- Kapitel 3 -

“It is commonly said: ‘If a man has divorced his wife, and she departs from him, she will marry another man.’ So why would he return to her again? Is not that woman polluted and defiled? But you have fornicated yourself with many lovers. Even so, return to me, says the Lord, and I will accept you.

Lift your eyes straight up, and see where you did not debase yourself. You were sitting in the roadways, waiting for them, like a robber in the wilderness. And you have polluted the land by your fornications and by your wickedness.

For this reason, the rain showers were withheld, and there were no late season rains. You made your face like that of a promiscuous woman; you were not willing to blush.

Therefore, at least from this moment on, call out to me: ‘You are my father, the guide of my virginity.’

Why should you be angry unceasingly? And will you continue in this to the end? Behold, you have spoken and done evil, for you were able to do so.”

Judah Follows Israel’s Example

And, in the days of king Josiah, the Lord said to me: “Have you not seen what the apostate Israel has done? She has brought herself up to every lofty mountain, and she has lain down under every leafy tree, and she has committed fornication there.

And when she had done all these things, I said: ‘Return to me.’ But she did not return. And her deceitful sister Judah saw this:

that because the apostate Israel had committed adultery, I had dismissed her and had given her a bill of divorce. Yet her deceitful sister Judah was not afraid. But she, too, went and committed fornication herself.

And by the act of her fornication, she defiled the land. For she committed adultery with that which is stone and wood.

And after all these things, her deceitful sister Judah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but with lies, says the Lord.”

A Call to Repentance

(Hosea 14:1–3; Zechariah 1:1–6)

And the Lord said to me: “The apostate Israel has justified her own soul by comparing herself to the deceitful Judah.

Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and you shall say: Return, O apostate Israel, says the Lord. For I will not avert my face from you. For I am holy, says the Lord, and I will not be angry forever.

So then, truly acknowledge your iniquity, that you have betrayed the Lord your God, and that you have spread your ways to strangers, under every leafy tree, and that you have not listened to my voice, says the Lord.

Convert, O rebellious sons, says the Lord. For I am your leader. And so, I will take you, one from a city, and two from a family, and I will lead you into Zion.

And I will give you pastors according to my own heart. And they will feed you with knowledge and doctrine.

And when you have been multiplied and increased in the land in those days, says the Lord, they will no longer say: ‘The Ark of the covenant of the Lord!’ And it will not enter into the heart, and they will not call it to mind. It will neither be visited, nor made use of, any longer.

In that time, Jerusalem will be called: ‘The Throne of the Lord.’ And all the nations will be gathered to it, in the name of the Lord, in Jerusalem. And they will not walk after the depravity of their own most wicked heart.

In those days, the house of Judah will go to the house of Israel, and they will come from the land of the north, at the same time, to the land that I gave to your fathers.

But I said: How shall I place you among the sons, and distribute to you a desirable land, the preeminent inheritance of the host of the Gentiles? And I said: You will call me Father, and you will not cease to walk after me.

But, in the same way that a woman spurns her lover, so also has the house of Israel spurned me, says the Lord.”

A voice has been heard in the highways, the weeping and wailing of the sons of Israel. For they have made their own ways sinful; they have forgotten the Lord their God.

“Convert, O rebellious sons! And I will heal your rebelliousness.” “Behold, we are returning to you. For you are the Lord our God!

Truly, the hills were liars, with the multitude of the mountains. Truly, the salvation of Israel is in the Lord our God.

Confusion has devoured the labor of our fathers, from our youth, with their flocks and their herds, with their sons and their daughters.

We will sleep in our confusion, and our disgrace will cover us. For we have sinned against the Lord our God: we and our fathers, from our youth, even to this day. And we have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God.”

Israel ist schamlos

Allgemein heißt es: Wenn ein Mann sein Weib entlässt und sie geht weg von ihm und nimmt einen andern Mann, darf er dann wohl wieder zu ihr zurückkehren? Wird eine solche Frau nicht befleckt und entweiht sein? Auch du hast mit vielen Liebhabern gebuhlt; aber kehre zu mir zurück, spricht der Herr, so will ich dich aufnehmen.

Erhebe deine Augen dort geradehin und siehe, wo du nicht geschändet bist. An den Wegen saßest du und lauertest auf sie wie ein Räuber in der Wüste und beflecktest das Land durch deine Buhlerei und deine Bosheit.

Darum ward auch das Fallen des Regens zurückgehalten und kein Spätregen fiel, aber du zeigtest die Stirn einer Buhlerin und wolltest dich nicht schämen.

