Haman's conspiracy against the Jews

After these things has King Ahasuerus exalted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and lifts him up, and sets his throne above all the heads who [are] with him,

and all servants of the king, who [are] in the gate of the king, are bowing and doing homage to Haman, for so the king has commanded for him; and Mordecai does not bow nor pay respect.

And the servants of the king, who [are] in the gate of the king, say to Mordecai, “Why [are] you transgressing the command of the king?”

And it comes to pass, in their speaking to him, day by day, and he has not listened to them, that they declare [it] to Haman, to see whether the words of Mordecai stand, for he has declared to them that he [is] a Jew.

And Haman sees that Mordecai is not bowing and doing homage to him, and Haman is full of fury,

and it is contemptible in his eyes to put forth a hand on Mordecai by himself, for they have declared to him the people of Mordecai, and Haman seeks to destroy all the Jews who [are] in all the kingdom of Ahasuerus—the people of Mordecai.

In the first month—it [is] the month of Nisan—in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, has one caused to fall Pur (that [is] the lot) before Haman, from day to day, and from month to month, [to] the twelfth, it [is] the month of Adar.

And Haman says to King Ahasuerus, “There is one people scattered and separated among the peoples, in all provinces of your kingdom, and their laws [are] diverse from all people, and the laws of the king they are not doing, and for the king it is not profitable to permit them;

if to the king [it be] good, let it be written to destroy them, and ten thousand talents of silver I weigh into the hands of those doing the work, to bring [it] into the treasuries of the king.”

And the king turns aside his signet from off his hand, and gives it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, adversary of the Jews;

and the king says to Haman, “The silver is given to you, and the people, to do with it as [it is] good in your eyes.”

And scribes of the king are called, on the first month, on the thirteenth day of it, and it is written according to all that Haman has commanded, to lieutenants of the king, and to the governors who [are] over province and province, and to the heads of people and people, province and province, according to its writing, and people and people according to its tongue, in the name of King Ahasuerus it has been written and sealed with the signet of the king,

and letters to be sent by the hand of the runners to all provinces of the king, to cut off, to slay, and to destroy all the Jews, from young even to old, infant and women, on one day, on the thirteenth of the twelfth month—it [is] the month of Adar—and to seize their spoil,

a copy of the writing to be made law in each and every province is revealed to all the peoples, to be ready for this day.

The runners have gone forth, hurried by the word of the king, and the law has been given in Shushan the palace, and the king and Haman have sat down to drink, and the city Shushan is perplexed.

Hamans Verschwörung gegen die Juden

Nach diesen Begebenheiten erhob der König Assuerus Aman, den Sohn Amadathis, der vom Geschlechte Agags war, und setzte dessen Sitz über den aller Fürsten, die um ihn waren.

Und alle Diener des Königs, welche innerhalb der Tore des Palastes waren, beugten die Knie und warfen sich vor Aman nieder; denn so hatte es ihnen der Herrscher geboten. Nur Mardochäus beugte das Knie nicht und warf sich nicht vor ihm nieder.

Da sprachen die Diener des Königs, welche über die Tore des Palastes gesetzt waren, zu ihm: Warum beobachtest du nicht, wie die übrigen, das Gebot des Königs?

Als sie dies öfter sagten, ohne dass er darauf hören wollte, zeigten sie es Aman an, begierig, zu erfahren, ob jener auf seinem Entschlusse beharren werde; denn er hatte ihnen gesagt, dass er ein Jude sei.

Als Aman dies hörte und selbst wahrnahm, dass Mardochäus das Knie nicht vor ihm beugte noch sich vor ihm niederwarf, ward er sehr zornig

und erachtete es für nichts, an Mardochäus allein seine Hand zu legen; denn er hatte gehört, dass er zu dem Volke der Juden gehörte, und so wollte er noch dazu das ganze Judenvolk im Reiche des Assuerus vertilgen.

Im ersten Monat (dessen Name Nisan ist), im zwölften Jahre der Herrschaft des Assuerus, warf man das Los, hebräisch Phur, vor Aman in die Urne, an welchem Tage und in welchem Monate das Judenvolk getötet werden sollte; da kam der zwölfte Monat heraus, welcher Adar heißt.

Und Aman sprach zum König Assuerus: Es ist ein Volk über alle Landschaften deines Reiches zerstreut, dass für sich abgesondert ist und neue Gesetze und Gebräuche hat, auch des Königs Verordnungen missachtet. Nun weißt du sehr wohl, dass es deinem Reiche nicht zuträglich ist, wenn jenes durch Nachsicht übermütig wird.

Gefällt es dir, so befiehl, dass es ausgetilgt werde, und ich will den Aufsehern deines Schatzes zehntausend Talente Silber darwägen.

Da zog der König den Ring, dessen er sich bediente, von seiner Hand und gab ihn Aman, dem Sohne Amadathis, vom Geschlechte Agags, dem Feinde der Juden,

und sprach zu ihm: Das Silber, das du versprichst, soll dein sein. Mit dem Volke tue, was dir gut dünkt.

Dann wurden die Schreiber des Königs im ersten Monate Nisan, am dreizehnten Tage dieses Monats, berufen und es wurden, wie Aman befahl, im Namen des Königs Assuerus an alle Statthalter des Königs und die Richter der Landschaften und der verschiedenen Völker Schreiben erlassen nach der Verschiedenheit der Sprachen, so dass es jedes Volk lesen und verstehen konnte, und die Schreiben wurden mit seinem Ringe gesiegelt

und durch die Läufer des Königs in alle Länder gesandt, dass man alle Juden vom Knaben bis zum Greise, bis zu den Kindern und Frauen, an einem Tage, das ist am dreizehnten des zwölften Monats, welcher Adar heißt, töten und vernichten und ihre Güter plündern solle.

Dies aber war der Inhalt der Schreiben, dass alle Landschaften es wissen und sich bereit halten sollten auf den angegebenen Tag.

Und die Eilboten, welche abgesandt wurden, eilten hin, des Königs Befehl zu erfüllen. Alsbald ward auch in Susan der Erlass angeschlagen, während der König und Aman ein Gastmahl feierten, aber alle Juden, welche in der Stadt waren, weinten.
