- Kapitel 4 -

I, Nabuchodonosor, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace:

I saw a dream that affrighted me: and my thoughts in my bed, and the visions of my head troubled me.

Then I set forth a decree, that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought in before me, and that they should shew me the interpretation of the dream.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Great Tree

Then came in the diviners, the wise men, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers, and I told the dream before them: but they did not shew me the interpretation thereof:

Till their colleague Daniel came in before me, whose name is Baltassar, according to the name of my god, who hath in him the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him.

Baltassar, prince of the diviners, because I know that thou hast in thee the spirit of the holy gods, and that no secret is impossible to thee: tell me the visions of my dreams that I have seen, and the interpretation of them.

This was the vision of my head in my bed: I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was exceeding great.

The tree was great, and strong: and the height thereof reached unto heaven: the sight thereof was even to the ends of all the earth.

Its leaves were most beautiful, and its fruit exceeding much: and in it was food for all: under it dwelt cattle, and beasts, and in the branches thereof the fowls of the air had their abode: and all flesh did eat of it.

I saw in the vision of my head upon my bed, and behold a watcher, and a holy one came down from heaven.

He cried aloud, and said thus: Cut down the tree, and chop off the branches thereof: shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruits: let the beasts fly away that are under it, and the birds from its branches.

Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be tied with a band of iron, and of brass, among the grass, that is without, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let its portion be with the wild beasts in the grass of the earth.

Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given him; and let seven times pass over him.

This is the decree by the sentence of the watchers, and the word And demand of the holy ones; till the living know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men; and he will give it to whomsoever it shall please him, and he will appoint the basest man over it.

I king Nabuchodonosor saw this dream: thou, therefore, O Baltassar, tell me quickly the interpretation: for all the wise men of my kingdom axe not able to declare the meaning of it to me: but thou art able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

Then Daniel, whose name was Baltassar, began silently to think within himself for about one hour: and his thoughts troubled him. But the king answering, said: Baltassar, let not the dream and the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Baltassar answered, and said: My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thy enemies.

The tree which thou sawest which was high and strong, whose height reached to the skies, and the sight thereof into all tire earth:

And the branches thereof were most beautiful, and its fruit exceeding much, and in it was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and the birds of the air had their abode in its branches.

Daniel Interprets the Second Dream

It is thou, O king, who art grown great and become mighty: for thy greatness hath grown, and hath reached to heaven, and thy power unto the ends of the earth.

And whereas the king saw a watcher, and a holy one come down from heaven, and say: Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, and let it be bound with iron and brass among the grass without, and let it be sprinkled with the dew of heaven, and let his feeding be with the wild beasts, till seven times pass over him.

This is the interpretation of the sentence of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king.

They shall cast thee out from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with cattle and with wild beasts, and thou shalt eat grass as an ox, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven: and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

But whereas he commanded, that the stump of the roots thereof, that is, of the tree, should be left: thy kingdom shall remain to thee after thou shalt have known that power is from heaven.

Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to thee, and redeem thou thy sins with alms, and thy iniquities with works of mercy to the poor: perhaps he will forgive thy offences.

All these things came upon king Nabuchodonosor.

At the end of twelve months he was walking in the palace of Babylon.

And the king answered, and said: Is not this the great Babylon, which I have built to be the seat of the kingdom, by the strength of my power, and in the glory of my excellence?

The Second Dream Fulfilled

And while the word was yet in the king’s mouth, a voice came down from heaven: To thee, O king Nabuchodonosor, it is said: Thy kingdom shall pass from thee,

And they shall cast thee out from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with cattle and wild beasts: thou shalt eat grass like an ox, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

The same hour the word was fulfilled upon Nabuchodonosor, and he was driven away from among men, and did eat grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven: till his hairs grew like the feathers of eagles, and his nails like birds’ claws.

Now at the end of the days, I Nabuchodonosor lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my sense was restored to me: and I blessed the most High, and I praised and glorified him that liveth for ever: for his power is an everlasting power, and his kingdom is to all generations.

And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him: for he doth according to his will, I as well with the powers of heaven, as among the inhabitants of the earth: and there is none that can resist his hand, and say to him: Why hast thou done it?

