- Kapitel 31 -

And he hears the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken all that our father has; indeed, from that which our father has, he has made all this glory”;

and Jacob sees the face of Laban, and behold, it is not with him as before.

And YHWH says to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your family, and I am with you.”

And Jacob sends and calls for Rachel and for Leah to the field to his flock;

and says to them, “I am beholding your father’s face—that it is not toward me as before, and the God of my father has been with me,

and you have known that with all my power I have served your father,

and your father has played on me, and has changed my hire ten times; and God has not permitted him to do evil with me.

If he says thus: The speckled are your hire, then all the flock bore speckled ones; and if he says thus: The striped are your hire, then all the flock bore striped;

and God takes away the substance of your father, and gives to me.

And it comes to pass at the time of the flock conceiving, that I lift up my eyes and see in a dream, and behold, the male goats, which are going up on the flock, [are] striped, speckled, and spotted;

and the Messenger of God says to me in the dream, Jacob, and I say, Here I [am].

And He says, Now lift up your eyes and see [that] all the male goats which are going up on the flock [are] striped, speckled, and spotted, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you;

I [am] the God of Bethel where you have anointed a standing pillar, where you have vowed a vow to me; now, arise, go out from this land, and return to the land of your birth.”

And Rachel answers—Leah also—and says to him, “Have we yet a portion and inheritance in the house of our father?

Have we not been reckoned strangers to him? For he has sold us, and he also utterly consumes our money;

for all the wealth which God has taken away from our father, it [is] ours, and our children’s; and now, all that God has said to you—do.”

And Jacob rises, and lifts up his sons and his wives on the camels,

and leads all his livestock, and all his substance which he has acquired, the livestock of his getting, which he has acquired in Padan-Aram, to go to his father Isaac, to the land of Canaan.

And Laban has gone to shear his flock, and Rachel steals the teraphim which her father has;

and Jacob deceives the heart of Laban the Aramean, because he has not declared to him that he is fleeing;

and he flees, he and all that he has, and rises, and passes over the River, and sets his face [toward] the Mount of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

And it is told to Laban on the third day that Jacob has fled,

and he takes his brothers with him, and pursues after him a journey of seven days, and overtakes him in the Mount of Gilead.

And God comes to Laban the Aramean in a dream of the night and says to him, “Take heed to yourself lest you speak with Jacob from good to evil.”

And Laban overtakes Jacob; and Jacob has fixed his tent in the mountain; and Laban with his brothers have fixed [theirs] in the Mount of Gilead.

And Laban says to Jacob, “What have you done that you deceive my heart, and lead away my daughters as captives of the sword?

Why have you hidden yourself to flee, and deceive me, and have not declared to me, and I send you away with joy and with songs, with tambourine and with harp,

and have not permitted me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have acted foolishly in doing [so];

my hand is to God to do evil with you, but the God of your father last night has spoken to me, saying, Take heed to yourself from speaking with Jacob from good to evil.

And now, you have certainly gone, because you have been very desirous for the house of your father; why have you stolen my gods?”

And Jacob answers and says to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I said, Lest you violently take away your daughters from me;

with whomsoever you find your gods—he must not live; before our brothers discern for yourself what [is] with me, and take to yourself”: and Jacob has not known that Rachel has stolen them.

And Laban goes into the tent of Jacob, and into the tent of Leah, and into the tent of the two handmaidens, and has not found; and he goes out from the tent of Leah, and goes into the tent of Rachel.

And Rachel has taken the teraphim, and puts them in the furniture of the camel, and sits on them; and Laban feels all the tent, and has not found;

and she says to her father, “Let it not be displeasing in the eyes of my lord that I am not able to rise at your presence, for the way of women [is] on me”; and he searches, and has not found the teraphim.

And it is displeasing to Jacob, and he strives with Laban; and Jacob answers and says to Laban, “What [is] my transgression? What my sin, that you have burned after me?

For you have felt all my vessels: what have you found of all the vessels of your house? Set here before my brothers, and your brothers, and they decide between us both.

These twenty years I [am] with you: your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, and the rams of your flock I have not eaten;

the torn I have not brought to you—I repay it—from my hand you seek it; I have been deceived by day, and I have been deceived by night;

I have been [thus]: drought has consumed me in the day, and frost by night, and my sleep wanders from my eyes.

This [is] to me twenty years in your house: I have served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock; and you change my hire ten times;

unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac, had been for me, surely now you had sent me away empty; God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and reproves last night.”

Jacob’s Covenant with Laban

And Laban answers and says to Jacob, “The daughters [are] my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the flock my flock, and all that you are seeing [is] mine; and to my daughters—what do I to these today, or to their sons whom they have born?

And now, come, let us make a covenant, I and you, and it has been for a witness between me and you.”

And Jacob takes a stone, and lifts it up [for] a standing pillar;

and Jacob says to his brothers, “Gather stones,” and they take stones, and make a heap; and they eat there on the heap;

and Laban calls it Jegar-Sahadutha; and Jacob has called it Galeed.

