- Kapitel 6 -

The futility of life

There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it [is] great on man:

A man to whom God gives wealth, and riches, and honor, and there is no lack to his soul of all that he desires, and God does not give him power to eat of it, but a stranger eats it; this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease.

If a man begets one hundred, and lives many years, and is great, because they are the days of his years, and his soul is not satisfied from the goodness, and also he has not had a grave, I have said, “Better than he [is] the untimely birth.”

For in vanity he came in, and in darkness he goes, and in darkness his name is covered,

even the sun he has not seen nor known, more rest has this than that.

And though he had lived one thousand years twice over, yet he has not seen good; does not everyone go to the same place?

All the labor of man [is] for his mouth, || And yet the soul is not filled.

For what advantage [is] to the wise above the fool? What to the poor who knows to walk before the living?

Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the going of the soul. This [is] also vanity and distress of spirit.

What [is] that which has been? Already is its name called, and it is known that it [is] man, || And he is not able to contend with him who is stronger than he.

For there are many things multiplying vanity; What advantage [is] to man?

For who knows what [is] good for a man in life, the number of the days of the life of his vanity, and he makes them as a shadow? For who declares to man what is after him under the sun?

Die Vergeblichkeit des Lebens

Noch ein anderes Übel gibt es, das ich unter der Sonne sah und das häufig ist bei den Menschen.

Da ist ein Mann, den Gott Reichtum und Habe und Ehre verlieh, so dass seiner Seele nichts fehlt an allem, was sie wünscht; aber Gott hat ihm nicht gestattet, davon den Genuss zu haben, sondern ein Fremder verschlingt es. Das ist Eitelkeit und großer Jammer!

Wenn jemand auch hundert Kinder zeugte und viele Jahre lebte und ein hohes Alter erreichte, seine Seele aber sein Hab und Gut nicht genießen könnte und ihm nicht einmal ein Begräbnis zuteil würde, von diesem sage ich, dass eine unzeitige Geburt glücklicher ist denn er.

Denn für nichts kam sie auf die Welt und fährt zur Finsternis hin und Vergessenheit tilgt ihren Namen.

Jene sah das Sonnenlicht nicht und lernte den Unterschied zwischen Gut und Böse nicht kennen.

Auch wenn er zweitausend Jahre lebte und Gutes nicht genösse, eilt nicht alles an einen Ort hin?

Alle Arbeit des Menschen wird für seinen Mund vollbracht, aber seine Seele hat nie ein Genügen.

Was hat der Weise vor dem Toren voraus? Und was der Arme als dass er dahin wandelt, wo das Leben ist?

Besser ist es zu sehen, was man wünscht, als zu wünschen, was man nicht kennt; aber auch dies ist Eitelkeit und Vermessenheit des Geistes.

Wer immer kommen wird, ist schon mit seinem Namen genannt; man weiß, dass er ein Mensch ist und nicht gegen einen Stärkeren, als er ist, rechten kann.

In vielen Worten ist viel Eitelkeit, wenn man darüber streitet.