At the same time my sense returned to me, and I came to the honour and glory of my kingdom: and my shape returned to me: and my nobles, and my magistrates sought for me, and I was restored to my kingdom: and greater majesty was added to me.

Nebuchadnezzar Restored

Therefore I Nabuchodonosor do now praise, and magnify, and glorify the King of heaven: because all his works are true, and his ways judgments, and them that walk in pride he is able to abase.

Nebukadnezars zweiter Traum

Ich, Nabuchodonosor, lebte sorglos in meinem Hause und glücklich in meinem Palaste;

da hatte ich ein Traumgesicht, das mich erschreckte, und meine Gedanken auf meinem Lager, und die Gesichte meines Hauptes beängstigten mich.

Und es ging von mir der Befehl aus, dass alle Weisen Babylons vor mich geführt würden, damit sie mir kundtäten, was der Traum zu bedeuten habe.

Da kamen die Wahrsager, die Weisen, die Chaldäer, die Zeichendeuter, und ich erzählte ihnen den Traum; aber sie gaben mir nicht an, was er zu bedeuten habe,

bis zuletzt Daniel vor mein Antlitz trat, der nach dem Namen meines Gottes Baltassar heißt und der den Geist der heiligen Götter besitzt; diesem legte ich den Traum vor.

Baltassar. Oberster der Zeichendeuter! da ich weiß, dass du den Geist der heiligen Götter besitzest und kein Geheimnis dir unenthüllbar ist, so gib mir mein Traumgesicht an, das ich gehabt, und seine Deutung.

Das Gesicht meines Hauptes auf meinem Lager war dies: Ich schaute, siehe, da stand ein Baum mitten auf der Erde, überaus hochragend.

Das Baum war groß und stark, seine Höhe reichte bis zum Himmel empor und er war sichtbar bis an die Grenzen der ganzen Erde.

Sein Laubwerk war sehr schön und seine Früchte überaus zahlreich, er gab allen Nahrung, unter ihm wohnten zahme und wilde Tiere, in seinen Zweigen weilten die Vögel des Himmels und alle lebenden Wesen nährten sich von ihm.

Ich schaute im Gesichte meines Hauptes auf meinem Lager, siehe, da stieg ein Wächter, ein Heiliger, vom Himmel herab.

Dieser rief mit starker Stimme und sprach also: Fället den Baum und hauet seine Zweige ab, streifet sein Laub ab und streuet seine Früchte umher; es fliehe das Getier, welches unter ihm ist, und die Vögel aus seinen Zweigen!

Jedoch seinen Wurzelstock lasset in der Erde, dieser werde mit Banden von Eisen und Erz im Grünen des Feldes gefesselt, dass er vom Taue des Himmels benetzt werde und mit den Tieren seinen Anteil habe am Grase der Erde!

Sein Herz soll aus einem menschlichen verwandelt und ihm dafür das Herz eines wilden Tieres gegeben werden und sieben Zeiten sollen so über ihn dahingehen!

So ist es bestimmt durch den Spruch der Wächter und das ist die Verkündigung und der Befehl der Heiligen, auf dass die Lebenden erkennen, dass der Allerhöchste über das Königtum der Menschen Macht hat und es verleihen kann, wem er will, und den niedrigsten der Menschen darüber zu setzen vermag.

Dies ist das Traumgesicht, das ich, König Nabuchodonosor, gehabt: du also, Baltassar! Verkünde ohne Verzug die Deutung, denn alle Weisen meines Reiches vermögen mir die Deutung nicht anzugeben; doch du kannst es, weil du den Geist der heiligen Götter besitzest.

Da begann Daniel, dessen Name Baltassar ist, bei sich schweigend etwa eine Stunde lang nachzudenken und seine Gedanken beunruhigten ihn. Der König aber redete ihn an und sprach: Baltassar! Lass dich durch den Traum und seine Deutung nicht beunruhigen. Baltassar antwortete und sprach: Mein Gebieter! Er Traum gelte denen, welche dich hassen, und seine Deutung deinen Feinden!

Der Baum, den du geschaut hast, der hoch und stark war, dessen Höhe bis zum Himmel emporreichte und der über die ganze Erde hin gesehen ward,

dessen Gezweige sehr schön, dessen Früchte überaus reichlich waren, von dem alles Nahrung erhielt, unter dem die Tiere des Feldes wohnten und auf dessen Zweigen die Vögel des Himmels weilten:

Daniel erklärt den zweiten Traum

der bist du, o König! der du groß und mächtig geworden bist; denn deine Größe ist gewaltig geworden und reicht bis an den Himmel und seine Macht bis an die Grenzen der ganzen Erde.