And Laban says, “This heap [is] witness between me and you today”; therefore has he called its name Galeed;

Mizpah also, for he said, “YHWH watches between me and you, for we are hidden from one another;

if you afflict my daughters, or take wives beside my daughters—there is no man with us—see, God [is] witness between me and you.”

And Laban says to Jacob, “Behold, this heap, and behold, the standing pillar which I have cast between me and you;

this heap [is] witness, and the standing pillar [is] witness, that I do not pass over this heap to you, and that you do not pass over this heap and this standing pillar to me—for evil;

the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, judges between us—the God of their father,” and Jacob swears by the Fear of his father Isaac.

And Jacob sacrifices a sacrifice on the mountain, and calls to his brothers to eat bread, and they eat bread, and lodge on the mountain;

and Laban rises early in the morning, and kisses his sons and his daughters, and blesses them; and Laban goes on, and turns back to his place.

Jakob flieht vor Laban

Da kamen ihm die Reden der Söhne Labans zu Ohren, die da sagten: Jakob hat alles an sich gebracht, was unserm Vater gehörte, und von seinem Gute bereichert, ist er berühmt geworden;

Zudem sah Jakob, dass das Angesicht Labans gegen ihn nicht mehr so war wie sonst und ehedem,

darum nun, vorzüglich aber weil Gott zu ihm sprach: Kehre zurück in das Land deiner Väter und zu deinem Geschlechte, und ich will mit dir sein;

sandte er ihn, und ließ Rachel und Lia auf das Feld rufen, wo er die Herden weidete,

und sprach zu ihnen: Ich sehe, dass das Angesicht eures Vaters gegen mich nicht ist wie sonst und ehedem. Aber der Gott meines Vaters war mit mir.

Ihr wisset auch selbst, dass ich eurem Vater aus allen meinen Kräften gedient habe.

Aber euer Vater hat mich hintergangen und mir den Lohn zehnmal abgeändert, doch Gott ließ es nicht zu, dass er mir Schaden zufügte.

Wenn er sprach: Die Gesprenkelten sollen dein Lohn sein, so warfen alle Schafe gesprenkelte Junge. Sprach er dagegen: Alles, was weiß ist, sollst du zum Lohne haben, so warfen alle Herden weiße Junge.

So hat der Herr den Besitz eures Vaters genommen und ihn mir gegeben;

denn als die Zeit kam, wo die Schafe sich begatteten, erhob ich meine Augen und sah im Traume, dass die Böcke, welche die Schafe besprangen, gestreift und gesprenkelt und gefleckt waren.

Und der Engel Gottes sprach zu mir im Traume: Jakob! Und ich antwortete: Hier bin ich!

Er sprach: Erhebe deine Augen und siehe, alle Böcke, welche die Schafe bespringen, sind gestreift, gesprenkelt und gefleckt; denn ich habe alles gesehen, was Laban dir angetan hat.

Ich bin der Gott von Bethel, wo du den Stein gesalbt und mir ein Gelübde gemacht hast. So mache dich nun auf, ziehe aus diesem Lande, und kehre in das Land deiner Geburt zurück!

Da antworteten Rachel und Lia: Haben wir etwa noch Anteil und Erbe im Hause unsers Vaters?

Hat er uns nicht wie Fremde geachtet und uns verkauft, und den Preis, den er für uns erhielt, verzehrt?

Aber Gott hat den Reichtum unsers Vaters genommen und ihn uns und unseren Kindern gegeben; darum tue, was Gott dir befohlen hat.

Da machte sich Jakob auf, und setzte seine Kinder und Weiber auf Kamele, und zog fort.

Und er nahm all sein Eigentum, und seine Herden, und alles, was er in Mesopotamien erworben hatte, um sich zu Isaak, seinem Vater, in das Land Chanaan zu begeben.

Um jene Zeit war Laban hingegangen, seine Schafe zu scheren, und Rachel stahl die Götzen ihres Vaters.

Und Jakob wollte seinem Schwiegervater nicht kundtun, dass er fliehe.

Als er nun weggezogen war mit allem, was sein war, und den Fluß überschritten hatte, und nun gegen das Gebirge Galaad zog,

Laban verfolgt Jakob

ward dem Laban am dritten Tage berichtet, dass Jakob geflohen sei.

Da nahm er seine Brüder zu sich, und jagte ihm sieben Tage lang nach, und erreichte ihn auf dem Gebirge Galaad.

Doch er sah Gott im Traume, der zu ihm sprach: Hüte dich, gegen Jakob etwas Unfreundliches zu reden!

Schon hatte Jakob sein Zelt auf dem Gebirge aufgeschlagen, als jener ihn mit seinen Brüdern ereilte, und auf demselben Gebirge Galaad sein Zelt aufschlug.

Da sprach Laban zu Jakob: Warum hast du also getan, dass du meine Töchter ohne mein Wissen hinwegführtest, wie Kriegsgefangene?

