selbst nichts gönnt, und das ist der Lohn für seine Bosheit.

Tut er auch etwas Gutes, so tut er es ohne Absicht und nicht mit Willen und zuletzt macht er seine Schlechtigkeit offenbar.

Das Auge des Neidischen ist boshaft, er wendet sein Angesicht ab und missachtet seine eigene Seele.

Das Auge des Habsüchtigen gibt sich nie zufrieden mit einem Teile des Unrechts; er wird nicht satt, bis er seine Seele austrocknet und verzehrt.

Ein böses Auge sieht nur auf Böses, es wird nicht vom Brote satt, sondern darbt und sitzt trauernd am eigenen Tische.

Mein Sohn! Wenn du es hast, tue dir Gutes und bringe Gott nach Gebühr Opfer dar.

Gedenke, dass der Tod nicht säumt und dass dir der Ratschluss der Unterwelt offenbart ist, denn das Gesetz dieser Welt ist: Man muss sterben.

Vor dem Tode tue deinem Freunde wohl und nach deinem Vermögen reiche dar und gib dem Armen.

Entziehe dir keinen guten Tag und lass dir keinen Teil guter Gabe entgehen.

Wirst du nicht den Ertrag deiner Mühen und Arbeiten anderen zurücklassen zur Verteilung durch das Los?

Gib und nimm und tue recht für deine Seele.

Vor deinem Tode übe Gerechtigkeit, denn im Grabe gibt es keine Speise.

Alles Fleisch veraltet wie Gras und wie ein frischsprossendes Blatt an einem grünem Baume.

Die einen kommen hervor, die anderen fallen ab, so ist das Geschlecht von Fleisch und Blut: das eine stirbt, das andere wird geboren.

Alle vergänglichen Werke vergehen endlich und wer solche betreibt, geht mit ihnen dahin.

Alle auserlesenen Werke aber werden gerechtfertigt und wer sie verrichtet, findet durch dieselben Ehre.

Glückselig der Mann, der in der Weisheit beharrt und der seine Gerechtigkeit erwägt und in seinem Herzen über Gottes Vorsehung nachsinnt;

der ihre Wege in seinem Herzen bedenkt, ihre Geheimnisse erforscht, ihr nachgeht wie ein Späher und auf ihren Wegen bleibt;

der durch ihre Fenster hineinblickt und an ihren Türen lauscht;

der nahe bei ihrem Hause wohnt und den Zeltpfahl bei ihren Wänden einschlägt, um seine Wohnung an ihrer Seite aufzurichten. Auf ewig wird in seinem Hause das Glück wohnen.

Er stellt seine Kinder unter ihren Schutz und lagert unter ihren Zweigen.

Unter ihrem Schirme ist er geschützt vor Hitze und findet Ruhe in ihrer Herrlichkeit.