So rufe doch wenigstens von nun an zu mir: Mein Vater, der Führer meiner Jungfrauschaft bist du.

Solltest du denn immerdar zürnen oder ewig nachtragen? Siehe, so sprachst du, tatest Böses und setztest es durch!

Ein Aufruf zur Buße

Und der Herr sprach zu mir in den Tagen des Königs Josias: Hast du gesehen, was Israel, die Abtrünnige, getan hat? Sie ging in ihrer Lust hin auf alle hohen Berge und unter alle belaubten Bäume und buhlte daselbst.

Da sprach ich, nachdem sie alles das getan hatte: Kehre um zu mir! Aber sie kehrte nicht um. Und Juda, ihre Schwester, die Treulose, sah es,

dass ich Israel, die Abtrünnige, weil sie die Ehe gebrochen, entlassen und ihr einen Scheidebrief gegeben hatte; aber Juda, ihre Schwester, die Treulose, fürchtete sich nicht, sondern ging hin und trieb auch selbst Buhlerei.

Sie befleckte das Land durch die Leichtfertigkeit ihrer Buhlerei und beging Ehebruch mit Stein und Holz.

Und auch bei alledem kehrte die Treulose, Juda, ihre Schwester, nicht um zu mir von ganzem Herzen, sondern mit Lügen, spricht der Herr.

(Hosea 14,1-3; Sacharja 1,1-6)

Und der Herr sprach zu mir: Die Abtrünnige, Israel, ist unschuldig im Vergleiche mit der Treulosen, Juda.

Gehe hin und rufe diese Worte gegen Mitternacht und sprich: Kehre zurück, du Abtrünnige, Israel! spricht der Herr, und ich werde mein Angesicht nicht mehr von euch abwenden; denn ich bin heilig, spricht der Herr, und werde nicht ewig zürnen.

Doch erkenne deine Verschuldung, dass du wider den Herrn, deinen Gott, treulos gewesen und hin und wieder geschweift bist zu Fremden unter allen belaubten Bäume und auf meine Stimme nicht gehört hast, spricht der Herr.

Kehret um, ihr abtrünnigen Söhne! Spricht der Herr; denn ich bin euer Gebieter und ich will euch aufnehmen, je einen aus jeder Stadt und je zwei aus einem Geschlecht, und euch heimführen nach Sion.

Und ich will euch Hirten geben nach meinem Herzen, die euch mit Weisheit und Lehre weiden sollen.

Und wenn euer viele geworden und ihr euch im Lande gemehrt habt in jener Zeit, spricht der Herr, wird man nicht mehr sagen: Die Bundeslade des Herrn! und sie wird niemand in den Sinn kommen nach wird man sich ihrer erinnern noch sie vermissen noch fortan eine fertigen,

vielmehr wird man in jener Zeit Jerusalem Thron des Herrn nennen und es werden sich alle Völker im Namen des Herrn zu Jerusalem zu diesem sammeln und werden nicht mehr der Verderbtheit ihres bösen Herzens folgen.

In jener Zeit wird das Haus Juda zu dem Hause Israel gehen und sie werden zusammen aus dem Lande gegen Mitternacht in das Land kommen, welches ich euren Vätern gegeben habe.

Ich sprach zwar: Wie will ich dich bei meinen Söhnen stellen und dir ein begehrenswertes Land, ein herrliches Erbe unter den Scharen der Völker verleihen? Und ich sprach: Du wirst mich Vater nennen und nicht aufhören mir zu folgen!

Aber wie ein Weib sich von ihrem Buhlen wendet, so hat sich das Haus Israel von mir gewendet, spricht der Herr.

Geschrei lässt sich auf den Wegen vernehmen, Weinen und Klagen der Kinder Israels, weil sie ihren Weg verkehrt und des Herrn, ihres Gottes, vergessen haben!

Kehret um, ihr abtrünnigen Söhne! So will ich eure Abtrünnigkeit heilen. Siehe, wir kommen zu dir, denn du bist der Herr, unser Gott.

Fürwahr, trügerisch waren die Hügel und die Menge der Berge; fürwahr, bei dem Herrn, unserm Gott, ist Israels Heil!

Die Schmach hat den Erwerb unserer Väter von unserer Jugend an verzehrt, ihre Herden und ihre Rinder, ihre Söhne und ihre Töchter.

Wir wollen uns niederlegen in unserer Schmach und unsere Schande soll uns einhüllen; denn wir haben gegen den Herrn, unsern Gott, gesündigt, wie unsere Väter, von unserer Jugend an bis auf den heutigen Tag, und haben nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn, unseres Gottes, gehört.
