- Kapitel 10 -

Now I Paul myself beseech you, by the mildness and modesty of Christ, who in presence indeed am lowly among you, but being absent, am bold toward you.

But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present, with that confidence wherewith I am thought to be bold, against some, who reckon us as if we walked according to the flesh.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty to God unto the pulling down of fortifications, destroying counsels,

And every height that exhalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ;

And having in readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience shall be fulfilled.

See the things that are according to outward appearance. If any man trust to himself, that he is Christ’s, let him think this again with himself, that as he is Christ’s, so are we also.

For if also I should boast somewhat more of our power, which the Lord hath given us unto edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed.

But that I may not be thought as it were to terrify you by epistles,

(For his epistles indeed, say they, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible,)

Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by epistles, when absent, such also we will be indeed when present.

For we dare not match, or compare ourselves with some, that commend themselves; but we measure ourselves by ourselves, and compare ourselves with ourselves.

But we will not glory beyond our measure; but according to the measure of the rule, which God hath measured to us, a measure to reach even unto you.

For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as if we reached not unto you. For we are come as far as to you in the gospel of Christ.

Not glorying beyond measure in other men’s labours; but having hope of your increasing faith, to be magnified in you according to our rule abundantly;

Yea, unto those places that are beyond you, to preach the gospel, not to glory in another man’s rule, in those things that are made ready to our hand.

But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

For not he who commendeth himself, is approved, but he, whom God commendeth.

Der geistliche Krieg

Ich selbst aber, Paulus, bitte euch bei der Sanftmut und Milde Christi, der ich in´s Angesicht zwar gering bin unter euch, abwesend aber Mut habe gegen euch.

Ich bitte euch nun, dass ich nicht anwesend Mut haben müsse mit jener Zuversicht, mit der ich, wie man meint, Mut habe gegen gewisse, die dafürhalten, dass wir nach dem Fleische wandeln.

Denn ob wir auch im Fleische wandeln, so kämpfen wir nicht nach dem Fleische.

Denn die Waffen unseres Kampfes sind nicht fleischlich, sondern mächtig durch Gott zur Zerstörung von Festen, indem wir die Ratschläge zerstören

und jede Hoheit, welche sich erhebt wider die Erkenntnis Gottes, jeden Verstand zum Gehorsame Christi gefangen nehmen,

und bereit sind, allen Ungehorsam zu züchtigen, sobald euer Gehorsam vollendet sein wird.

Die Realität von Paulus' Autorität

Sehet, was vor Augen liegt! Wenn jemand sich zutraut, Christi zu sein, so bedenke er dies wiederum bei sich, dass, wie er Christi ist, so auch wir.

Denn wenn ich mich auch etwas mehr unserer Gewalt rühmen werde, die uns der Herr zur Auferbauung, und nicht zu eurer Zerstörung gegeben hat, so werde ich nicht zu Schanden werden.

Damit ihr aber nicht glaubet, ich wollte euch schrecken durch Briefe, -

denn die Briefe, sagen sie, sind streng und heftig, seine leibliche Gegenwart aber ist schwach, und seine Rede verächtlich -

so bedenke ein solcher, dass, wie wir abwesend in Worten durch Briefe sind, wir so auch anwesend in der Tat sein werden.

Die Grenzen von Paulus' Autorität

Denn wir wagen es nicht, uns gewissen Leuten beizugesellen, die sich selbst empfehlen, oder uns mit ihnen zu vergleichen; sondern wir messen uns nach dem, was wir in uns sind, und wir vergleichen uns mit uns selbst.

Wir werden uns nicht in´s Unbemessene rühmen, sondern nach dem Maße der Richtschnur, welche uns Gott zugeteilt hat, als Maß, um bis zu euch hinzureichen.

Denn nicht, als wenn wir nicht bis zu euch reichen, dehnen wir uns über Gebühr aus; sondern wir sind bis zu euch hingelangt mit dem Evangelium Christi.

Nicht in´s Unbemessene rühmen wir uns fremder Arbeiten; wir haben vielmehr die Hoffnung, wenn euer Glaube wächst, durch euch unserer Aufgabe gemäß reichlich zu wachsen.

So dass wir auch in jenen Gegenden, welche über euch hinausliegen, das Evangelium verkünden, nicht innerhalb einer fremden Aufgabe uns dessen rühmen müssen, was schon zu Stande gebracht ist.

Wer sich aber rühmt, der rühme sich im Herrn;

denn nicht, wer sich selbst empfiehlt, ist bewährt, sondern der, welchen Gott empfiehlt.
