The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

- Kapitel 25 -

The word that came to Jeremiah about all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah. The same is the first year of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.

And the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying:

“From the thirteenth year of Josiah, the son of Amon, the king of Judah, even until this day, which is the twenty-third year, the word of the Lord has been given to me, and I have spoken to you, rising while it was still night, and speaking, and yet you have not listened.

And the Lord has sent to you all his servants, the prophets, rising at first light, and sending, and yet you have not listened, and you have not inclined your ears, so that you would hear,

when he said: Return, each one from his evil way, and from your wicked thoughts. And you shall dwell in the land, which the Lord has given to you and to your fathers, from ancient times and even forever.

And do not choose to go after strange gods, so that you would serve them and adore them. And do not provoke me to wrath by the works of your hands. And then I will not afflict you.

And yet you have not listened to me, says the Lord, and so you have provoked me to anger with the works of your hands, to your own harm.”

Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts: “Since you have not listened to my words,

behold, I will send for and take all the associates of the north, says the Lord, and Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will lead them over this land, and over its inhabitants, and over all the nations that are around it. And I will destroy them, and I will set them in the midst of stupor and hissing, and continual desolations.(a)

And I will perish from them the voice of gladness and the voice of rejoicing, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstone and the light of the lamp.

And this entire land will be in desolation and in stupor. And all these nations will serve the king of Babylon, for seventy years.

And when the seventy years have been completed, I will visit their iniquity upon the king of Babylon, and upon that nation, and upon the land of the Chaldeans, says the Lord. And I will set it in continual desolations.(b)

And I will lead over that land all my words, which I have spoken against it, all that has been written in this book, everything whatsoever that Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.

For they have served them, though these were populous nations and great kings. And I will repay them according to their works and according to the deeds of their hands.”

The Cup of God’s Wrath

For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Take the chalice of the wine of this fury from my hand. And you shall cause all the nations, to which I will send you, to drink from it.

And they will drink, and be stirred up, and become maddened, before the face of the sword that I will send among them.”

And I received the chalice from the hand of the Lord, and I caused all the nations, to which the Lord has sent me, to drink from it:

Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings, and its leaders, so that I gave them over to desolation, and stupor, and hissing, and a curse, just as it is this day.

“But as for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and his servants, and his leaders, and all his people,

and the entire populace in general: all the kings of the land of the south, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,

and Idumea, and Moab, and the sons of Ammon,

and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the land of the islands that are across the sea,

and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all those who have shaved off their hair,

and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the west, who live in the desert,

and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media,

and likewise, all the kings of the north from near to far, each one facing his brother, and all the kingdoms upon the face of the earth, and the king of Sesac: all these shall drink after them.(c)

And you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, and be inebriated, and vomit, and fall down. And you shall not rise up before the face of the sword that I will send among you.

And if they refuse to receive the cup from your hand and to drink, you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts: Certainly, you shall drink!

For behold, I am beginning to afflict the city in which my name has been invoked, and will you be innocent and immune? You will not be immune! For I will call the sword over all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.

And you shall prophesy to them all these words, and you shall say to them: The Lord will roar from on high, and he will utter his voice from his holy habitation. When roaring, he will roar over the place of his beauty. He will call out, like those who chant in rhythm as they trample the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.

The sound of it will penetrate even to the ends of the earth. For the Lord is entering into judgment with the nations. He himself is entering into judgment with all flesh. I have delivered the impious to the sword, says the Lord.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, an affliction will go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind will go forth from the ends of the earth.

And the slain of the Lord will be, on that day, from one end of the earth, even to the other end. They will not be mourned, and they will not be gathered, and they will not be buried. They will lie upon the face of the earth like dung.

The Cry of the Shepherds

Wail, O shepherds, and cry out! And sprinkle yourselves with ashes, O nobles of the flock! For the days have been completed that lead to your slaughter and your destruction. And you will fall like precious vessels.

And escape will flee from the shepherds, and safety will flee from the nobility of the flock.”

There is a voice of outcry from the shepherds, and a wailing among the nobles among the flock! For the Lord has laid waste to their pastures.

And the fields of peace have been silenced before the face of the fury of the Lord.

He has abandoned those he sheltered like a lion. For the earth has become a desolation before the face of the anger of the dove, and before the face of the fury of the Lord.(d)

Siebzig Jahre der Verwüstung

Wort, welches an Jeremias erging über das ganze Volk Juda im vierten Jahre Joakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda (das ist das erste Jahr Nabuchodonosors, des Königs von Babylon,)

welches Jeremias, der Prophet, zu dem ganzen Volke Juda redete und zu allen Bewohnern Jerusalems, also lautend:

Vom dreizehnten Jahre Josias, des Sohnes Ammons, des Königs von Juda, bis auf diesen Tag, diese dreiundzwanzig Jahre hindurch ist das Wort des Herrn an mich ergangen und ich habe zu euch vom frühen Morgen an geredet, doch ihr habt nicht gehört.

Auch sandte der Herr alle seine Diener, die Propheten, zu euch, vom frühen Morgen an sendend; aber ihr habt nicht gehört und eure Ohren nicht geneigt, um zu hören,

da er sprach: Kehret um, ein jeder von seinem bösen Wege und von euern schlimmen Bestrebungen, so sollt ihr in dem Lande wohnen bleiben, das der Herr euch und euern Vätern gegeben hat von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit.

Gehet nicht fremden Göttern nach, um ihnen zu dienen und sie anzubeten, und reizet mich nicht zum Zorne durch die Werke eurer Hände, so will ich euch nicht strafen.

Aber ihr habt nicht auf mich gehört, spricht der Herr, auf dass ihr mich zum Zorn reiztet durch die Werke eurer Hände, euch selbst zum Unheil.

