- Kapitel 7 -

And Jerubba‘al (he [is] Gideon) rises early, and all the people who [are] with him, and they encamp by the well of Harod, and the camp of Midian has been on the south of him, on the height of Moreh, in the valley.

And YHWH says to Gideon, “The people who [are] with you [are] too many for My giving Midian into their hand, lest Israel beautify itself against Me, saying, My hand has given salvation to me;

and now, please call in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever [is] afraid and trembling, let him turn back and go early from Mount Gilead”; and there return twenty-two thousand of the people, and ten thousand have been left.

And YHWH says to Gideon, “The people [are] yet too many; bring them down to the water, and I refine him for you there; and it has been, he of whom I say to you, This goes with you—he goes with you; and any of whom I say to you, This does not go with you—he does not go.”

And he brings the people down to the water, and YHWH says to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue as the dog laps—you set him apart; also everyone who bows on his knees to drink.”

And the number of those lapping with their hand to their mouth is three hundred men, and all the rest of the people have bowed down on their knees to drink water.

And YHWH says to Gideon, “I save you by the three hundred men who are lapping, and have given Midian into your hand, and all the people go, each to his place.”

And the people take the provision in their hand, and their horns, and he has sent every man of Israel away, each to his tents; and he has kept hold on the three hundred men, and the camp of Midian has been by him at the lower part of the valley.

The Sword of Gideon

And it comes to pass, on that night, that YHWH says to him, “Rise, go down into the camp, for I have given it into your hand;

and if you are afraid to go down—go down, you and your young man Phurah, to the camp,

and you have heard what they speak, and afterward your hands are strengthened, and you have gone down against the camp.” And he goes down, he and his young man Phurah, to the extremity of the fifties who [are] in the camp;

and Midian, and Amalek, and all the sons of the east are lying in the valley, as the locust for multitude, and of their camels there is no number, as sand which [is] on the seashore for multitude.

And Gideon comes in, and behold, a man is recounting a dream to his companion, and says, “Behold, I have dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley-bread is turning itself over into the camp of Midian, and it comes to the tent, and strikes it, and it falls, and turns it upwards, and the tent has fallen.”

And his companion answers and says, “This is nothing except the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given Midian and all the camp into his hand.”

Gideon Defeats Midian

And it comes to pass, when Gideon hears the narration of the dream and its interpretation, that he bows himself, and turns back to the camp of Israel, and says, “Rise, for YHWH has given the camp of Midian into your hand.”

And he divides the three hundred men [into] three detachments, and puts horns into the hand of all of them, and empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

And he says to them, “Look at me, and thus do; and behold, I am coming into the extremity of the camp—and it has been—as I do so you do;

and I have blown with a horn—I and all who [are] with me, and you have blown with horns, even you, around all the camp, and have said, For YHWH and for Gideon!”

And Gideon comes—and the hundred men who [are] with him—into the extremity of the camp, [at] the beginning of the middle watch (they had just posted watchmen), and they blow with horns—also dashing in pieces the pitchers which [are] in their hand;

and the three detachments blow with horns, and break the pitchers, and keep hold with their left hand on the lamps, and with their right hand on the horns to blow, and they cry, “The sword of YHWH and of Gideon!”

And they each stand in his place, around the camp, and all the camp runs, and they shout, and flee;

and the three hundred blow the horns, and YHWH sets the sword of each against his companion, even through all the camp; and the camp flees to Beth-Shittah, at Zererath, to the border of Abel-Meholah, by Tabbath.

And the men of Israel are called from Naphtali, and from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and pursue after Midian.

And Gideon has sent messengers into all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down to meet Midian, and capture the waters from them as far as Beth-Barah, and the Jordan”; and every man of Ephraim is called, and they capture the waters as far as Beth-Barah, and the Jordan,

and they capture two of the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and slay Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and they have slain Zeeb at the wine-vat of Zeeb, and they pursue into Midian; and they have brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Gideons tapfere Dreihundert

Jerobaal also, das ist Gedeon, machte sich des Nachts auf und alle, die mit ihm waren und kam zur Quelle, welche Harad heißt. Das Lager der Madianiter aber war im Tale auf der Nordseite des großen Hügels.

Da sprach der Herr zu Gedeon: Das Volk bei dir ist zu zahlreich, als dass Madian in seine Hand gegeben werden sollte, damit Israel sich nicht wider mich rühme und sage: Durch meine Kraft bin ich befreit worden.

Rede zu dem Volke und verkünde, so dass es alle hören: Wer furchtsam und verzagt ist, möge umkehren! Da gingen zweiundzwanzigtausend Mann von dem Volke, vom Berge Galaad hinweg und kehrten um und nur zehntausend blieben zurück.

Und der Herr sprach zu Gedeon: Noch ist das Volk zu zahlreich, führe sie zum Wasser, daselbst will ich sie prüfen. Von wem ich dir sagen werde, dass es mit dir ziehen soll, der ziehe mit; und wem ich mitzuziehen verbiete, der kehre zurück.

