The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

- Kapitel 21 -

The word that has been to Jeremiah from YHWH, in King Zedekiah’s sending to him Pashhur son of Malchiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

“Please inquire of YHWH for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has fought against us; perhaps YHWH deals with us according to all His wonders, and causes him to go up from off us.”

And Jeremiah says to them, “Thus you say to Zedekiah,

Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: Behold, I am turning around the weapons of battle || That [are] in your hand, || With which you fight the king of Babylon, || And the Chaldeans, who are laying siege against you, || At the outside of the wall, || And I have gathered them into the midst of this city,

And I have fought against you, || With an outstretched hand, and with a strong arm, || And in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath,

And I have struck the inhabitants of this city, || Both man and beast, || They die by a great pestilence.

And after this,” || A declaration of YHWH, || “I give Zedekiah king of Judah, || And his servants, and the people, || And those left in this city, || From the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, || Into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, || And into the hand of their enemies, || And into the hand of those seeking their life, || And he has struck them by the mouth of the sword, || He has no pity on them, || Nor does he spare, nor does he have mercy.”

“And you say to this people, Thus said YHWH: Behold, I am setting before you the way of life, || And the way of death!

Whoever is abiding in this city—dies, || By sword, and by famine, and by pestilence, || And whoever is going forth, || And has fallen to the Chaldeans, || Who are laying siege against you—lives, || And his life has been for a spoil to him.

For I have set My face against this city for calamity, || And not for good,” || A declaration of YHWH. “It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon, || And he has burned it with fire.

A Message to the House of David

And as for the house of the king of Judah,” || Hear a word of YHWH;

O house of David, thus said YHWH: “Decide judgment in the morning, || And deliver the plundered from the hand of the oppressor, || Lest My fury go forth as fire, || And has burned, and none is quenching, || Because of the evil of your doings.

Behold, I [am] against you,” || A declaration of YHWH, || “O inhabitant of the valley, rock of the plain, || Who are saying, Who comes down against us? And who comes into our habitations?

And I have laid a charge against you, || According to the fruit of your doings,” || A declaration of YHWH, || “And I have kindled a fire in its forest, || And it has consumed all its outskirts!”

Jerusalems Untergang ist besiegelt

Wort, welches an Jeremias von dem Herrn erging, als der König Sedekias Phassur, den Sohn Melchias, und Sophonias, den Sohn Maasias, den Priester, zu ihm sandte und sagen ließ:

Befrage den Herrn für uns, denn Nabuchodonosor, der König von Babylon, kämpft wider uns; vielleicht handelt der Herr gegen uns allen seinen Wundertaten gemäß und macht, dass jener von uns abziehen muss.

Jeremias aber sprach zu ihnen: So saget zu Sedekias:

Also spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Siehe, ich werde die Kriegswaffen in euern Händen, mit denen ihr wider den König von Babylon und die Chaldäer kämpft, die euch rings um die Mauern her belagern, umwenden und werde sie in die Mitte dieser Stadt zusammendrängen.

Und ich selbst werde wider euch mit ausgestreckter Hand und starkem Arme kämpfen, mit Grimm, Entrüstung und großem Zorne.

Und ich werde die Bewohner dieser Stadt schlagen, Menschen und Vieh sollen durch eine große Pest umkommen.

Darnach aber, spricht der Herr, will ich Sedekias, den König von Juda, und seine Diener, sein Volk und die, welche in dieser Stadt von der Pest, vom Schwerte und vom Hunger übriggeblieben sind, in die Hand Nabuchodonosors, des Königs von Babylon, und in die Hand derer überliefern, welche ihnen nach dem Leben trachten, und er wird sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlagen, unerbittlich, ohne Schonung und ohne Erbarmen.

Zu diesem Volke aber sollst du sagen: So spricht der Herr: Sehet, ich lege euch den Weg zum Leben und den Weg zum Tode vor.

Wer in dieser Stadt bleibt, wird durch Schwert, Hunger und Pest sterben; wer aber hinausgeht und sich zu den Chaldäern flüchtet, die euch belagern, wird leben bleiben und sein Leben als Beute davontragen.

denn ich habe mein Angesicht wider diese Stadt gerichtet zum Unheil und nicht zum Guten, spricht der Herr; in die Hand des Königs von Babylon wird sie überliefert werden, dass er sie mit Feuer niederbrenne.

Botschaft an das Haus David

Zum Hause des Königs von Juda sage: Höret das Wort des Herrn,

Haus Davids! So spricht der Herr: Haltet Gericht am Morgen und rettet den Unterdrückten aus der Gewalt des Unterdrückers, dass mein Grimm nicht etwa wie Feuer ausbreche und entbrenne, ohne dass jemand zu löschen vermag, um der Bosheit eurer Bestrebungen willen.

Siehe, spricht der Herr, ich will an dich kommen, Bewohnerin des festen ebenen Tales, an euch, die ihr sprecht: Wer will uns schlagen? wer sollte in unsere Häuser eindringen?

Und ich will euch, spricht der Herr, der Frucht eurer Bestrebungen gemäß heimsuchen und werde ein Feuer an ihren Wald legen, das alles ringsherum verzehren wird.
