- Kapitel 25 -

(2 Kings 14:1–7)

Amaziah [was] a son of twenty-five years [when] he has reigned, and he has reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother [is] Jehoaddan of Jerusalem,

and he does that which is right in the eyes of YHWH—only, not with a perfect heart.

And it comes to pass, when the kingdom has been strong on him, that he slays his servants, those striking his father the king,

and he has not put their sons to death, but [did] as is written in the Law, in the Scroll of Moses, whom YHWH commanded, saying, “Fathers do not die for sons, and sons do not die for fathers, but they each die for his own sin.”

Amaziah’s Victories

And Amaziah gathers Judah and appoints them according to the house of the fathers, for heads of the thousands and for heads of the hundreds, for all Judah and Benjamin; and he inspects them from a son of twenty years and upward, and finds them [to be] three hundred thousand chosen ones, going forth to the host, holding spear and buckler.

And he hires out of Israel one hundred thousand mighty men of valor, with one hundred talents of silver;

and a man of God has come to him, saying, “O king, the host of Israel does not go with you; for YHWH is not with Israel—all the sons of Ephraim;

but if you are going, do [it], be strong for battle, God causes you to stumble before an enemy, for there is power in God to help, and to cause to stumble.”

And Amaziah says to the man of God, “But what to do about the hundred talents that I have given to the troop of Israel?” And the man of God says, “YHWH has more to give to you than this.”

And Amaziah separates them, of the troop that has come to him from Ephraim, to go to their own place; and their anger burns mightily against Judah, and they return to their place in the heat of anger.

And Amaziah has strengthened himself, and leads his people, and goes to the Valley of Salt, and strikes ten thousand of the sons of Seir.

And the sons of Judah have taken captive ten thousand alive, and they bring them to the top of the rock, and cast them from the top of the rock, and all of them have been broken.

And the sons of the troop that Amaziah has sent back from going with him to battle—they rush against cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth-Horon, and strike three thousand of them, and seize much prey.

Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry

And it comes to pass after the coming in of Amaziah from striking the Edomites, that he brings in the gods of the sons of Seir, and establishes them for gods for himself, and bows himself before them, and he makes incense to them.

And the anger of YHWH burns against Amaziah, and He sends a prophet to him, and he says to him, “Why have you sought the gods of the people that have not delivered their people out of your hand?”

And it comes to pass, in his speaking to him, that he says to him, “Have we appointed you for a counselor to the king? For you [must] cease; why do they strike you?” And the prophet ceases and says, “I have known that God has counseled to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

Jehoash Defeats Amaziah

(2 Kings 14:8–14)

And Amaziah king of Judah takes counsel, and sends to Joash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying,

“Come, we look one another in the face.” And Joash king of Israel sends to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thorn that [is] in Lebanon has sent to the cedar that [is] in Lebanon, saying, Give your daughter to my son for a wife; and a beast of the field that [is] in Lebanon passes by and treads down the thorn.

You have said, Behold, I have struck Edom; and your heart has lifted you up to boast; now, abide in your house, why do you stir yourself up in evil, that you have fallen, you and Judah with you?”

And Amaziah has not listened, for it [is] from God in order to give them into [their] hand, because they have sought the gods of Edom;

and Joash king of Israel goes up, and they look one another in the face, he and Amaziah king of Judah, in Beth-Shemesh, that [is] Judah’s,

and Judah is struck before Israel, and they flee—each to his tents.

And Joash king of Israel has caught Amaziah king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, in Beth-Shemesh, and brings him to Jerusalem, and breaks down in the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate—four hundred cubits,

and [takes] all the gold, and the silver, and all the vessels that are found in the house of God with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the house of the king, and the sons of the pledges, and turns back to Samaria.

The Death of Amaziah

(2 Kings 14:17–20)

And Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lives after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years;

and the rest of the matters of Amaziah, the first and the last, behold, are they not written on the scrolls of the kings of Judah and Israel?

And from the time that Amaziah has turned aside from after YHWH—they make a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he flees to Lachish, and they send after him to Lachish, and put him to death there,

and lift him up on the horses, and bury him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

Amazja regiert in Juda

(2. Könige 14,1-7)

Fünfundzwanzig Jahre war Amasias alt, als er König ward, und neunundzwanzig Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem; seine Mutter hieß Joaden aus Jerusalem.

Er tat, was in den Augen des Herrn gut war, aber nicht mit ungeteiltem Herzen.

Als er nun seine Herrschaft gesichert sah, ließ er die Diener, welche den König, seinen Vater, ermordet hatten, töten;

ihre Söhne aber tötete er nicht, wie im Buche des Gesetzes Moses geschrieben steht, in dem der Herr geboten und gesagt hat: Die Väter sollen nicht um der Söhne willen getötet werden, noch die Söhne um der Väter willen, sondern ein jeder soll für seine eigene Sünde sterben.

Der Krieg gegen Edom

Da ließ Amasias Juda sich versammeln und ordnete sie nach Geschlechtern, nach Obersten und Hauptleuten in ganz Juda und Benjamin; sodann musterte er die von zwanzig Jahren und darüber Zählenden und fand dreimalhunderttausend junge Männer, die in den Kampf ziehen und Speer und Schild führen konnten.

