- Kapitel 17 -

And there came one of the seven messengers, who were having the seven bowls, and he spoke with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show to you the judgment of the great whore, who is sitting on the many waters,

with whom the kings of the earth committed whoredom; and those inhabiting the earth were made drunk from the wine of her whoredom”;

and he carried me away to a wilderness in the Spirit, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of slander, having seven heads and ten horns,

and the woman was clothed with purple and scarlet-color, and gilded with gold, and precious stone, and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and uncleanness of her whoredom,

and on her forehead was a name written: “SECRET, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE WHORES, AND THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

The Mystery Explained

And I saw the woman drunken from the blood of the holy ones, and from the blood of the witnesses of Jesus, and I wondered—having seen her—with great wonder;

and the messenger said to me, “For this reason did you wonder? I will tell you the secret of the woman and of the beast that [is] carrying her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.

The beast that you saw: it was, and it is not, and it is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go away to destruction, and those dwelling on the earth will wonder, whose names have not been written on the Scroll of Life from the foundation of the world, beholding the beast that was, and is not, although it is.

Here [is] the mind that is having wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits,

and there are seven kings, the five fell, and the one is, the other did not yet come, and when he may come, it is necessary for him to remain a short time;

and the beast that was, and is not, he also is eighth, and he is out of the seven, and he goes away to destruction.

And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who did not yet receive a kingdom, but receive authority as kings one hour with the beast;

these have one mind, and they will give over their own power and authority to the beast;

The Victory of the Lamb

these will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and those with Him are called, and chosen, and steadfast.”

And he says to me, “The waters that you saw, where the whore sits, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues;

and the ten horns that you saw, and the beast, these will hate the whore, and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh, and will burn her in fire,

for God gave into their hearts to do His purpose, and to make one purpose, and to give their kingdom to the beast until the sayings of God may be fulfilled,

and the woman that you saw is the great city that is having reign over the kings of the earth.”

Die scharlachrote Frau und das scharlachrote Tier

Und es kam einer von den sieben Engeln, welche die sieben Schalen hatten, und redete mit mir, und sprach: Komm, ich will dir die Verurteilung der großen Buhlerin zeigen, die an den vielen Gewässern sitzt,

mit welcher die Könige der Erde Unzucht getrieben, und die Bewohner der Erde wurden vom Weine ihrer Unzucht berauscht.

Und er führte mich im Geiste fort in eine Wüste. Da sah ich ein Weib sitzen auf einem scharlachroten Tiere, welches voll war von Lästernamen und sieben Köpfe und zehn Hörner hatte.

Und das Weib war bekleidet mit Purpur und Scharlach, bedeckt mit Gold, Edelsteinen und Perlen, und hatte einen goldenen Becher in ihrer Hand, voll von Greueln und von der Unreinigkeit ihrer Unzucht.

Auf ihrer Stirne war ein Name geschrieben: Geheimnis! Babylon, das große, die Mutter aller Unzucht und Greuel auf Erden.

Und ich sah das Weib trunken vom Blute der Heiligen und vom Blute der Zeugen Jesu. Und ich verwunderte mich überaus, als ich dieselbe sah.

Die Bedeutung der Frau und des Tieres

Da sprach der Engel zu mir: Warum verwunderst du dich? Ich will dir das Geheimnis des Weibes sagen, und des Tieres, welche sie trägt, das die sieben Häupter und die zehn Hörner hat.

Das Tier, welches du gesehen hast, war, und ist nicht, und es wird heraufsteigen aus dem Abgrund und in´s Verderben hinfahren; und es werden sich die Bewohner der Erde verwundern (deren Namen nicht geschrieben sind im Buche des Lebens von Grundlegung der Welt an), wenn sie das Tier sehen, das war und nicht ist.

Hier zeigt sich der Verstand, der Weisheit hat: Die sieben Häupter sind sieben Berge, auf welchen das Weib sitzt, und sind sieben Könige.

Fünf sind gefallen, der eine ist, und der andere ist noch nicht gekommen; und wenn er kommt, so soll er nur kurze Zeit bleiben.

Und das Tier, welches war und nicht ist, es ist selbst der Achte, und doch einer von den sieben, und geht hin in´s Verderben.

Und die zehn Hörner, die du gesehen hast, sind zehn Könige, welche noch kein Königtum empfangen haben, aber sie werden Macht als Könige empfangen auf eine einzige Stunde unter dem Tiere.

Diese haben einerlei Sinn und werden ihre Kraft und Macht dem Tiere geben.

Sie werden mit dem Lamme kämpfen, aber das Lamm wird sie überwinden; denn es ist der Herr der Herren und der König der Könige, und die mit ihm sind, sind die Berufenen, Auserwählten und Getreuen.

Und er sprach zu mir: Die Gewässer, die du gesehen hast, wo die Buhlerin sitzt, sind Völker und Nationen und Zungen.

Und die zehn Hörner, die du an dem Tiere gesehen hast, diese werden die Buhlerin hassen, und werden sie verödet machen und entblößet, und ihr Fleisch verzehren, und sie mit Feuer verbrennen.

Denn Gott hat es ihnen in´s Herz gegeben, zu tun, was ihm wohlgefällig ist, ihr Reich dem Tiere zu geben, bis die Worte Gottes vollendet sind.

Und das Weib, das du gesehen hast, ist die große Stadt, welche die Herrschaft hat über die Könige der Erde.
