The Prophet Ezekiel

- Kapitel 31 -

In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: ‘Who can be compared to your greatness?

Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches that shaded the forest. It towered on high; its top was among the clouds.

The waters made it grow; the deep springs made it tall, directing their streams all around its base and sending their channels to all the trees of the field.

Therefore it towered higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long as it spread them out because of the abundant waters.

All the birds of the air nested in its branches, and all the beasts of the field gave birth beneath its boughs; all the great nations lived in its shade.

It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its limbs, for its roots extended to abundant waters.

The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the cypresses (a) could not compare with its branches, nor the plane trees

match its boughs. No tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty.

I made it beautiful with its many branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God.’

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Since it became great

in height and set its top among the clouds,(d) and it grew proud on account of its height,

I delivered it into the hand of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with it according to its wickedness. I have banished it.

Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. And all the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it.

All the birds of the air nested on its fallen trunk, and all the beasts of the field lived among its boughs.

This happened so that no other trees by the waters would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.

I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below.

They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies they had lived in its shade among the nations.

Who then is like you in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? You also will be brought down to the depths of the earth to be with the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”

Ägypten wird wie ein großer Baum umgehauen

Und es geschah im elften Jahre, im dritten Monat, am ersten des Monats, da erging an mich das Wort des Herrn also:

Menschensohn! sprich zu Pharao, dem Könige von Ägypten, und zu seinem Volke: Wem bist du gleich geworden in deiner Größe?

Siehe, Assur war wie eine Zeder auf dem Libanon, schön von Geäst und mit reichem Laube bedeckt, doch an Wuchs und unter dichten Zweigen erhob sich sein Wipfel.

Wasser hatten ihn großgezogen, die Flut ihn emporgebracht, seine Ströme flossen rings um seine Wurzeln und er sandte seine Abflüsse zu allen Bäumen des Gefildes.

Darum ward sein Wuchs höher als alle Bäume des Gefildes und seine Äste mehrten sich und seine Zweige wuchsen hoch ob des reichlichen Wassers.

Da er nun seinen Schatten weithin warf, nisteten alle Vögel des Himmels auf seinen Ästen und unter seinem Gezweige gebaren alle Tiere des Waldes und unter seinem Schattendache fanden Scharen zahlreicher Völker Wohnung.

Er war sehr schön in seiner Größe und in seiner Zweige weitem Umfange, denn seine Wurzeln hatten reichliches Wasser.

Höhere Zedern denn er waren nicht im Paradiese Gottes, Tannen kamen ihm nicht gleich an Höhe und die Ahornbäume hatten kein Gezweig wie er, kein Baum des Paradieses Gottes war ihm zu vergleichen in seiner Schönheit.

Denn ich hatte ihn schön gemacht in der Fülle seiner laubreichen Zweige und es beneideten ihn alle Bäume der Wonne, welche im Paradiese Gottes waren.

Darum spricht der Herr, Gott: Dafür dass er zu solcher Höhe emporgewachsen ist und seine grünen und laubreichen Zweige erhob und sein Herz ob seiner Höhe hochmütig ward,

darum will ich ihn in die Hand des Mächtigsten unter den Völkern hingeben, der nach Gutdünken mit ihm umgehen soll; seiner Bosheit gemäß werde ich ihn verstoßen.

Fremde sollen ihn fällen, die Grausamsten unter den Völkern, und ihn auf die Berge hinstrecken; in alle Täler fallen seine Zweige hin und an allen Felsen des Landes zerschmettern seine Äste und aus seinem Schatten ziehen alle Völker der Erde weg und verlassen ihn.

Auf seinen Stumpf lassen sich alle Vögel des Himmels nieder, auf seine Äste alle Tiere der Flur.

Darum soll sich kein Baum am Wasser erheben ob seiner Höhe noch seinen Wipfel zwischen grünen und laubreichen Zweigen erheben noch vom Wasser getränkt auf seine Höhe pochen, denn alle sind sie dem Tode preisgegeben, in der Erde Tiefen, inmitten der Menschenkinder zu denen hin, die zur Erde hinabfahren.

So spricht der Herr, Gott: Am Tage, da er zur Unterwelt hinabfuhr, führte ich Trauer herbei und ließ ihn in Abgründe versinken, hemmte seine Flüsse und seine vielen Wasser hielt ich zurück und es trauerte über ihn der Libanon und alle Bäume des Feldes erbebten.

Von dem Getöse seines Sturzes machte ich die Völker erzittern, als ich ihn zur Unterwelt hinabstieß, zu denen, welche in die Grube fahren; und es trösteten sich in der Erde Tiefen alle auserlesenen Bäume der Wonne und die trefflichsten auf dem Libanon, alle, die von Wassern getränkt werden.

Denn auch jene fuhren mit ihm zur Unterwelt hinab zu den durch das Schwert Erschlagenen; alle, die ihm halfen, saßen unter seinem Schatten in der Mitte der Völker.

Wem bist du zu vergleichen, du herrlicher und hochgewachsener unter den Bäumen der Wonne? Siehe, hinabgestoßen bist du zu den Bäumen der Wonne in die Unterwelt, inmitten der Unbeschnittenen wirst du schlafen, bei denen, die durch das Schwert gefallen sind; also ergeht es Pharao und seinem ganzen Heere, spricht der Herr, Gott.
