- Kapitel 34 -

The word that has been to Jeremiah from YHWH—and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his force, and all kingdoms of the land of the dominion of his hand, and all the peoples are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all its cities—saying:

“Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: Go, and you have spoken to Zedekiah king of Judah, and have said to him, Thus said YHWH: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he has burned it with fire,

and you do not escape out of his hand, for you are certainly caught, and you are given into his hand, and your eyes see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth speaks with your mouth, and you enter Babylon.

Only, hear a word of YHWH, O Zedekiah king of Judah—thus said YHWH to you: You do not die by sword,

you die in peace, and with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings who have been before you, so they make a burning for you; and, Oh, lord, they lament for you, for the word I have spoken—a declaration of YHWH.”

And Jeremiah the prophet speaks all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,

and the forces of the king of Babylon are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that are left—against Lachish, and against Azekah, for these have been left among the cities of Judah, cities of fortresses.

Freedom for Hebrew Slaves

The word that has been to Jeremiah from YHWH, after the making of a covenant by King Zedekiah with all the people who [are] in Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them,

to each send out his manservant, and each his maidservant—the Hebrew and the Hebrewess—free, so as not to lay service on them—on any Jew, a brother, a man;

and all the heads listen, and all the people who have come into the covenant to each send forth his manservant and each his maidservant free, so as not to lay service on them anymore, indeed, they listen, and send them away;

and they turn afterward, and cause the menservants and the maidservants to return, whom they had sent forth free, and they subdue them for menservants and for maidservants.

And there is a word of YHWH to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying,

“Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day of My bringing them forth from the land of Egypt, from a house of servants, saying,

At the end of seven years you each send forth his brother, the Hebrew, who is sold to you, and has served you six years, indeed, you have sent him forth from you free: and your fathers did not listen to Me, nor inclined their ear.

And today you turn back and you do that which is right in My eyes, to each proclaim liberty to his neighbor, and you make a covenant before Me in the house over which My Name is called.

And you turn back, and defile My Name, and you each cause his manservant and each his maidservant, whom he had sent forth free (at their pleasure), to return, and you subdue them to be for menservants and for maidservants to you.”

Therefore, thus said YHWH: “You have not listened to Me to proclaim freedom, each to his brother, and each to his neighbor; behold, I am proclaiming to you liberty,” a declaration of YHWH, “to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine, and I have given you for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth.

And I have given the men who are transgressing My covenant, who have not established the words of the covenant that they have made before Me, by the calf, that they have cut in two, and pass through between its pieces—

heads of Judah, and heads of Jerusalem, the officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land who had passed through between the pieces of the calf—

indeed, I have given them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and their carcass has been for food to the bird of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth.

And I give Zedekiah king of Judah and his heads into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and into the hand of the forces of the king of Babylon that are going up from off you.

Behold, I am commanding,” a declaration of YHWH, “and have brought them back to this city, and they have fought against it, and captured it, and burned it with fire, and I make the cities of Judah a desolation—without inhabitant.”

Zedekia wird von Gott gewarnt

Wort, welches an Jeremias von dem Herrn erging, als Nabuchodonosor, der König von Babylon, und dessen ganzes Heer und alle Reiche der Erde, die seiner Herrschaft unterworfen waren, und alle Völker gegen Jerusalem und gegen alle dazu gehörigen Städte kämpften, also lautend:

So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Gehe hin und sprich zu Sedekias, dem Könige von Juda, und sage zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Siehe, ich will diese Stadt in die Hand des Königs von Babylon überliefern, dass er sie mit Feuer niederbrenne.

Auch du sollst seiner Hand nicht entrinnen, sondern wirst ergriffen und in seine Hand überliefert werden und wirst den König von Babylon sehen Auge in Auge und von Mund zu Mund mit ihm reden und wirst nach Babylon kommen.

Doch höre das Wort des Herrn, Sedekias, König von Juda! So spricht der Herr zu dir: Du sollst nicht durch das Schwert sterben,

sondern in Frieden wirst du sterben und so wie für deine Väter, die früheren Könige, die vor dir herrschten, Verbrennungen stattfanden, so werden sie auch für dich anzünden und werden um dich klagen „Ach Gebieter!“ denn ich habe dies Wort geredet, spricht der Herr!

