The Book of Nehemiah

- Kapitel 8 -

(Deuteronomy 31:9-13)

And all the people are gathered as one man to the broad place that [is] before the Water Gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the Scroll of the Law of Moses, that YHWH commanded Israel.

And Ezra the priest brings the Law before the assembly, both of men and women, and everyone intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

and he reads in it before the broad place that [is] before the Water Gate, from the light until the middle of the day, in front of the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people [are] toward the Scroll of the Law.

And Ezra the scribe stands on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah stands near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

And Ezra opens the scroll before the eyes of all the people—for he has been above all the people—and at his opening [it] all the people have stood up,

and Ezra blesses YHWH, the great God, and all the people answer, “Amen, Amen,” with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and pay respect to YHWH—faces to the earth.

And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the Law, and the people, [are] on their station,

and they read in the Scroll, in the Law of God, explaining—so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

And Nehemiah—he [is] the Tirshatha—says (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, “Today is holy to your God YHWH, do not mourn, nor weep”: for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the Law.

And he says to them, “Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today [is] holy to our Lord, and do not be grieved, for the joy of YHWH is your strength.”

And the Levites are keeping all the people silent, saying, “Be silent, for today [is] holy, and do not be grieved.”

And all the people go to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, because they have understood concerning the words that they made known to them.

The Feast of Tabernacles

(Leviticus 23:33-44; Zechariah 14:16-21)

And on the second day have been gathered heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to act wisely concerning the words of the Law.

And they find written in the Law that YHWH commanded by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel dwell in shelters in the celebration, in the seventh month,

and that they proclaim and cause to pass over all their cities (and in Jerusalem), saying, “Go out to the mountain, and bring leaves of the olive, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of the myrtle, and leaves of the palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make shelters as it is written.”

And the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves shelters, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the Water Gate, and in the broad place of the Gate of Ephraim.

And they make—all the assembly of the captives of the captivity—shelters, and they sit in shelters; for the sons of Israel had not done, from the days of Jeshua son of Nun, so to that day, and there is very great joy.

And he reads in the Scroll of the Law of God day by day, from the first day until the last day, and they make a celebration seven days, and on the eighth day a restraint, according to the ordinance.

(5. Mose 31,9-13)

Als nun der siebte Monat herankam, waren die Söhne Israels in ihren Städten. Da versammelte sich alles Volk wie ein Mann auf dem Platze vor dem Wassertore und sie sagten zu Esdras, dem Schriftgelehrten, er solle das Buch des Gesetzes Moses herbeibringen, das der Herr für Israel gegeben hatte.

Da brachte Esdras, der Priester, das Gesetz vor die Versammlung der Männer und Frauen und vor alle, die es verstehen konnten, am ersten Tage des siebten Monats.

Und er las daraus, auf dem Platze vor dem Wassertore, laut vor, vom Morgen bis zum Mittage, in Gegenwart der Männer und Frauen und derer, die es verstehen konnten; und die Ohren des ganzen Volkes lauschten auf das Buch.

Esdras aber, der Schriftgelehrte, stand auf einer Erhöhung von Holz, welche er gemacht hatte, um von dort herab zu reden, und neben ihm standen Mathathias, Semeja, Ania, Uria, Helkia und Maasia zu seiner Rechten, und zur Linken Phadaja, Misael, Melchia, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacharias und Mosollam.

Und Esdras öffnete das Buch vor dem ganzen Volke, denn er ragte über das ganze Volk empor; und als er es öffnete, stand das ganze Volk.

Dann lobte Esdras den Herrn, den großen Gott, und das ganze Volk antwortete: Amen, Amen! Indem sie ihre Hände aufhoben und sich verneigten und Gott anbeteten, das Angesicht zur Erde gebeugt.

Und Josue, Bani, Serebia, Jamin, Akkub, Septhai, Odia, Maasia, Kelita, Azarias, Jozabed, Hanan und Phalaja, die Leviten, sorgten für die Stille unter dem Volke, damit es das Gesetz hören konnte; das Volk aber stand an seiner Stelle.

Da lasen sie aus dem Buche des Gesetzes Gottes deutlich und das Verständnis vermittelnd vor, so dass jene es verstanden, als es gelesen wurde.

Nehemias aber (das ist der Athersatha) und Esdras, der Priester und Schriftgelehrte, und die Leviten, welche dem ganzen Volke die Auslegung gaben, sprachen: Dieser Tag ist dem Herrn, unserm Gott, geheiligt! seid nicht traurig und weinet nicht. Denn das ganze Volk weinte, als es die Worte des Gesetzes hörte.

Dann sprach er zu ihnen: Gehet hin, esset Fettstücke und trinket süße Getränke und sendet denen, die nichts für sich vorrätig haben, Anteile, denn der Tag ist dem Herrn geheiligt; und seid nicht traurig, denn die Freude im Herrn ist unsere Stärke.

Die Leviten aber beruhigten das ganze Volk und sprachen: Seid stille! denn der Tag ist heilig, und seid nicht bekümmert.

Da ging alles Volk hinweg, um zu essen und zu trinken und Anteile zu versenden und große Freude zu veranstalten, denn sie hatten die Worte verstanden, die er sie gelehrt hatte.

Das Laubhüttenfest

(3. Mose 23,33-44; Sacharja 14,16-21)

Am zweiten Tage versammelten sich die Häupter der Geschlechter des ganzen Volkes, die Priester und Leviten, bei Esdras, dem Schriftgelehrten, dass er ihnen die Worte des Gesetzes erklärte.

Und sie fanden im Gesetze geschrieben, dass der Herr durch Moses befohlen habe, die Söhne Israels sollten an dem Feste im siebten Monate in Hütten wohnen

und sollten in allen ihren Städten und in Jerusalem ausrufen und laut verkünden und sagen: Gehet hinaus auf das Gebirge und holet Ölzweige und Zweige von den schönsten Bäumen, Myrtenzweige und Palmenzweige und Zweige von laubreichen Bäumen, um Hütten zu machen, wie geschrieben steht.

Da ging das Volk hinaus und sie holten solche. Und ein jeder machte sich Hütten auf seinem Dache oder in seinem Hofe oder in dem Vorhofe des Hauses Gottes oder auf dem Platze am Wassertore oder auf dem Platze am Tore Ephraim.

So machte die ganze Gemeinde derer, welche aus der Gefangenschaft zurückgekehrt waren, Hütten und sie wohnten in den Hütten, denn die Söhne Israels hatten solches von den Tagen Josues, des Sohnes Nuns, bis auf diesen Tag nicht getan. Und es herrschte eine sehr große Freude.

Er las aber aus dem Buche des Gesetzes Gottes Tag für Tag, vom ersten Tage bis zum letzten Tage; und sie feierten das Fest sieben Tage lang und am achten Tage die Versammlung nach der Vorschrift.