Als nun das Volk an das Wasser hinabkam, sprach er zu Gedeon: Diejenigen, welche das Wasser mit ihrer Zunge lecken, wie die Hunde zu lecken pflegen, stelle besonders; und diejenigen, welche niederknien, um zu trinken, sollen auf der andern Seite sein.

Da war die Zahl derer, welche die Hand zum Munde führten und das Wasser leckten, dreihundert Mann; das ganze übrige Volk aber trank kniend.

Da sprach der Herr zu Gedeon: Durch die dreihundert Mann, welche das Wasser leckten, werde ich euch befreien, und Madian in deine Hand geben; die ganze übrige Menge soll in ihre Heimat zurückkehren.

Für diese Zahl also nahm er Speise und Posaunen und ließ alles übrige Volk zu seinen Hütten ziehen; er selbst aber und die dreihundert Männer blieben zum Kampfe zurück. Das Lager der Madianiter aber war unten im Tale.

In derselben Nacht sprach der Herr zu ihm: mache dich auf und steige in das Lager hinab, denn ich habe sie in deine Hand gegeben.

Fürchtest du dich aber allein zu gehen, so möge Phara, dein Diener, mit dir hinabsteigen.

Wenn du gehört hast, was sie reden, so wird deine Hand stark werden und du zuversichtlicher in das Lager der Feinde hinabsteigen. Da ging er mit seinem Diener Phara an den Teil des Lagers hinab, wo die Wachen waren.

Die Madianiter aber und die Amalekiter und alle Völker aus dem Osten lagen im Tale zahlreich weithin, wie Heuschreckenscharen; auch die Kamele waren unzählbar, wie der Sand, der am Ufer des Meeres liegt.

Als nun Gedeon herankam, erzählte einer seinem Nachbarn einen Traum und teilte ihm so mit, was er gesehen hatte: Ich hatte einen Traum und es schien mir, als rolle sich ein unter der Asche gebackenes Gerstenbrot daher und in das Lager der Madianiter herab; und als es an das Zelt kam, stieß es an dasselbe so an, dass dies umgeworfen ward und auf der Erde lag.

Da antwortete der, zu welchem er sprach: Das ist nichts anderes als das Schwert Gedeons, des Sohnes des Joas, des Israeliten; denn der Herr hat die Madianiter und ihr ganzes Lager in seine Hand gegeben.

Als Gedeon den Traum und dessen Auslegung gehört hatte, betete er an und kehrte in das Lager Israels zurück und sprach: Auf! Denn der Herr hat das Lager Madians in unsere Hände gegeben.

Alsdann teilte er die dreihundert Mann in drei Heerhaufen und gab ihnen Posaunen und leere Krüge in die Hände und mitten in die Krüge Fackeln.

Dann sprach er zu ihnen: Was ihr mich tun sehet, das tuet auch; ich werde an einer Seite des Lagers eindringen, und was ich dann tun werde, tuet mir nach.

Wenn die Posaune in meiner Hand erschallt, so blaset auch ihr rings um das Lager herum und rufet: Für den Herrn und Gedeon!

Und Gedeon und die dreihundert Männer, die mit ihm waren, drangen in den äußersten Teil des Lagers zu Anfang der mittleren Nachtwache ein, als man eben die Wachen aufgestellt hatte, und fingen an, die Posaunen zu blasen und die Krüge aneinander zu schlagen.

Rings um das Lager bliesen sie an drei Orten und zerschlugen die Krüge, dann nahmen sie in die linke Hand die Fackeln, und in die rechte die Posaunen, mit denen sie bliesen, und riefen: Schwert des Herrn und Gedeons!

Dabei blieben sie ein jeder an seinem Platze stehen, rings um das Lager der Feinde her. So kam im Lager alles in Verwirrung und schreiend und heulend flohen sie davon.

Die dreihundert Männer aber ließen nicht nach und bliesen mit den Posaunen. Da ließ der Herr das Schwert in dem ganzen Lager wüten, und sie töteten sich einander.

und flohen bis nach Bethsetta, und an die Höhe von Abel-Mehula in Tebbath. Die Männer Israels aber von Nephthali, Aser und ganz Manasse erhoben ein Feldgeschrei und verfolgten die Madianiter.

Auch sandte Gedeon Boten auf das ganze Gebirge Ephraim und ließ sagen: Kommet herab den Madianitern entgegen und besetzet das Wasser bis nach Bethbera und an den Jordan hin. Da erhob ganz Ephraim ein Feldgeschrei und besetzte das Wasser und den Jordan bis nach Bethbera.

Und sie nahmen zwei Fürsten der Madianiter, Oreb und Zeb, gefangen und töteten Oreb an dem Felsen Oreb, Zeb aber bei der Kelter Zeb. Und sie verfolgten Madian; die Häupter Orebs und Zebs aber brachten sie zu Gedeon, jenseits des Jordans.