Dass aber der König einen Wächter, einen Heiligen, vom Himmel herniederkommen sah, der rief: Haut den Baum um und vernichtet ihn, doch der Stumpf samt seinen Wurzeln lasset in der Erde; ein Fessel von Eisen und Erz werde ihm im Grün des Feldes angelegt, dass er vom Taue des Himmels benetzt werde, und mit den wilden Tieren habe er seine Speise, bis sieben Zeiten über ihn dahingegangen sind;

so ist dies die Deutung des Beschlusses es Allerhöchsten, er über meinen Gebieter, den König, ergangen ist:

Man wird dich aus der Gesellschaft der Menschen ausstoßen und bei dem Vieh und den wilden Tieren wir dein Aufenthalt sein; du wirst Gras fressen wie ein Rind und wirst vom Taue des Himmels benetzt werden und so werden sieben Zeiten über dich dahingehen, bis du erkennst, dass der Allerhöchste über das Königtum der Menschen Macht hat und es verleiht, wem er will.

Dass er aber befahl, den Wurzelstock des Baumes stehen zu lassen, bedeutet, dass dein Königtum dir verbleiben soll, nachdem du erkannt hast, dass der Himmel die Herrschaft übt.

Darum, o König! lass dir meinen Rat gefallen: löse dich von deinen Sünden durch Almosen und von deinen Missetaten durch Barmherzigkeit gegen die Bedrängten, so wird er vielleicht deine Sünden verzeihen.

Dies alles kam über den König Nabuchodonosor.

Als er nach Verlauf von zwölf Monaten auf der Burg von Babylon wandelte,

hob der König an und sprach: Ist dies nicht das große Babylon, das ich zur Wohnung des Königs durch meine starke Macht und zur Verherrlichung meines Glanzes gebaut habe?

Nebukadnezar's Demütigung

Doch noch war das Wort in des Königs Munde, da ertönte eine Stimme vom Himmel herab: Dir, o König Nabuchodonosor! wird gesagt: Dein Königtum soll dir genommen werden

und man wird dich aus der Gesellschaft der Menschen ausstoßen und bei den wilden Tieren wird dein Aufenthalt sein; du wirst Gras fressen wie ein Rind und sieben Zeiten werden über dich dahingehen, bis du erkennst, dass der Allerhöchste über das Königtum der Menschen Macht hat, und es verleiht, wem er will.

Zu derselben Stunde ging das Wort an Nabuchodonosor in Erfüllung: er ward aus der Gesellschaft der Menschen ausgestoßen, fraß Gras wie ein Rind und sein Leib ward vom Taue des Himmels befeuchtet, bis ihm das Haar wuchs wie Adlerfedern und die Nägel wie Vögelkrallen.

Nach Ablauf der Tage aber erhob ich, Nabuchodonosor, meine Augen zum Himmel und mein Verstand ward mir zurückgegeben. Da pries und verherrlichte ich den Allerhöchsten und lobte den, der in Ewigkeit lebt; denn seine Macht ist eine ewige und seine Herrschaft währt von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht.

Alle Bewohner der Erde sind neben ihm nichts zu achten, denn nach seinem Willen verfährt er sowohl ist den Mächten des Himmels, wie mit den Bewohnern der Erde und niemand ist, der seiner Macht widerstehen und ihm sagen dürfte: Warum hast du das getan?

Zu derselben Zeit kehrte mir der Verstand wieder und ich gelangte wieder zur Würde und zur Herrlichkeit meiner Herrschaft und ich erhielt meine frühere Gestalt wieder, meine Großen und meine Statthalter suchten mich auf und setzten mich wieder über mein Reich und noch größere Herrlichkeit ward mir zuteil.

Nebukadnezar lobt Gott

Darum lobe und verherrliche und preise ich, Nabuchodonosor, nun den König des Himmels, denn alle seine Taten sind wahrhaft und seine Wege gerecht, und die in Hoffart wandeln, vermag er zu demütigen.