Und Jeremias, der Prophet, redete zu Sedekias, dem Könige von Juda, alle diese Worte in Jerusalem.

Während das Heer des Königs von Babylon aber Jerusalem und alle Städte von Juda, die noch übrig waren, belagerte, Lachis und Azecha, denn diese waren unter den festen Städten Judas noch übrig,

Verräterische Behandlung der Knechte

erging das Wort an Jeremias von dem Herrn, als Sedekias mit allem Volke zu Jerusalem eine Übereinkunft geschlossen und hatte ausrufen lassen, also lautend:

dass ein jeder seinen Knecht und ein jeder seine Magd, Hebräer und Hebräerin, freilassen und dass keiner sie mehr, als Juden und seine Brüder, dienstbar machen dürfe.

Da gehorchten alle Fürsten und das gesamte Volk, welche das Versprechen eingegangen waren, dass jeder seinen Knecht und jeder seine Magd freiließ und ferner nicht mehr dienstbar machte; sie gehorchten und entließen sie.

Darnach aber wurden sie anderen Sinnes und holten ihre Knechte und Mägde, die sie freigelassen hatten, wieder zurück und zwangen sie mit Gewalt, als Knechte und Mägde zu dienen.

Da erging das Wort des Herrn an Jeremias von dem Herrn also:

So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Ich habe mit euern Vätern einen Bund geschlossen am Tage, da ich sie aus dem Lande Ägypten, aus dem Hause der Dienstbarkeit herausführte, indem ich sprach:

Nach Ablauf von sieben Jahren soll ein jeder seinen Bruder, der ein Hebräer ist und sich ihm verkauft hat, freigeben; hat er dir sechs Jahre gedient, so sollst du ihn freilassen; aber eure Väter hörten nicht auf mich und neigten nicht ihr Ohr.

Da bekehrtet ihr euch jetzt und tatet, was recht in meinen Augen, indem ein jeder von euch für seinen Nächsten Freiheit ausrief und vor meinem Angesicht im Hause, über welches mein Name angerufen ist, eine Übereinkunft schloss.

Jedoch ihr seid wieder abwendig geworden und habt meinen Namen entweiht und holtet ein jeder seinen Knecht zurück und ein jeder seine Magd, die ihr entlassen, dass sie frei und ihre eigenen Herren seien, und zwanget sie mit Gewalt, eure Knechte und Mägde zu sein.

Darum spricht der Herr also: Ihr habt nicht auf mich gehört, dass ihr Freiheit ausgerufen hättet und jeder für seinen Bruder und ein jeder für seinen Nächsten; sehet, so rufe ich nun für euch Freiheit aus, spricht der Herr, Freiheit für das Schwert, für die Seuche und für den Hunger und gebe euch zur Misshandlung allen Reichen der Erde hin.

Und die Männer, welche meinen Bund übertreten und die Bestimmung der Übereinkunft, die sie vor meinem Angesichte geschlossen, nicht gehalten haben, will ich wie das Kalb machen, welches sie in zwei Stücke gehauen und zwischen dessen Teilen sie hindurchgegangen sind;

die Fürsten von Juda und die Fürsten von Jerusalem, die Kämmerer und die Priester und das ganze Volk des Landes, welches zwischen den Teilen des Kalbes hindurchgegangen sind;

Ja, ich will sie in die Hand ihrer Feinde und in die Hand derer überliefern, welche ihnen nach dem Leben trachten, und ihre Leichname sollen den Vögeln des Himmels und den Tieren auf Erden zum Fraße werden.

Auch Sedekias, den König von Juda, und seine Fürsten will ich in die Hand ihrer Feinde überliefern und in die Hand derer, die ihnen nach dem Leben trachten, und in die Hand der Heeresmacht des Königs von Babylon, die von euch abgezogen ist.

Sehet, ich befehle, spricht der Herr, und werde sie vor dieser Stadt zurückbringen, dass sie wider dieselbe kämpfen und sie einnehmen und in Brand stecken; und ich werde die Städte von Juda zur Wüstenei machen, dass niemand darin wohnen soll.