Darum spricht der Herr der Heerscharen also: Weil ihr auf meine Worte nicht gehört habt,

sehet, so will ich hinsenden und alle Geschlechter von Mitternacht her herbeiholen, spricht der Herr, und Nabuchodonosor, den König von Babylon, meinen Knecht, und will sie über dieses Land und über seine Bewohner und über alle Völker ringsum bringen und ich will sie töten und zum Gegenstande des Entsetzens und des Gespöttes und zur Wüstenei auf ewig machen.

Ich will unter ihnen den Ruf der Freude und den Laut des Frohlockens, die Stimme des Bräutigams und die Stimme der Braut, das Geräusch der Mühle und das Licht der Lampe aufhören lassen.

Und dies ganze Land soll zur Wüstenei und zum Gegenstand des Entsetzens werden und alle diese Völker sollen dem Könige von Babylon dienstbar werden siebzig Jahre lang.

Und wenn siebzig Jahre vollendet sind, werde ich an dem Könige von Babylon und seinem Volke und dem Lande der Chaldäer deren Schuld ahnden, spricht der Herr, und werde dies Land auf ewig zur Wüstenei machen.

Und ich werde an diesem Lande alle meine Worte, die ich wider dasselbe geredet habe, in Erfüllung gehen lassen, alles, was in diesem Buche geschrieben ist, alles, was Jeremias wider alle Völker geweissagt hat.

Denn sie werden ihnen dienstbar werden, da ihrer viele Völker und große Könige sind, und ich werde ihnen vergelten nach ihren Werken und nach ihrem eigenen Tun.

Gericht über die Nationen

Denn also spricht der Herr der Heerscharen, der Gott Israels: Nimm den Becher dieses Zornweines aus meiner Hand und lasse aus ihm alle meine Völker trinken, zu welchen ich dich senden werde.

Sie sollen trinken und taumeln und toll werden vor dem Schwerte, welches ich unter ihnen senden werde.

Da nahm ich den Becher aus der Hand des Herrn und ließ ihn alle Völker trinken, zu welchen der Herr mich sandte:

Jerusalem und die Städte Judas, ihre Könige und ihre Fürsten, um sie zur Wüstenei, zum Gegenstand des Entsetzens, des Spottes und des Fluches zu machen, wie es an diesem Tage der Fall ist;

Pharao, den König von Ägypten, und seine Diener, seine Fürsten samt seinem ganzen Volke,

und alle insgesamt, alle Könige im Lande Ausis, alle Könige im Lande der Philister, in Askalon, Gaza, Akkaron und den Überresten von Azot;

Idumäa, Moab und die Söhne Ammons;

alle Könige von Tyrus, alle Könige von Sidon und die Könige des Insellandes, welche jenseits des Meeres sind;

Dedan, Thema und Buz und alle, die geschorenes Haar tragen,

und alle Könige Arabiens und alle Könige des Westens, welche in der Wüste wohnen;

dazu alle Könige von Zambri, alle Könige von Elam und alle Könige der Meder;

auch alle Könige des Nordens, nahe wie ferne, den einen wie den andern und alle Königreiche der Erde, die auf derselben sind; und nach diesen soll der König von Sesach trinken.

Sage zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen, der Gott Israels: Trinket, dass ihr trunken werdet und speiet; und fallet nieder und stehet nicht wieder auf vor dem Schwerte, das ich unter euch senden werde!

Wenn sie sich aber weigern, den Kelch aus deiner Hand zu nehmen, um zu trinken, so sage zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen: Ihr müsst trinken!

Denn sehet, bei der Stadt, über die mein Name angerufen ist, fange ich an zu strafen, und ihr solltet, als ob ihr unschuldig wäret, ungestraft bleiben? Ihr sollt nicht ungestraft bleiben, denn ich rufe das Schwert wider alle Bewohner der Erde auf, spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

Du aber sollst ihnen alle diese Worte weissagen und so zu ihnen sagen: Der Herr wird von der Höhe her Gebrüll erschallen lassen und seine Stimme aus seiner heiligen Wohnung erheben, laut wird er über den Ort seiner Herrlichkeit brüllen; ein lautes Rufen wie das der Keltertreter wird ertönen wider alle Bewohner der Erde.

Der Schall wird bis an das Ende der Erde dringen, denn der Herr hält Gericht über die Völker und rechtet mit allen Menschen; die Gottlosen gebe ich dem Schwerte preis, spricht der Herr.

So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen: Siehe, Unglück wird von einem Volk zum andern Volk ausgehen und ein großes Ungewitter sich erheben von den Enden der Erde.

Und die vom Herrn Erschlagenen werden an jenem Tage von einem Ende der Erde bis zum andern hingestreckt liegen, nicht wird man ihnen Totenklage halten und sie nicht aufsammeln noch begraben; als Dünger werden sie auf dem Erdboden liegen bleiben.

Heulet, ihr Hirten! und wehklaget, bestreuet euch mit Asche, ihr ersten der Herde! Denn eure Zeit ist da, dass ihr geschlachtet werdet; die Zeit eurer Zertrümmerung, ihr sollt zu Boden fallen, wie kostbare Gefäße.

Für die Hirten gibt es keine Flucht mehr und keine Rettung für die Vornehmsten der Herde.

Horch! Angstruf der Hirten und Wehegeschrei der Ersten der Herde, denn der Herr hat ihre Triften verwüstet.

Die Gefilde des Friedens liegen verödet vor dem grimmigen Zorne des Herrn.

Er hat gleich einem Löwen sein Dickicht verlassen, denn ihr Land ist zur Wüstenei geworden vor dem Zorne der Taube und vor dem grimmigen Dräuen des Herrn.
