- Kapitel 21 -

(2 Kings 8:16–19)

And Jehoshaphat lies with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the City of David, and his son Jehoram reigns in his stead.

And he has brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah; all these [are] sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel,

and their father gives to them many gifts of silver and of gold, and of precious things, with fortified cities in Judah, and he has given the kingdom to Jehoram, for he [is] the firstborn.

And Jehoram rises up over the kingdom of his father, and strengthens himself, and slays all his brothers with the sword, and also of the heads of Israel.

Jehoram [is] a son of thirty-two years in his reigning, and he has reigned eight years in Jerusalem,

and he walks in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab did, for a daughter of Ahab has been to him for a wife, and he does evil in the eyes of YHWH,

and YHWH has not been willing to destroy the house of David, for the sake of the covenant that He made with David, and as He had said to give a lamp to him and to his sons [for] all the days.

Edom and Libnah Rebel

(2 Kings 8:20–24)

In his days Edom has revolted from under the hand of Judah, and they cause a king to reign over them;

and Jehoram passes over with his heads, and all the chariots with him, and it comes to pass, he has risen by night and strikes the Edomites who are coming around against him, and the princes of the chariots,

and Edom revolts from under the hand of Judah to this day; then Libnah revolts at that time from under his hand, because he has forsaken YHWH, God of his fathers;

also, he has made high places on the mountains of Judah, and causes the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit whoredom, and compels Judah.

Elijah’s Letter to Jehoram

And a writing from Elijah the prophet comes to him, saying, “Thus said YHWH, God of your father David: Because that you have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat, and in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

and you walk in the way of the kings of Israel, and cause Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit whoredom like the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also your brothers, the house of your father, who are better than yourself, you have slain;

behold, YHWH is striking [with] a great striking among your people, and among your sons, and among your wives, and among all your goods—

and you, with many sicknesses, with disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out by the sickness, day by day.”

Jehoram’s Disease and Death

And YHWH wakes up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabians, who [are] beside the Cushim,

and they come up into Judah, and break into it, and take captive all the substance that is found at the house of the king, and also his sons, and his wives, and there has not been left to him a son except Jehoahaz the youngest of his sons.

And after all this YHWH has plagued him in his bowels by a disease for which there is no healing,

and it comes to pass, from days to days, and at the time of the going out of the end of two years, his bowels have gone out with his sickness, and he dies of severe diseases, and his people have not made for him a burning like the burning of his fathers.

He was a son of thirty-two [years] in his reigning, and he has reigned eight years in Jerusalem, and he goes without desire, and they bury him in the City of David, and not in the graves of the kings.

Jehoram regiert in Juda

(2. Könige 8,16-19)

Josaphat aber entschlief zu seinen Vätern und ward bei ihnen in der Davidsstadt begraben, sein Sohn Joram ward König an seiner Statt.

Dieser hatte zu Brüdern die Söhne Josaphats: Azarias, Jahiel, Zacharias, Azarias, Michael und Saphatias; diese alle waren Söhne Josaphats, des Königs von Juda.

Ihr Vater gab ihnen viele Geschenke an Silber und Gold und Kostbarkeiten, samt befestigten Städten in Juda, aber die Herrschaft übergab er Joram, weil dieser der Erstgeborene war.

Joram also gelangte zur Nachfolge im Reiche seines Vaters, und nachdem er sich befestigt, tötete er alle seine Brüder und einige von den Fürsten Israels mit dem Schwerte.

Zweiunddreißig Jahre war Joram alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und acht Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem.

Er wandelte auf den Wegen der Könige von Israel, wie das Haus Achab getan hatte, denn die Tochter Achabs war sein Weib, und er tat, was vor dem Angesichte des Herrn böse war.

Der Herr aber wollte das Haus Davids nicht vernichten, um des Bundes willen, den er mit diesem geschlossen, und weil er verheißen hatte, ihm und seinen Söhnen allezeit eine Leuchte verleihen zu wollen.

(2. Könige 8,20-24)

In jener Zeit lehnt sich Edom auf, um Juda nicht unterworfen zu sein, und setzte einen eigenen König über sich.

Da zog Joram hinüber mit seinen Befehlshabern und der ganzen Reiterei, die um ihn war, und machte sich des Nachts auf und schlug die Edomiter, welche ihn und alle Befehlshaber seiner Reiterei umringt hatten.

Gleichwohl fiel Edom von der Herrschaft Judas ab, bis auf diesen Tag. Zu jener Zeit fiel auch Lobna ab, um nicht unter seiner Gewalt zu stehen; denn er hatte den Herrn, den Gott seiner Väter, verlasen.

Überdies baute er auch Höhen in den Städten von Juda und brachte die Bewohner von Jerusalem zur Buhlerei und verführte Juda.

Da ward ihm ein Schreiben von dem Propheten Elias gebracht, in dem es hieß: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Davids, deines Vaters: Weil du nicht auf den Wegen Josaphats, deines Vaters, und auf den Wegen Asas, des Königs von Juda, gewandelt bist,

sondern den Weg der Könige von Israel betreten und Juda und die Einwohner von Jerusalem zur Buhlerei verführt hast, indem du die Buhlerei des Hauses Achab nachahmtest, überdies auch deine Brüder, das Haus deines Vaters, die besser waren als du, ermordest hast,

siehe, so wird der Herr dich, samt deinem Volke und deinen Söhnen und Frauen und deiner ganzen Habe, mit einer großen Plage heimsuchen;

du selbst aber wirst in eine schlimme Krankheit deines Unterleibes fallen, bis deine Eingeweide allmählich von Tag zu Tag abgehen.

So erweckte denn der Herr wider Joram den Geist der Philister und der Araber, welche an die Äthiopier angrenzen.

Diese zogen gegen das Land Juda und verwüsteten es und raubten alle Habe, die sich im Hause des Königs fand, überdies auch seine Söhne und Frauen; und es blieb ihm kein Sohn übrig außer Joachaz, welcher der Jüngste war.

Zu dem allem schlug ihn der Herr mit einer unheilbaren Krankheit des Unterleibes.

Da nun ein Tag nach dem andern verging und die Zeiträume umliefen, wurde der Kreislauf zweier Jahre erfüllt, und er ward von langwieriger Krankheit derart heimgesucht, dass selbst seine Eingeweide von ihm gingen und die Krankheit ihn nur zugleich mit dem Leben verließ. So starb er an einer sehr bösen Krankheit und das Volk hielt ihm nicht nach Herkommen, wie es seinen Vorfahren getan hatte, ein Leichenbegräbnis durch Verbrennen.

Zweiunddreißig Jahre war er alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und acht Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem. Er wandelte nicht recht und man begrub ihn in der Davidsstadt, aber nicht in der Grabstätte der Könige.