Warum hast du, ohne es mir kund zu geben, fliehen wollen, und es mich nicht wissen lassen, dass ich dir mit Jauchzen und Liedern und Pauken und Lauten hätte das Geleite gegeben?

Du hast mich nicht meine Söhne und Töchter küssen lassen, töricht hast du gehandelt. Und nun könnte wohl

meine Hand mit dir schlimm verfahren, aber der Gott eures Vaters sprach gestern zu mir: Hüte dich, gegen Jakob etwas Hartes zu reden.

Doch sei es, du verlangtest zu den deinen zu kommen und sehntest dich nach dem Hause deines Vaters, warum hast du mir meine Götter gestohlen?

Jakob antwortete: Dass ich ohne dein Wissen aufgebrochen bin, geschah, weil ich fürchtete, du möchtest mir deine Töchter mit Gewalt wegnehmen.

Was aber den Diebstahl angeht, dessen du mich beschuldigst, so verliere der von unsern Brüdern das Leben, bei welchem du deine Götter findest. Suche nach, was du von dem Deinen bei mir findest, und nimm es. Dies sagte er, ohne zu wissen, dass Rachel die Götzen gestohlen hatte.

Da ging Laban in das Zelt Jakobs, und in das Lias, und in das Zelt der beiden Mägde, und fand nichts. Und als er in das Zelt Rachels trat,

verbarg diese eilig die Götzen unter einem Kamelsattel und setzte sich darauf. Da er nun das ganze Zelt durchsuchte und nichts fand,

sprach sie: Mein Herr zürne nicht, dass ich vor dir nicht aufstehen kann; denn es geht mir eben jetzt nach der Frauen Weise. So ward das Bemühen des Suchenden vereitelt.

Jakob aber ward zornig, und schalt Laban, und sprach: Was habe ich verschuldet, und was habe ich gefehlt, dass du mir so hitzig nachgejagt bist,

und all mein Hausgerät durchsucht hast? Was hast du gefunden von allen deinen Hausgeräten? Lege es hierher vor meine Brüder und deine Brüder, und sie mögen richten zwischen mir und dir.

Bin ich darum zwanzig Jahre bei dir gewesen? Deine Schafe und deine Ziegen waren nicht unfruchtbar, die Widder aus deiner Herde habe ich nicht gegessen;

wenn etwas von wilden Tieren geraubt war, habe ich es dir nicht angezeigt, ich selbst ersetzte allen Schaden; alles, was gestohlen wurde, fordertest du von mir;

Tag und Nacht verzehrte mich Hitze und Frost, und der Schlaf floh meine Augen.

So habe ich dir zwanzig Jahre hindurch in deinem Hause gedient, vierzehn Jahre um deine Töchter, und sechs um deine Herden; und zehnmal ändertest du mir meinen Lohn.

Wenn nicht der Gott meines Vaters Abraham und der, den Isaak fürchtet, mit mir gewesen wäre, du hättest mich wohl nun leer abziehen lassen; aber Gott hat mein Elend und die Arbeit meiner Hände angesehen und dich gestern gewarnt.

Labans Bund mit Jakob

Da antwortete ihm Laban: Mein sind die Töchter, und mein sind die Söhne, und deine Herden da, und alles, was du hier erblickst, ist mein. Was könnte ich meinen Kindern und Enkeln tun?

So komm denn und lass uns ein Bündnis schließen, dass es ein Zeugnis sei zwischen mir und dir.

Da nahm Jakob einen Stein, und richtete ihn als Denkstein auf,

und sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Bringet Steine herbei: Und sie sammelten Steine, und errichteten einen Hügel, und hielten auf demselben das Mahl.

Und Laban nannte ihn Hügel des Zeugen, Jakob aber Steinhaufen des Zeugnisses, jeder nach der besonderen Weise seiner Sprache.

Und Laban sprach: Dieser Hügel soll heut Zeuge sein zwischen mir und dir; darum ward sein Name Galaad genannt, das ist, der Hügel ist Zeuge.

Der Herr wache und richte über uns, wenn wir voneinander geschieden sind.

Wenn du meine Töchter hart behandelst und wenn du andere Weiber außer ihnen annimmst, so ist zwar kein Zeuge unserer Rede da, aber Gott ist gegenwärtig und sieht es.

Und wiederum sprach er zu Jakob: Siehe, dieser Hügel und der Stein, den ich zwischen mir und dir aufgerichtet habe,

sei Zeuge; dieser Hügel, sage ich, und dieser Stein sei zum Zeugnis, wenn ich über ihn hinausgehe gegen dich, oder du über ihn hinausgehst, mit der Absicht mir Böses zu tun.

Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Nachors sei Richter zwischen uns, der Gott ihres Vaters! Und Jakob schwur bei dem, welchen sein Vater Isaak fürchtete,

und brachte ein Opfer auf dem Berge dar, und rief seine Brüder zum Mahle; und sie aßen, und blieben daselbst.

Laban aber brach des Morgens früh auf, küsste seine Söhne und Töchter, und segnete sie, und kehrte an seinen Wohnsitz zurück.