Dazu dingte er um Sold von Israel hunderttausend tapfere Männer für hundert Talente Silbers.

Es kam aber ein Mann Gottes zu ihm und sprach: O König! lass das Heer von Israel nicht mit dir ziehen; denn der Herr ist nicht mit Israel und allen Söhnen Ephraims.

Wenn du aber meinst, auf der Heeresmacht beruhe der Ausgang des Krieges, so wird Gott dich von den Feinden überwinden lassen; denn Gott gehört es zu, zu helfen und die Flucht ergreifen zu lassen.

Da sprach Amasias zu dem Manne Gottes: Was wird denn dann aus den hundert Talenten werden, die ich den Soldaten Israels gegeben habe? Der Mann Gottes antwortete ihm: Der Herr ist reich, dass er dir viel mehr zu geben vermag als dies.

Amasias also sonderte das Heer, das aus Ephraim zu ihm gekommen war, ab, dass es in seine Heimat zurückkehre; sie aber kehrten mit heftigem Groll wider Juda in ihr Land zurück.

Amasias führte indes sein Volk mutig aus, zog in das Salztal und schlug von den Söhnen Seirs zehntausend.

Und weitere zehntausend Mann nahmen die Söhne Judas gefangen, führten sie auf die Spitze des Felsens und stürzten sie von oben herab in die Tiefe, dass sie alle zerschmettert wurden.

Jenes Heer aber, welches Amasias zurückgeschickt hatte, dass es nicht mit ihm in den Kampf ziehen sollte, zerstreute sich über die Städte Judas von Samaria bis Bethoron, erschlug dreitausend und raubte viele Beute.

Als nun Amasias die Edomiter geschlagen hatte, brachte er die Götter der Söhne Seirs mit sich, stellte sie für sich als Götter auf und fiel vor ihnen nieder und zündete ihnen Räucherwerk an.

Darum zürnte der Herr über Amasias und sandte einen Propheten zu ihm, der ihm sagen sollte: Warum hast du Götter angebetet, die ihr eigenes Volk nicht aus deiner Hand gerettet haben?

Da er so zu ihm sprach, antwortete ihm jener: Bist du des Königs Ratgeber? Schweige, dass ich dich nicht töte! Der Prophet sprach hinweg gehend: Nun weiß ich, dass Gott beschlossen hat, dich zu töten, weil du diese böse Tat begangen und überdies auf meinen Rat nicht gehört hast.

Israel besiegt Juda

(2. Könige 14,8-14)

Amasias also, der König von Juda, fasste einen schlimmen Plan, er sandte zu Joas, dem Sohne des Joachaz, des Sohnes Jehus, dem Könige von Israel, und ließ ihm sagen: Komm, wir wollen einander entgegentreten.

Dieser aber sandte die Boten zurück und ließ ihm sagen: Die Distel auf dem Libanon sandte zu der Zeder des Libanon und sprach: Gib meinem Sohne deine Tochter zum Weibe; siehe, da gingen die wilden Tiere, die im Walde des Libanon waren, über die Distel hin und zertraten sie.

Du sagst: Ich habe Edom geschlagen, und darum erhebt sich dein Herz in Stolz; aber bleibe zu Hause! Warum willst du das Unglück wider dich herausfordern, dass du zu Fall kommst und Juda mit dir?

Aber Amasias wollte nicht hören, denn es war des Herrn Wille, dass er wegen der Götter Edoms in die Hände der Feinde überliefert werde.

Da zog Joas, der König von Israel, herauf und sie traten einander entgegen; Amasias aber, der König von Juda, war in Bethsames Juda.

Und Juda ward von Israel geschlagen und floh, ein jeder in seine Hütte.

Amasias aber, den König von Juda, den Sohn Joas, des Sohnes Joachaz, nahm Joas, der König von Israel, zu Bethsames gefangen und führte ihn nach Jerusalem; alsdann zerstörte er die Mauer der Stadt vom Tore Ephraim bis an das Ecktor, vierhundert Ellen weit.

Auch nahm er alles Gold und Silber und alles Geräte, die er im Hause Gottes und bei Obededom und in den Schätzen des Königshauses fand; dazu führte er auch die Söhne der Geiseln mit sich nach Samaria.

Tod von Amazja

(2. Könige 14,17-20)

Amasias aber, der Sohn des Joas, der König von Juda, lebte, nachdem Joas, der Sohn des Joachaz, der König von Israel, gestorben war, noch fünfzehn Jahre.

Die übrige Geschichte Amasias aber, die frühere wie die spätere, ist im Buche der Könige von Juda und Israel aufgeschrieben.

Nachdem er aber den Herrn verlassen, wurden ihm Nachstellungen zu Jerusalem bereitet. Und als er nach Lachis floh, sandten sie dorthin und töteten ihn daselbst.

Alsdann brachten sie ihn auf Pferden zurück und begruben ihn bei seinen Vätern in der Davidsstadt.
